Here is my Top 5:
5. Batman: Nine Lives
Out of the "Big Three"( Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman) Only Batman can pull of Noir, He is a perfect fit for hard-boiled crime. In this Elseworlds tale, Writer Dean Motter imagines a post World War 2 Gotham City filled with corruption, no good hoodlums and championed by a man dressed like a bat. Nine Lives casts classic Batman villains as gritty noir crooks; no acid scars for Two-Face, Joker is a trigger-happy Hustler, although all villains keep their personalities. The story boils down to a classic "Who Done It" when Selina Kyle turns up dead and everyone from Private Eye Dick Grayson to Bruce Wayne ends up a suspect. Nine Lives is one of the most unique and pleasurable Batman books ever written.
4. Batman & Dracula: Red Rain
Yet Another elseworlds tale, this one pits Batman against Farther of all Vampires (Except Twilight vampires), Dracula. Dracula wishes to overtake gotham one bite at a time, only Batman is standing in his way, Batman doesnt stand a chance....until he becomes a vampire himself. Awesome art as well by Kelly Jones, who's Bat-ears are longer the Wolverines claws.
3. Batman: The Cult
One of the most overlooked Batman tales is also one of the best. It begins with the Batman in dire straits, held captive deep beneath Gotham by a group of cult fanatics. Their leader, Deacon Blackfire is determined to break Batman's will and brainwash him to becoming a devoted follower of his cult. It works. It's shocking, jarring and incredible. The Batman's will is destroyed and even after his escape, he remains on shaky ground.
2. Batman: Hush
Hush is as "love it or leave it" as they come, spanning over a year, this arc made some significant changes to the Bat-Universe; Bat's started dating Catwoman, Two-Face gets his face repaired, and the screws in his brain repaired and the body of Jason Todd goes missing from its resting place. This story has a much more modern feel. There are some truly unforgettable moments, such as when Batman kicks Superman's red underwear covered ass. Yes, there are some aspects that are to be taken with a grain of salt, particularly the identity of Hush.
1. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Frank Miller forever changed the landscape of superhero tales with The Dark Knight Returns. Having been retired for ten years following the death of Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne finds himself compelled to don the mantle of the bat once more. This in turn revives the insane criminals who'd been almost comatose for the past decade. Also, Superman get's his ass handed to him again by The Dark Knight
