THE BATMAN Actor Barry Keoghan Breaks Silence On Joining The Batverse, But Can't Talk About [SPOILER]

If you've seen The Batman, you'll know that Barry Keoghan is not playing Officer Stanley Merkel! Spoilers ahead.

The Eternals actor shows up near the end of the movie as an "Unnamed Arkham Prisoner" who converses with The Riddler (Paul Dano), but it soon becomes clear that he's supposed to be The Joker - or at least, the villain who will eventually become The Clown Prince of Crime.

Keoghan spoke about joining the cast and working with director Matt Reeves during an interview with Esquire Middle East, but he doesn't seem to be ready to discuss his role just yet!

"[Dano’s] brilliant, man. And Matt Reeves and [producer] Dylan Clark especially were amazing to me – really, really amazing to me," Keoghan said. "Getting to be part of the Batman universe is [a huge deal for me]. I’m a fanboy of these movies, and especially the Batman universe. So to be in that world, I’m still pinching myself."

"I can’t really go into that," he added when asked about the inspiration for his character. "All I can say it was a Joy to work with Matt and Dylan Clark on that movie. That’s all."

Reeves has already confirmed that Keoghan is playing The Joker, but the cast has clearly been asked to keep mum for the time being. The director also revealed that he ended up cutting a scene which would have seen The Dark Knight (Robert Pattinson) pay a visit to his soon-to-be arch nemesis to pick his brain about The Riddler, but Keoghan says he hasn't seen this moment himself.

There's a lot of speculation that Keoghan will return for the inevitable The Batman 2, but Reeves stressed that the Joker scene wasn't necessarily setting anything up for a sequel in a recent interview. Could he be part of the planned Arkham-centric HBO Max series instead, perhaps?

The Irish Joker sounded cool, but the scene wasn't needed.

Reeves casting choices seem to be working though, so they must have some ideas of how to bring that character out.

On the joker...? Was Mark Hamills british when he voiced him?

I hope he isn't the joker, killer Croc would be a surprise or of they recast him with Chris pratt even more surprising

They should’ve saved the Non-Joker Joker scene for a pre cred, mid cred or post cred. I feel like that would’ve left everyone with a wow moment.

@slickrickdesigns - really don't see what difference it would've made.

He’s a great choice, but the scene reeked of studio interference. I know Reeves has said it was his choice, but it really wasn’t needed in a contained story. Hope he refines his laugh

Was it just me or could anyone else barely understand what he was saying in the scene, at times?

@BlackBeltJones - can’t speak for other people but I thought he was pretty audible

@Cap1 - I watched a review where someone said the same and I didn’t feel alone lol. I made out the whole Gotham comeback story bit and feeling like a clown but I missed a little and had to ask my friends.

@Cap1 - I also couldn’t see him all that great. I caught the hair but not the smile. I don’t know if it was my theater or the movie just being really dark.

Hopefully he does well in a future sequel or the HBO shows.

Like most I wasn't the biggest fan of his scene in the movie at first. Now that I've had time to set with it and Reeves has explained his take on The Joker more I'm intrigued. I think like Batman Reeves is more intrested in exploring the psychological side of the Joker. This Joker being a serial killer who sees himself as a "Clown" because of condition he was born with is a take on the character I'm interested in seeing more of. I can also see Keoghan really nailing a Serious House on Serious Earth Joker.

I think a more interesting character to have put in that scene would’ve been Hugo Strange. You expected Joker but swap him out and do a quick scene of Strange sitting and watching camera footage of Riddler going insane would’ve definitely peaked interest.

A shot of just those glasses he wears. The footage reflected off of the lenses. Keep his face shrouded but you can make it out somewhat. Maybe toss in a shot of the back of his bald head and we can see the screen he’s watching. Then cut.
