In a disappointing, though not entirely unexpected development, Vera Drew's coming-of-age movie set in the Batman universe, The People's Joker, has been pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival.

Vera Drew, the filmmaker behind a queer coming-of-age movie set in the Batman universe known as The People's Joker, has pulled the movie from the Toronto International Film Festival after just a single screening over alleged “rights issues.”

The mixed-media comic book satire follows an aspiring clown (played by Drew) struggling with her gender identity while dreaming of being cast in a TV sketch show among a cast of Jokers and Harlequins.

The film, which contains multiple references to the Clown Prince of Crime and other Batman-related properties, was reportedly pulled after Warner Bros served a cease and desist to both TIFF and Drew due to copyright infringement.

This is obviously very disappointing for the creative team behind the film, though it probably shouldn't have come as too big a shock when the trailer proudly proclaims the project to be “an illegal comic book movie about a transgender clown named Joker.”

The official synopsis from TIFF reads: “With comedy criminalized in Gotham City, the show is the only government-sanctioned space for funny people, but only those who will toe the party line. Disillusioned by a botched audition, Vera partners with a birdlike slacker to found their own alternative comedy troupe, attracting not only a rogues’ gallery of would-be comics, but also the ire of a fascistic caped crusader.”

You can check out the teaser trailer below.

The People's Joker will not be screened for the TIFF judges, but since it played at the Midnight Madness segment of the festival, it is still eligible for the People’s Choice Midnight Madness award.

@MyCoolYoung - apparently their new boss is not progressive. I mean it’s only 2 for 2 counting this abs Batgirl but maybe I’m missing something. And Correlation does not equal causation but, a pattern is a pattern. Sorry dude, she’s behaving like a cheater. You don’t need to know anything else. Save that snooping energy on packing a U-Haul

@MyCoolYoung - They are using characters without permission. This is misrepresentation, which is illegal. It's got nothing to do with WB being progressive or hungry to cancel films.

I’m pretty sure all popular characters owned by large companies are subject to IP laws. Could have just made it without the name drops and made it satire style like Scary Movie and others in that genre. They can’t sue you if you just act like their property instead of actually using the names and likenesses.

@mountainman - or just made generic superhero names for the characters, like dark bird or something. Like, come on. We're making it sound like wb is picking on this poor queer movie when any film would've been subject to this.

Itwasme - 9/14/2022, 3:43 PM
@mountainman - maybe the plan was to get press? Drum up controversy. Pretty obvious why WB would stop it, and I don't think the public feels like they are in the wrong, but we are here talking about it.

@Origame - who is "we" when you say "we're making it sound like WB is picking on this"? No one seems to be making that claim at all.

@Itwasme - The makers of the movie are quite obviously playing victim here. Also this article says this is disappointing, when it’s a simple IP issue, then puts the term rights issues in quotation marks - which clearly indicates a bias. It was silly to create this using this level of intellectual property and to not expect it to be banned.

@Itwasme - ...the article and the makers of the movie. Read the article.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 9/14/2022, 7:11 PM
@Origame - neither the author, nor anything posted in this article remotely hints at them playing the victim. The movie itself was billed as illegal and the author says its not a surprise at all. Literally no sense of personal feelings come from @rormachine on this, he just says the creators must be disappointed, though not surprised.

@mountainman - the article says "This is obviously very disappointing for the creative team behind the film, though it probably shouldn't have come as too big a shock when the trailer proudly proclaims the project to be “an illegal comic book movie about a transgender clown named Joker.”"

Where are they or the author playing victim here? Of course it's going to describe the film using both "alleged" and quotations around "rights issues" because that's journalism. It's alleged because it's a legal matter that hasn't been resolved in court and the author is quoting the actual reasoning provided by WB - that's literally what journalists do. Don't make it something it's not.

Are the Batman references truly relevant to the story? Just edit them out and call her the Jokester. Also- is there a reference to the People's Elbow?

they use so much actual batman iconography, along with names like gotham city, in the press releases that it’s crazy they thought they would get away with it. they literally use joker’s comic book face on the logo lol

CassianAndor - 9/14/2022, 2:22 PM
@tmp3 - I truly believe Batman and a lot of older comic characters should be in the public domain by now and movies like this should be a relatively common sight. That said, it’s NOT in the public domain, so I’m not exactly sure what they expected either. Maybe they did expect this. Very odd.
