Deadline confirms that The Batman opened in 74 international markets this weekend, earning a total of $120 million through Sunday. Combined with the larger than expected $128.5 million the DC Comics adaptation earned in North America, the current global total is $248.5 million.
The movie didn't open in Russia, of course, and won't arrive in China until later this month.
Unlike Warner Bros.' 2021 slate, The Batman did not debut simultaneously on HBO the same day it arrived in theaters. That's never had much of an impact on international box office takings as the streaming service isn't available in most countries; however, this decision has certainly helped avoid piracy, and with relatively little competition, the movie should continue to perform well globally.
Spider-Man: No Way Home netted a massive $260 million opening last December in North America alone, so The Batman has a lot of catching up to do. To put this into context for you, the DC Comics adaptation has obliterated Uncharted, the movie that previously held the record for the second-biggest opening weekend during the "pandemic era." The video game adaptation earned $271.6 million worldwide since opening on February 18, a figure The Batman is close to surpassing after just a few days.
"Delivering the definitive take on the World’s Greatest Detective, The Batman is a sweeping, cinematic masterpiece that’s both DC’s best film and one of the most captivating, relentless, and unforgettable comic book movies ever made," we said in our recent review of The Batman.
