JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX Cinematographer Explains Why Lady Gaga Is Perfect Choice To Play Harley Quinn

Joker: Folie à Deux cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Black Adam) has teased Lady Gaga's role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming sequel, explaining why the actress and singer is a great addition to the DCEU.

2019's Joker was a bigger hit than anyone ever imagined, with Joaquin Phoenix's take on the Clown Prince of Crime vastly different to previous iterations. A story grounded wholly in reality, Todd Phillips' movie took place in a world without superheroes and delivered a very unique origin story for Batman's greatest foe.

While the story felt largely standalone in nature, a sequel is now on the way in the form of Joker: Folie à Deux

That's expected to take place primarily in Arkham Asylum, with Arthur Fleck crossing paths with this DC Universe's take on Harley Quinn, played by singer and actress Lady Gaga. The movie is expected to include musical elements and sounds like another delightfully unhinged visit to Gotham City.

The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke to cinematographer Lawrence Sher, and while he wouldn't give too much away about the follow-up, he had nothing but good things to say about Gaga.

"She’s going to be a really cool fit for this movie and will create a similar kind of magic that Joaquin brought by himself," Sher says. "The combination of the two will be exactly what we hope, which is exciting, and we’ll find magic every day on set. Hopefully, we’ll also have a bit of madness in there. We like when there is a little bit of chaos."

He would go on to note that Joker: Folie à Deux will be shot primarily on soundstages in Los Angeles, as well as on location in New York. Shooting begins in five or six weeks' time, so that hopefully means we'll eventually start getting set photos when cameras begin rolling in the Big Apple.

Story details are few and far between at the moment, though most DC Comics movies are plagued by leaks, so don't be shocked if we learn more about the script soon!

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024. Many thanks to artist Rahal Nejraoui for the banner image above.

First it was Taxi Driver, now it's a musical One Flew over the Cookoos Nest. Lol jokes aside, I loved Joker. Maybe Todd Phillips is going for a musical so he can still get the best picture nomination lol

@Kyos - (If you've never seen Taxi Driver) Joker it's a pretty well made descent into madness story. Not something worth watching twice tho

Hesitantly optimistic about the sequel

Gaga was great in AHS so looking forward to seeing her in this. However the musical part is turning me off it. The first didn't need and shouldn't be getting a sequel

@BigPhilbowski - totally agree. I just dont get why at all... If the original was a musical, it would make sense... but then the original really wouldn't have made sense. I don't know, this whole thing just feels like a really dumb reach to me.

Why continue with the outside continuities?!

The first one was a pleasant surprise for me, but I was firmly in the camp that it didn’t need a sequel. However, they seem to have come up for a unique follow up, so hopefully this’ll be another Blade Runner 2049 situation.

I can't be the only one that feels the constant franchise bouncing is what is really hurting DC as a whole. I mean the brand was a powerhouse in the 90s and was deemed iconic. Now it just seems diluted in every form of entertainment.
