5 Actors That Could Take On The Mantle of the Batman

5 Actors That Could Take On The Mantle of the Batman

With all the rumors and talk of Ben Affleck looking for a "graceful exit" from the DCEU, who stands to put on the cape and cowl next?

If Batfleck decides to boogie on out of the DCEU, then it will need a worthy successor. At this point, I think that it is highly unlikely that they cast young, to keep a smooth transition into an actor about the same age as our current Batman. WB has a huge decision to make, so who's it gonna be?

5. Eric Bana

We know Bana can play angry in Hulk, and there has been enough time between that film and now to where he could be due for a fresh start. Affleck played Daredevil, so why can’t Bana make the same Marvel to DC conversion?

4. Armie Hammer

As much as he was rumored to play Green Lantern in Justice League, Hammer was nowhere to be found. After being cast in Justice League: Mortal and then production shutting down, Hammer’s name has always been tossed in the ring as a worthy candidate. Physically he fits in perfect, I’m just unsure of the acting range. The report will Cavill would definitely be one of the pros to this casting and his upcoming role in Call Me By Your Name should boost his popularity going into next year. Personally, I think he would be a better fit for Hal Jordan.

3. Josh Duhamel

He has the size and the looks, but does he have the acting chops? WB has shown that they are not afraid to cast TV actors (Zachary Levi as Shazam). Duhamel would need to prove he can go into a darker character role, but I think he could pull it off. This is my sleeper pick if the studios decide to go away from the Hollywood A-List.

2. Jake Gyllenhaal

I put him high on this list only because the rumors about him taking over are overwhelming at this point. Personally, I think he would make a great Bruce Wayne, but may not be able to pull the cowl off. He would definitely have to change his voice up a bit, and make sure the cowl covers up that lip mole. One thing is for sure though, seeing him in Southpaw leaves no room for concern about him getting shredded for the role. He also checks the box of Hollywood A-Lister, which WB may be targeting like they did with Affleck.

1. Jon Hamm

Here he is, essentially the unanimous fan choice to take over as Batman. He has the look, he has the age, and he has the attitude. He showed he can put on the fake smile act and go to some pretty dark places as Dom Draper. The only thing holding him back is the superhero films don’t seem to be his cup of tea. He has mentioned many times that he’s just not that interested, but maybe the right story pitch by Reeves can bring him into the fold and stay there for the upcoming future of the DCEU.

Only Eric Bana is someone that would be interesting to see a Batman. Hammer is too tall, Gyllenhaal is not a "Batman" type, Josh Duhamel cannot carry a character and film on the order of Batman, and Jon Hamm would not bring the intensity I think the role requires.

Bring back Bale!

@Forthas - Bale isn't coming back, and that's a good thing. Also, Bana is older than Affleck, so no.

@Philip - Bale should come back because he is the ONLY Batman to have:

1) Had subsequent film make more money than the previous;
2) Completed a trilogy of films as Batman;
3) Posted back to back billion dollar films;
4) Led the highest grossing movies for a solo superhero film franchise;
5) Starred in arguably the greatest CBM of all time; and
6) Achieved a higher level of critical success than any other superhero solo film franchise.

No other actor who has been Batman has come close to any of these achievements. In addition a poll taken earlier this year shows that Bale is by far the most popular Batman ever.

@Forthas - And yes. And for the reasons mentioned above, his Batman should remain separate for everything that is to come. Don't ruin his legacy.

@Philip - I completely understand that opinion. But the fact you think the Legacy would be ruined shows that you do not have faith in future films. I think in order to be "great" you must take risks. The Star Wars franchise was slowed down by the prequels...but I don't look at the first three films any less than what I did before the prequels. They are still classics. Is Iron Man ruined by Thor: The Dark World? I think they need to take the time to plan out what they want to do. But I can tell you that I have seen a version of what the DCEU could have been if they had followed Nolan universe and it could be absolutely EPIC.

@Forthas - I do have faith in future films. But I don't see how Bale's Batman going well with what I hope to see in the future. Simple as that.

@Philip - he’s 5 years older. In Hollywood, that’s the same thing

Hammer is better suited for other characters, Gyllenhaal is good but I don't see Batman, Bana and Hamm are older than Affleck and Duhamel is as old as Affleck, and not someone to build a new Batman around.

If they're going smaller star, perhaps a TV name, there's only one choice.....Justin Hartley.

@Philip - Hartley has already been Green Arrow for years on Smallville and then a failed attempt at Aquaman. Don't think he is going to get a 3rd shot as a DC hero.

@Knightfall54 - He was Aquaman in that failed pilot before being Green Arrow, and they liked him enough to make him the Green Arrow instead. Today, he's a lead in one of the best shows on TV.

1.) Jon Hamm - Too old and has expressed disinterest in superhero movies.

2.) Jake Gyllenhaal - He's a strong candidate, I'm 50/50 on him.

3.) Josh Duhamel - Too old.

4.) Armie Hammer - Too young and not a great actor.

5.) Eric Bana - Far, far too old.

Imo, the best potential candidates to play the DCEU Batman if Affleck walks are;

- Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Age 36 (Might be confusing with TDK Trilogy, but could work)
- Jake Gyllenhaal - Age 37
- Luke Evans - Age 38
- Lee Pace - Age 38
- Edgar Ramirez - Age 40
- Collin Farrell - Age 41
- Joel Edgerton - Age 43
- Karl Urban - Age 45

They need a Batman aged between 35-45 for this film universe.

@TheGoddamnPeel - Armie Hammer is currently getting showered with praise for his role in Call Me by Your Name, and was good in the Social Network, a highlight together with Cavill in Man from U.N.C.L.E and has been good in pretty much everything following Lone Ranger. But yeah, he sucks.

Lee Pace is actually a really interesting choice. Kudos.

Strong NO to Edgerton, Farrell (honestly he'd look like the lovechild of Alfred and Martha) and Ramirez though.

Knightfall54 - 11/29/2017, 3:12 PM
@TheGoddamnPeel -Duhamel is the same age as Karl Urban and Hamm is 46. I guess that extra year counts Hamm out? And suggesting Joseph Gordon Levitt? Cmon man get real.
Peel
Peel - 11/29/2017, 3:19 PM
@Philip - Armie Hammer is your typical white-privileged Hollywood actor who plays the same role over and over again in every movie, a bit like Jennifer Lawrence. I don't really consider him a great actor but each to their own.

I've considered Lee Pace for ages, most of all for how tall he is which, underneath the same Batsuit, would make him look near 100% identical to Affleck.

Fair enough to the rest, but Farrell is a really diverse and underrated actor, and think he could do it if it was offered to him.
Peel
Peel - 11/29/2017, 3:22 PM
@Knightfall54 - Fair enough Duhamel is the same age as Urban, I just don't see him as Batman personally and haven't heard him from anything recently. Hamm is 46 and for me that extra year counts, I'm shaky enough as it is with Affleck cast as Batman given how old he is.

And why not suggest JGL, The Dark Knight Rises was over five years ago, people will have moved on from that trilogy by now.
Philip
Philip - 11/29/2017, 3:38 PM
@TheGoddamnPeel - Funny, while I do agree with you about JLaw - especially when it comes to all those David O. Russell films - I disagree fully about Hammer. I've never seen him play two roles that are even remotely similar.

If you wan't identical to Affleck, Justin Hartley is your guy. They have more or less the exact same chin.

I like Farrell, but I don't see him as Batman. Constantine - which was rumored - would be cool though.

I think Hamm and Bana are fantastic options. I really don’t know which one I like better. The other 2, while Gyllenhaal is phenomenal, are too young and this isn’t a reboot. Also Hamm and Bana have the height and can lead a movie
