Christian Bale Going from The Dark Knight to Dark Tower?

Christian Bale Going from The Dark Knight to Dark Tower?

While not yet set in stone, according to the New York Post, Bale is definitely one of the frontrunners for the lead role.

The New York Post, citing and un-named source claims that after his Golden Globe win for 'The Fighter, that Christian Bale has surpassed Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem to play the lead role in Ron Howard's upcoming adaption of 'The Dark Towers' book series.

The same article says that Jennifer Carpenter from 'Dexter', and Ghite Tazi, are both in the running for the female lead Susannah.

I'm not too sure how I feel about this news, I like Bale, I think he makes an amazing Batman, and he was awesome in 3:10 To Yuma, I'm just not sure if I want him playing the lead in the adaption of one of my favorite books.
But with him going to be done with Batman shortly, he will most certainly be free for another large franchise.

What do you guys think?

Well, this is obviously B.S.
Why would two white women be up for the role of Susannah, a black woman?
And this isn't one of those situations in which the character's race is ambiguous. Susannah is DEFINITELY an African American. Her being black is integral to her character's story and development.

Again, B.S.

Bale has the greatest range of any actor i've seen in a long time, anyone that's seen TDK and American Psycho will tell you that, i think he'd make an amazing Roland Deschain

@gibbyblaylock, it seems they are confusing the characters.Another article I saw said the two actresses were in the running for "Susannah, Roland's lost love".They obviously mean Susan.

Anyway, unless they're doing a drastic change, Susan is only 16, and those actresses are way too old.

No to Bale, yes to Viggo!

I dunno...would he really commit to such a long-term project, especially involving TV shows?

And I gotta agree...I love Jennifer Carpenter, but if they really meant Susannah, she HAS to be African American. It's pretty crucial to her part of the story...

I like Bale but I think Viggo's on a different level. That guy just dominates every scene in every movie he's in.

Absolutely have to agree w/ gibbyblaylock on this one and call B.S.

If Ron Howard casts a white woman for Sussanah I won't step foot in a theater. That being said, I think it is HIGHLY unlikely RH would do that.

Had this article claimed that Lauren Velez from Dexter was up for the role, I wouldn't be skeptical.

When I read this earlier I wasn't too excited about hearing Bale was up for it, then I remembered that he was absolutely amazing in The Fighter.

@AlexDeLarge what do you think about Ben Foster for Eddie?

WHITE ACTRESSES SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY SUSANNAH! If a black man can play a Norse God, then there shouldn't be a problem! Oh, and no Bale for Roland. He wouldn't do it anyway.

...i very seriously doubt he will take it tho and thats good imo. he's a fantastic actor but i feel like he would portray roland pretty much in the same way as he did John connor in terminator, which i'll pass on.

instead he should do more of the different kind of roles like dicky in the Fighter...that was one of his best performances and it tests his great ability

@TwilightMutant: this isn't an issue of race, this is an issue of staying true to the source material. There's no rule of thumb that says none of the norse gods were black, we just assume so since norse gods are created by a predominantly white culture. Susannah Dean is black--Stephen King wrote her as a black woman. It's like having Will Smith as Captain America, absolutely f*in ridiculous.

No thanks Ron Howard, Id rather see Vigoo Bale is a terrible choice.....
JosePetrelli12
JosePetrelli12 - 1/26/2011, 3:15 PM
Well... Hollywood changes the races however they want. Fox was suppose a Black Women in the WANTED comic, and they cast Angelina Jolie...

That being said: Get over it TwilightMutant - There is a Black Norse God, now. Deal with it. Sorry they couldnt keep all the roles white...

I'd be happy with any solid actor in the role of Roland Deschain. Viggo, Javier, Bale - all good for me.

@JOSE- I never said anything against the casting of Idris Elba. I said if they can cast a black man in a white role, why cant they cast a white woman in a black role? That would be a double standard.
Dusk
Dusk - 1/26/2011, 3:46 PM
@WEETON- Did you really compare Susannah to Captain America? Also, Susanna was created black, and Heimdall has been drawn as a white guy for how many years?

Can't go wrong with either Viggo or Bale.

Has anyone else noticed how crap Ron Howards last 3 or 4 movies have been?
Gunslinger
Gunslinger - 1/26/2011, 4:20 PM
Can't see Bale committing to TV series in between the movies. Too high profile. Pretty good in 3:10 to Yuma and he's a great method actor, with a really , really wide range, but still think Mortensen would be the perfect Roland.

As for this chick I never heard of playing Susannah (couldn't help but notice the massive chin btw and her being white), that's just wrong. I was pissed with the casting of Heimdall, and I would be pissed about this too IF it were true. She's supposed to be black!
Gina Torres (Firefly, Alias, Angel and Matrix II and III) would be perfect imo.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 1/26/2011, 4:32 PM
Dark Tower is being made into a movie, not a TV series, pretty sure anyway.
Hood28
Hood28 - 1/26/2011, 4:36 PM
i could totally see this. viggo is gettin a bit too old and bale is still in his early 30s i believe. viggos a good actor but im with bale
JonStarkgaryen
JonStarkgaryen - 1/26/2011, 4:39 PM
@Alex

both would kill it as Eddie, I agree.

@Hood. Roland is hundreds of years old man! I always pictured him as mid 40s even early 50s.

In the series it talks about his joints aching and popping quite a bit. I sure as $hit better not be falling apart like that when I’m in my early 30s!!

@Ryguy: they’re doing a movie, then a tv series season, then a movie, then another series etc….
JonStarkgaryen
JonStarkgaryen - 1/26/2011, 4:40 PM
Also, if Susannah isn’t black, are there any other black characters in the entire series? They’ve got to keep things how they are for publicity reasons I would assume.
