The first social media reactions for Warner Bros.' Joker movie are now online following its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this morning, and it sounds like the majority of critics (out of the ones that decided to share their thoughts, anyway) were very impressed by Todd Philips' unique origin story for DC's Clown Prince of Crime.

The movie reportedly received a thunderous standing ovation, and is being hailed as a "darkly funny", "thrilling", "tragic" "masterpiece" anchored by a "powerful, Oscar worthy performance" from star Joaquin Phoenix.

Strong praise indeed for a film that was expected to be highly controversial and divisive, but we'll see what the general consensus is when those reviews hit!

In the meantime, hit the "View List" button down below to check out the Twitter reactions.

But... a certain user on here said that this was going to be "arthouse Venom". These reactions don't seem right 🤔

@tmp3 - These reactions don't seem right

Seems exactly like every other movie's "first social media reaction" tweets to me.

@Reeds2Much -
The critic reviews are out as well, and the majority are very positive.

@Darkknight2149 - Critics are trustworthy this week? Is there a calendar that keeps track of that?

@Reeds2Much -
They are trustworthy enough on this site when an MCU movie gets good reviews. But when it's "convenient" for people, they are not.

Obviously everyone has to judge the film for themselves, but it getting great reviews, Twitter reactions, and being hailed as a "masterpiece" ahead of its release is nothing but good news.

Only a vocal minority of highly unreasonable DC fanboys were pushing the conspiracy theories about critics and the DCEU, if that's what you are getting at. In case you haven't noticed, DC fans are the most disappointed at how the DCEU has turned out anyway.

@WakandanQueen - I don't think it's gonna be Joaquin's best performance like some of these guys are saying, because he was [frick]ing incredible in The Master and very few performances in the last decade were as good as him in that.

@tmp3 - You know an actor is great when people debate what is their best performance.

Man that tweet from the international film critique is sounds like a 15 year old who just discovered what all of the snooty critics are saying and wanted to make his own. But I'm happy the movie is getting good reviews. That's 3 in a row for DC

That word "masterpiece" is thrown around a lot, especially with DC films, and many times inaccurately...

We'll see.

I worry that this movie will resurface those old "childhood is when you idolise Batman, adulthood is when you realise the Joker makes more sense" memes.

How u gonna tell an origin story of a character that never had a definitive origin story..well, this is one of them. Loving it, something original, on its own, elseworld kinda thing. Sign me up.

"(sentiment less about the movie being good or bad and more about how the discourse around it will drag us all down to hellllllll)"

This kind of echos my sentiments about this film. I'm worry that a certain sect of people will see this movie and unironically go "hell yeah. The Joker is the true hero of Gotham. He's right. We do live in a society."

Despite the fact that he's THE JOKER.
