Andy Serkis has now been part of multiple comic book worlds on the big screen. After playing the MCU's Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, the actor stepped behind the camera to helm Venom: Let There Be Carnage (set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe) before making the leap to the DC Universe for a role as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman.
This puts Serkis in an exclusive club, and a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert saw him explain why he loves both worlds and the superhero genre in general.
"I'm just thinking who’s going to employ me the most after this moment," the actor and filmmaker joked after being asked to reveal whether he prefers Marvel or DC. "I love both worlds because I love the brightness and the boldness of Marvel stories. They’re all mythologies."
"And I do like the darkness of DC," Serkis added. "For our generation, which is why they’re so important as they touch on real human emotions, on world events, on what's going on around us. They are great allegories for our times." He's clearly a fan of the genre, and we'd bet on him keeping a foot in both worlds moving forward with Venom 3 and The Batman 2.
Comic book fans continue to squabble about which company is best, but as Serkis explains here, there's room for both (especially when they serve such a similar storytelling purpose).
The Batman is now playing in theaters worldwide.
