Is Batman Financing Terrorism? Disturbing Info About That Litigious Turkish Mayor

This is the reason why we must have tort reform. I'm sure you've heard the laughable story being reported about the Mayor of Batman, Turkey who is suing Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros for using the town's name. Well, there is more to it than that my dear reader, and it's not funny anymore. Turns out that this guy has gotten money from DC comics before, and used it to advance terrorism...

For those who have been under a rock. Here is the breakdown...

The mayor of a city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from blockbuster "The Dark Knight."

Huseyin Kalkan, the Mayor of Batman the city, has accused "The Dark Knight" producers of using the city's name without permission.

Obviously, this is a litigious dumbass trying to earn a buck, right? I mean, this can't possibly be considered a legitimate argument. After all, the city itself wasn't called "Batman" until 1955, and no one has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the "Batman" TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton's first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that "Dark Knight" is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a big part in giving this Turkish asshole the idea, right?

Anyway, it turns out that the guy has done this before--AND WAS PAID OFF BY DC COMICS!!! Shame on you DC for rolling over like that! Now we don't have to wonder where he got the idea. What's more, he may have used the pay-off to promote terror! This is from Wikipedia...

"He first gained international notoriety after it was revealed that he had filed a lawsuit against DC Comics for using his city's name in their Batman Comic book franchise. In 2007, DC Comics confirmed that they had settled with the city for an undisclosed amount. In February 2008 the mayor was sentenced to 10 months in jail for promoting terrorism. Prosecutors speculated that Kalkan may have used money from his settlement with DC Comics to fund terrorism."

That's right fans. Our beloved caped crusader, the dark knight of gotham, may have indirectly financed terrorism. CLICK HERE and HERE for details of Kalkan's imprisonment. The article relays that his party has ties to terrorists, and that he was passing out propaganda and speaking in favor of a known terrorist.

"The court in Diyarbakir sentenced Huseyin Kalkan, the mayor of nearby Batman and member of Turkey's main Kurdish DTP party, under a provision that penalises helping terrorist groups (PKK) and spreading their propaganda."

The PKK, or Kurdistan Workers Party, is regarded as a terrorist organization by the government of Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

How come nobody is reporting this? I want to know why a dude outside of the country can even bring a lawsuit of this kind at all. Aren't there some provisions in copyright law for language barriers? Does the word/name of "Batman" mean anything in the Turkish language? And is it spelled or pronounced the same way in a foreign country?

Beyond the pale is this jerk's claim in his lawsuit...

“The mayor is prepping a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros., which owns the right to the Batman character, including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film’s success has had on the city’s inhabitants.”

Can you believe that bullcrap?!! Especially since it is their own screwed up religion and culture that is REALLY to blame for that kind of evil stuff--like the degradation of women and "honor killings." But that's exactly what the bad guys do. They blame others for their problems.

Here's a bit from FilmThreat.com...

"Apparently the town of Batman, Turkey does have a high rate of female suicides, and Batman is to blame. Not the caped crusader, but the town itself. As the New York Times reported two years ago, the city of Batman, Turkey has an inordinate number of so-called ‘Honor Suicides’. What’s an honor suicide? Well, it’s like an honor killing, but better! Instead of a young girl or woman being murdered by her own family for some random sexual offense (adultery, sex before marriage, getting raped, glancing at a boy, etc), the ’shamed’ family makes the girl kill herself."

Well, as mentioned above, this has ceased to be funny. Someone needs to bitch-slap that dude.

I can't believe the gull of this guy in Turkey, get over it. This is so bogous. But in the article that it's the culture, I respectively disagree, in the States we have all kinds of murders, & suicides, etc. You can't blame it on the culture, it may have an influence, but ultimatelly we all have free will, regardless of what culture, religion etc.

I've always prefered chicken anyways. Turkey's to dry for my taste. I wonder if that guy is aware that americans eat his country every year on thanksgiving of all the holidays. Mabey that's why the suicide rate is way up. "The americans are coming to eat us mom!!! There not gonna eat me that easily!"

To answer your questions...

1. No body is reporting it, because it's a frivolous lawsuit that obviously can't be won. (As you said, the town didn't even name itself batman until the comics already existed.)

2. A dude outside the country can bring the lawsuit because there is not a rule saying that if you aren't an american you can't sue americans. Americans can rip other people off, and those other people should be able to sue when they are ripped off.

3. I don't think it will even matter what Batman means in Turkish, especially if the comic existed before the town got its name.

4. There is no precedent for a whole city being able able to pin the blame for all of it's crime on a movie, so that element of the mayor's charge is even more frivolous than the intellectual property infringement charge. (Especially since he's blaming the name of the city, which wasn't acquired until after the comic existed. If there was such stigma attached to the name already, why name your city the same thing?)

5. You shouldn't use Wikipedia as a reliable source.

6. There's nothing about settling with someone that implies guilt, and I also don't think it's fair to pin the "supporting terrorism" label on WB just because they bought off a person who threatened to sue them, who then went out and supported terrorism. If you were rich and someone filed a frivolous lawsuit against you, you'd probably try settle the case. This doesn't mean you are guilty, but only that the cost of litigating the suit is higher than the benefit v. risk of litigating. This doesn't somehow equate to reprehensible action just because the person who sued you in the first place used the money for something you don't agree with. Obviously you don't want that person to have your money to begin with, but you are essentially being forced to give him a smaller settlement to avoid the bigger lawsuit. This is a minor form of coercion, and WB should definately not be blamed for "supporting terrorism" as a result of a settlement that they begrudgingly paid.

7. Also it's not as if they knew where the money was going to go, and even if they did there's nothing negligent about settling with someone even if you reasonably believe the money will go to terrorism.

WTF?!?!?! Why would their own families let their daughter kill herself? What kind of [frick]ing monsters would do that?!?!?! Goddamn their pride for their religion, what happened to family over there?!?!?! This asshole, this mayor is too retarded, it's a freakin comic book character, AND a city, who cares???? There's a huge difference in both. In fact, I'd be proud to call a city of mine Batman! That;d be awesome!

Apparently I've been living under a rock. I blame the election and the economy for my ignorance on this TDK info. So thanks for letting me know about this, CBM! This is really surreal, strange, almost laughable, but not quite, and very dark. Just like the Joker's sick sense of humor. As the Joker said in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker:

"That's...that's not funny!"

If any thing this guy should be getting sued. Trying to make money for something that DC had to approve before it was named Batman.

I know some folks from Turkey and well, it's sligthly more complicated than that ...

Kurds are sort of separatists, that want their own state (not only in Turkey, but also in Iraq); Turks says its bullshit and call a lot of Kurds terrorists (and they call their party, PKK i think, terrorist organisation - and they sort of are - visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurdistan_Workers_Party ). Plus, Turks have very strange history with other nations (ever heard about Armenian genocide?)

so, I wouldn't be SO sure this guy is a terrorist... yeah, its kind of complicated in Turkey
(that doesn't change the fact that guy is an absolute moron)

why would he sue Nolan? It's not like he created Batman. He just made a chode load of money off of it. If Turkey NEEDS to sue someone about batman, go for Bob Cane. Smarten up Turkey.
