After TDKR: What I'd like to see

What I want to see for Batman in the cinemas after The Nolan trilogy has come to a close.

As many of you already know, The Dark Knight Rises will be the final installment of the Christopher Nolan directed Batman trilogy. It's also pretty obvious that the Batman film franchise is a cash cow, and WB will definitely bring a new version of Batman to the big screen after Nolan, Bale and the rest of the team depart. So what's next for the Dark Knight? Here's what I think we need in the next series of adventures for our caped crusader.

1. New costume: Batman has worn 3 different styled suits over his movie career. The first was a cheesy cloth/spandex looking thing in the 60s, and that worked fine for the time. Then we got the 80s and 90s rubber suits that got progressively worse as they evolved, and they mostly sucked (Bat-nipples, cod piece, bat-butt). In the more recent years, Batman has worn the Kevlar suit we have grown used to. The Kevlar works well for the feel and tone of the current movies, but we need something to truly set the new Batman apart. I suggest a milliskin costume like the one in Batman: Arkham City, but with one noticeable difference: the cape. Batman's cape should cover his whole front side - like a cloak. Let Batman shroud himself in it and lurk in the shadows, moving quickly like a ninja. He should be seen in quick spurts except for the final confrontation and when the costume is being introduced. Keep the audience on their toes.

2. The voice: Bruce Wayne should have a normal voice, but Batman needs a deep, authoritative voice. We need to ditch the growl that Bale seems so fond of. Batman needs to be just as discernible as he is frightening. When he's hunting for clues or interrogating criminals, the last thing we need is a Batman we can't understand. Remember, Batman is supposed to be brilliant, not just frightening.

3. Puzzles: We need Batman to SOLVE crimes. He's the Sherlock Holmes of our time. He needs to investigate and solve crimes, putting together the pieces of the puzzle in order to discover the culprit.

4. The villain: I'd love to see the Riddler again, but NOT a funny version. Let the Joker be funny. The Riddler should be mysterious and his clues should be tough to figure out. I don't want to figure out a puzzle before Batman. He's the detective, and the Riddler would be a great match for his mind. But what about his physical strength? We need a villain that can match Batman in the physical arena too. We know that Bane can do this, but Nolan has already used Bane, and we need someone else. I propose Clayface. He can start out as a psycho, and as the film goes, he can slowly become the more supernatural version of the villain that appears in the comics. We can have the Riddler be an unseen villain, while Clayface is going around killing people, and Batman has to solve the crimes in a certain amount of time or something.

5. Realism: This movie DOES NOT have to be planted in realism. Let a little fantasy creep in. Let the villains have powers. We got a realistic Batman in the Nolan films so let's try something new. I don't want some stupid neon joke like the two we got in the 90s, but maybe some kind of subtle fantasy that we can buy into. This would also open the doors for other characters like Superman, Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman to appear in small doses in subsequent films (if the director chooses to go that route).

That's my list of 5 things the next Batman movie series needs. It's just a personal opinion, and I realize that some folks may disagree, so sound off below! :)

I say leave the franchise alone and do other DC superheroes. People will catch on after Nolan and be like.... "Another Batman? -_-" Man of Steel will hopefully be a great start for a new franchise, Green Lantern needs to learn from their mistakes (WB) and hopefully other characters can come to life!

Nice article.

I agree with virtually everything you said, especially the fantasy. I'm so not a fan of 'Sorethroatman' in Nolanverse.

However I wonder how well the general public will accept a comicbook fantasy based Batman after Nolan's films.

I think a fourth film should be set a few years after The Dark Knight Rises, so it could be a bit of a loose sequel. They said they want to "reinvent" Batman, not reboot him. They could keep the same basic continuity and change what they need to to suit a slightly more fantastical tone.
Basically, they don't need to beat us over the head that it's part of Nolan's series, but they don't have to do the same to say it isn't. If fans want to think it is or isn't, they can, it's left up to them.
And please bring in Robin, but do him right. He can be a great character when you don't make him suck.

@Viltrumite: Are you saying you'd like to see a Batman film follow up TDKR the way that The Incredible Hulk followed up Hulk? I'd say that doing something like that or by making more movies in the Nolan-verse would be a great disservice to Batman. We'd end up seeing Batman treated the way Superman has been treated. It seems that for a long time, people thought Supes couldn't exist apart from Donner, and now people will begin to think Batty can't exist without Nolan. I say start over.

@dmm5: You and I both know that more Batman movies are sure to come. I'd love to see other characters with feature films. Wonder Woman and the Flash are in serious need of some movie love, but if we're being realistic, we have to see that Batman will definitely get another movie after TDKR, and at some point, we'll have to leave the Nolan-verse for good.

Look at my Batman Fancast. Also, read the teaser thingy uptop. R Rated, horrifying Batman please...

If Law And Order: SVU is more puzzling, creepy and scarier than a Batman movie... tsk tsk tsk. (Love SVU)

I like the growl in Batman Begins but TDK was a bit too much!

To be honest I want Gotham, Batman, and the police gritty and realistice. But, I want the villains from the comics, but make them darker, and less happy.

*We all remember the Jim Carry/Riddler incident*

next movie should take place in the same universe/story line as Nolan's films but many many years later. Add more fantasy elements (without deelving into non sense tho) and do villains that haven't been done in live action before.Harleyquinn and clayface would be perfect.

They should make other DC character movies and lay off Batman for a good 6-10 years.

no more batman for at least five years, batman & superman are not the only dc characters that are worthy of movies.

@supyrman- The Incredible Hulk didn't follow Hulk and not entirely true about more Bat movies. Man of Steel can be a huge hit (highly unlikely) and be a new fresh franchise. WB will only use those two characters and I rather see Superman get rebooted than Batman for the third time when Nolan's was a masterpiece. It worked for the Bat the second time, hope it works for Supes

I think that after 3 Bat movies supposedly ultra-realistic and grounded, I do actually think that a bit of the fantasy / mystical side should be allowed back into the franchise. Not over the top and campy/comical, perhaps just the leap-of-faith stuff like Killer Croc and the Lazarus Pits etc... After all, if we can have great, serious movies about Mutants, Gods and Super Soldiers, why not throw a little of the fantasy back into the mix with Batman?

yeah lets second guess the most profitable version of a comic book character ever.
For the sake of other DC properties, that are high risk.
( Sup returns and green Lantern )
Lets also go toward fantasy and risk alienating the non comic book fans the movie attracts.
All this so we can make batman even a higher risk after losing bale and Nolan.

I would call you nuts, but meh WB has done stupider things.

I think it's time to give Batman a rest for a generation or so. There are other DC properties that can be explored.

I just don't see why Nolan won't direct a few more Batman movies. I don't really get it. It doesn't make sense to reboot an excellent franchise so soon after it ends.

like bale said...if nolan comes back for a 4th..so will he. but if not i say leave it alone for a while and let other DC heroes get shine!! clearly nolan had the best batman story out of all the ones we seen. but IF nolan did come back for a 4th film...Bring in Killer Croc n the Riddler..i honestly wanted robin williams to play dr. strange in TDKR but thats not happening but he should be in the 4th also

heres my problem though..if you are going to make a batman movie DON'T do the SAME characters Over..we seen the Joker Twice...Freeze 1..Posion ivy 1..Bane twice now...The Riddler 1...Two face Twice...Peguin 1..Catwoman twice...Ra's 1 (batman begins n TDKR..2 if u wanna be a dick about it)...Scarecrow 1.
yes though may be the best bad guys but we seen enough of them already. What they should of done was bring in Harley Quin in TDK but thats just me...but we seen those characters already! i wouldnt/don't want to see the same ones over if they remade it
spice it up...give us Killer Croc...ClayFace..Dr. Strange...blackmask...red hood...deadshot..fire fly...Ventriloquist

If they decide to make a new one....they should NOT do a batman beyond..idk sounds dumb. but it is a new generation people can't be watching the same batman with the same cape forever n all that. but if a batman beyond did come to life they should have bale play bruce and some one young play the new batman..and for bad guys again Killer Croc!!
