GAME OF THRONES And UNWELCOME Star Kristian Nairn Would Like To Play DCU's Solomon Grundy (Exclusive)

Many of you will know Kristian Nairn best for his role as Hodor in Game of Thrones, but Unwelcome star has now shared his hopes to play the DCU's Solomon Grundy! Find his comments in full right here...

Horror movie Unwelcome stars Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp) and Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending) as a couple that escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquillity of rural Ireland, only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden.

As warned by their new neighbours, in Irish lore the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid, and that's where things get...messy.

Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn plays the mysterious, hulking Eion in this Irish folk horror, and we recently caught up with the actor to learn more about his experience working on the project. At the end of our conversation (which you can watch in full below), we asked Kristian if he's keen to work on a superhero movie or TV show.

"Yeah! I am a huge superhero fan. I have a tattoo of Thor on my arm," the Hodor actor exclaimed showing off the impressive piece of body art. "I’m an original fan from the comics and a big Marvel and DC fan."

"If we’re going to stick with the types I could play…obviously, they can do anything with CGI these days, but I can’t imagine myself playing the new Wonder Woman [Laughs]. I’d try it! I’d love to play Solomon Grundy. I’ve got the hair and dialogue down. I’d love to. We’ll see what happens. Who knows? I’m putting it out there. Hey, [James Gunn]!"

We often see actors put themselves forward for various comic book movie roles, but this would be a terrific piece of casting and a great way to bring the classic Batman villain to life minus visual effects.

While Solomon Grundy did appear in Stargirl and Gotham, we've yet to see him in a movie, and he's a baddie that could definitely fit in with the quirky direction DC Studios is seemingly taking the DCU in.

What do you guys think? As always, let us know in the comments section.

Unwelcome is coming to AMC Theaters' Thrills and Chills Lineup on March 8 and hits Digital on March 14.

Grundy would be dope. I'd like to see a live action Batman fight someone that isn't just another person with a mental disorder. Give me some of Batmans mystical villains.

@kazuma - Yeah, I been saying for years Clayface is long overdue... and not that Harley Quinn one 😑

@The1st - YUP.

Using another doppelganger as a villain is getting so tired. Superheroes are much more interesting when they have to overcome obstacles beyond their powers.

Haha Josh’s interviews are so awkward. Every single time. Hilarious to watch, but the worst is when he self-aggrandizes his oh interview: “‘I have a tattoo of Thor on my arm’, the Hodor actor EXCLAIMED”… maybe Josh needs to write for children’s picture books instead

That would not be bad casting at all!

They can relate the Swamp Thing movie to Grundy. Grundy may be proof that the swamp has supernatural properties and for that reason it is the object of study. So Grundy exists in the DCU.

Give me The Mountain instead, that would be sweet

@Repian - I have an idea for them going the Darth Vader route: have him as the body of bane with Javier Bardem doing the voice beneath the mask.

Just seeing Grundy in live action would be cool. Just treat him like a horror movie monster.

was grundy announced as part of guns slate? i must have missed something
KaptainKhaos - 3/6/2023, 12:33 PM
@grif - no, but between Creature Commandos and Brave & The Bold, I can see him showing up

Kristian Nairn WANTS to play Grundy? DC, get this man a contract! If he is name dropping Grundy, the man knows what is good about DC comics (that isn't complete Bat-centric, even if he has done his time against the Caped Crusader).

Since DC can't seem to get a Justice League Dark movie off the ground, I would love to see a live action "Defenders/Order" as presented in JLU. It was such a great roster and the threats they could take on would scratch the eldritch itch while still holding onto some mainstream heavy-hitters.
Doctor Fate, Inza, Aquaman, Solomon Grundy, Hawkgirl. Hell, go full JLU and have Amazo join the team after the League fails to take it down.

That would be fantastic.

Tie Grundy into Swamp Thing in some way. Bring Zatanna(Eiza Gonzalez please!) in as a mostly hero who has sympathy for Grundy in the mix.

Make it so Mr. Gunn.

Considering he’s had a career as a character saying his own name all the time (Hodor), I’m sure Grundy will Be up his alley “Solomon Grundy Born on a Monday!”
