JOKER: How The Ending Could Set Up A Sequel And A Possible Face-Off With [SPOILER]

We've already been told not to expect Joaquin Phoenix's take on the Joker to cross paths with The Batman, but that doesn't mean that the film completely disregards the possibility.

Todd Philips' dark thriller would certainly appear to exist in its own universe and tell a standalone origin story for the iconic DC villain, but there are a few subtle - and not so subtle - hints that this world could open up to more fully embrace the source material, and lean more heavily into the Batman mythology in the process.

JOKER Spoilers: A Detailed Plot Breakdown Of Todd Philips' Controversial Origin Story

It probably won't happen, of course, but if Warner Bros. ever did decide to continue Arthur Fleck's journey to becoming the Clown Prince of Crime and The Dark Knight's nemesis, this movie does leave a bit of leeway for it.

Below, we explore how it might be possible. If you haven't seen Joker yet, major spoilers follow.

Young Bruce Wayne

We'll start with the most obvious one: The Joker actually meets the future Batman in this movie.

As many rightly guessed, that young boy Arthur Fleck is forcing a smile onto in the trailers is indeed Bruce Wayne. Arthur makes his way to Wayne manner after discovering that Thomas Wayne is his real father, and shows the lad a few magic tricks through the gate. Bruce is unimpressed.

Their interaction is brief, but there is definitely a bit of weight and emphasis placed on the scene. Granted, part of that is down to Arthur believing he's meeting his half brother at the time.

A Different Joker

There is a theory doing the rounds that Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck could simply be the inspiration for the actual Joker, and he'll be the one to face off against The Batman in the future.

It sounds like a stretch, but this movie does actually leave some room for it.

Fleck's actions inspire an uprising in Gotham, with hundreds of citizens rioting throughout the city wearing clown masks. Isn't it possible that one of these people could take up the mantle of Joker a decade or so later, around the same time Bruce Wayne is beginning to feel a little batty?

The Murder Of Thomas And Martha Wayne

Joker leans into Batman mythology heaviest right at the end, when we're presented with a very faithful depiction of the murders of Bruce Wayne's parents.

A thug inspired by Arthur's execution of Murray Franklin live on TV and his assertion that people like Thomas Wayne are to blame for the degradation of the city follows the Waynes into an alley after a screening of Zorro. As he opens fire, he echoes Fleck's "you get what you deserve" from the Franklin killing.

Of course, we're supposed to assume this will eventually bring Bruce to the conclusion that Joker was at least partially responsible for his parents' deaths.

The Ending

The ambiguous ending, or more accurately, epilogue, of Joker is wide open to interpretation, and leaves plenty of room for Warner Bros. to fold the events of Philips' film into a shared universe.

After Arthur leaves Gotham in flames and fully embraces the Joker persona, we cut to him chuckling during a therapy session in Arkham. Is he recounting his story to his therapist, or imagining the whole thing? We know Fleck is an unreliable narrator and made up an entire relationship in his head, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

This gives the studio leeway to basically pick and choose what they want to establish as real, and what we are to believe were the delusions of a damaged mind.

That Final Shot Of Bruce

Perhaps most telling is that quick glimpse of Bruce Wayne standing among the bodies of his slain parents.

Arthur never witnessed this event, so why is it burned into his mind? It's possible that he heard about it after, but either way, this still feels like a major bit of foreshadowing, and not something Reeves or the studio would have added to the film at such a specific moment for no reason.

There were probably a few more Easter Eggs and references, but I've only seen the movie once and these are the major ones I picked up on. Did you spot any more? Let us know in the comments down below.

@Argetlam22 - plenty of people like it so how about just not watching the sequel then instead of insisting it shouldn't be a thing.

@Origame - plenty of people also liked Batman vs Superman

Does it bother you that I have an opinion?

@Argetlam22 - you directly said it should stop here because of your "opinion" and called both the film makers and the critics who liked the movie for valid reasons villains.

Argetlam22 - 10/8/2019, 4:57 AM
@Origame - I directly agreed with the comparison between critics and Metal Cooler, as in Goku and Cooler fighting like cats and dogs over the fate of Namek much like moviegoers are fighting over the fate of this film and whether it really deserves the acclaim. But sure, okay, whatever you say.

@Argetlam22 - dude he never said that. He just showed metacooler and goku fighting while saying thats the critics vs audience. You said it was the critics. In fact the guy who wrote it said metacooler was metacritic the site.
Argetlam22
Argetlam22 - 10/13/2019, 1:43 PM
@Origame - both of which involving critics arguing over controversial subject matter. The actors are respectable and talented, but the story itself is a mockery of DC mythology. This mockery is worse than the supposed controversy and should be the actual point of contention. Batman made the Joker by accident as a dark mirror of himself, this new story is all wrong. And for some reason a lot of critics and fans are ignoring that.
Origame
Origame - 10/13/2019, 2:59 PM
@Argetlam22 - so you admit that you're just ignoring both whats actually being said in this thread and the actual content of film.

Let me tell it to you right now, if your only complaint about the movie is a lack of accuracy to the comics, you really dont have a leg to stand on. Especially since this film has so many ways to interpret the film, to the point where Arthur might not even be THE joker. But even if it wasn't and its all straight forward this is the joker, who cares? If its otherwise a good movie, let it be.
Argetlam22
Argetlam22 - 10/13/2019, 4:43 PM
@Origame - so basically the movie is convoluted to the point that we don't even know if the joker is actually in it, let alone if it is faithful to ANY of the comics which this character is based on. In fact, the only reason this movie is called "Joker" is to take advantage of the comic book movie trend without using any actual comic book lore. Don't tell me how I'm supposed to feel or what to post. This movie made fools out of everyone and called it performance art. No one is talking about how amazing the story is, just how convincing Phoenix can act like a deranged serial killer clown. There's no world building and no real character development, like honestly the Halloween movies did this a lot better.
Origame
Origame - 10/14/2019, 3:38 AM
@Argetlam22 - 1) its left up to interpretation. Thats the exact opposite of convoluted. In fact you do it by not explaining everything.

2) and how is it a bad thing to take advantage of whats popular? You do realize elseworlds does the same thing right? Just think about it like an elseworlds story. Boom. Your whole complaint is gone.

3) never said how you should feel. But no one cares about your opinion if thats the only complaint you have.

4) so you tell me not to judge your opinion then you call people who like it fools? Hypocrisy at its finest.

5) then you werent looking for opinions on this. Go to youtube and you'll find story analyses and theories a plenty.

6) this isnt meant to connect to a wider batman universe. Its standalone. So world building is just a desperate attempt to critique the film when you realized you have nothing.

7) no character development? He went from a regular street clown to psycho killer. How's that not development?

The ending felt pretty close-ended to me. The Justin Theroux cameo was really cool, wasn't expecting that

@soberchimera - No, but it's weird that Theroux keeps getting these 2 second cameos in big films when he should have gotten some big offers after his amazing work on The Leftovers. He's a guest on De Niro's show

Saw it last night.

A technical masterpiece and a great performance by Phoenix but...underwhelming everywhere else.

I thought this movie was HEAVY HANDED as hell in its messaging and it repeated a lot. The story was sort of non-existent and it drags at parts. And poor Zazie Beetz.

He isn't The Joker by any means. Its clear once you watch the film and HOW FAR from Mister J he really is. They could've called this movie "SEND IN THE CLOWN" and dumped all the Batman stuff and it would've worked.

And when they do lean into the Batman stuff it feels like a different film and as if they were forced to put it in.

It was weirdly funny too. My theater laughed at things I'm not sure they were supposed to laugh at idk.

Phoenix and the technical aspects make it worth the watch, but I'm not in a rush to see it again

@MadKingCipher - They literally could've gotten anyone to do what she did. A woman off the street would've sufficed.
