THE BATMAN Star Robert Pattinson On Batman's Twisted No-Kill Rule And A Dark Knight Who "Lives In The Gutter"

The Batman star Robert Pattinson has talked more about his interpretation of Bruce Wayne, sharing his take on the Dark Knight's no-kill rule by admitting he thought about slitting the throats of criminals.

The Batman promises to be a DC Comics movie unlike any before it, with Matt Reeves delving into what makes Bruce Wayne the World's Greatest Detective. This will see the hero pitted against twisted serial killer, The Riddler, but what sort of crimefighter will this iteration of the Caped Crusader be exactly?

We've seen Batman kill on screen before - perhaps most controversially in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - but Robert Pattinson shared his take on that "no-kill" rule while talking to Premiere"There is this rule with Batman: he must not kill. It can be interpreted in two ways," the actor explained. "Either he only wants to inflict the appropriate punishment, or he wants to kill and his self-control prevents him from doing so." That's a pretty twisted take, but actually makes a lot of sense.

The actor would go on to describe how he pictured Batman's war on crime in Gotham. "I imagined it that way from the rehearsal of the first fight, I thought it was funnier: something in him just wanted to slit the guy's throat! I told myself that if he spends his nights chasing criminals, it is impossible that he does not take pleasure in it. He suffers and it is a desire that overwhelms him."

"I'm sure in this first fight, he manages to convince himself that every guy in front of him is the one who killed his mother [Laughs]," he continued, "and so that allows him to vent all his rage."

Pattinson would go on to talk more about this particular interpretation of Batman, hinting at a Bruce Wayne who is living no better than the criminals he battles rather than the lavish playboy in Wayne Manor we know from the comic books. "The interesting thing is that this Batman practically lives in the gutter. He's nowhere at home except on the street when he's wearing the suit."

"He lives a criminal life, but without committing crimes! I felt like I could get something out of that," the actor added. "Anyway, I could only play a superhero if he was really dirty!"

This certainly sounds like a whole new take on Batman, though that's no bad thing at this point in the Dark Knight's big screen adventures. The sooner we get to see Pattinson's take on this character, the better, and if that first clip was any indication, this movie is going to be an insane experience.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

I'll never understand people who don't get Batman's no kill rule: he doesn't want to be like the guy who took his parents away from him. it's that simple. of course there's a self-restraint element to it but I don't think it's hard to understand. I do agree on the right amount of punishment thing, he's not gonna kill you but he's gonna make you swore off that lifestyle after he's done.

“he's not gonna kill you but he's gonna make you swore off that lifestyle after he's done.“

His rogues gallery would never share this sort of sentiment.

That sort of thing would usually only apply to low level thugs. And some know of Batman and what he is capable of but still commit petty crimes.

There will always be repeat offenders. I don't think Batman believes a beating will change their lives, I think he feels that knowing they can't operate freely within the shadows thanks to the mythology he creates will give them pause.

Going the murderous Punisher route isn't a guaranteed success. After all, Frank never runs out of criminals to kill. It's not the sort of justice the Batman seeks.

His methods are effective. As we saw in The Dark Knight film, the mob bosses were so hammered and stressed they all turned to the Joker just to get rid of Batman and the roadblock he created in their operations.

So while his presence won't deter every criminal, it is enough to reduce crime that plagues Gotham. As for his rogues gallery...many of them are clinically insane so they're more complicated than a common street thug who turns to crime by choice or due to inequities and lack of choices.

@Spidey91 - Bruce knows he is insane, and he is one killing away from being locked in Arkham.
Because he knows once he starts, he wont stop.

There is no logical reason as to why someone like the Joker still alive if it wasnt for that reason.

@Doomsday8888 - Love it. I’m fine with a Batman who starts out this filled with rage and pain, but I’d very much like to get a Batman who becomes as principled and committed to *justice* as he is in the comics. A Batman who, though still a crime fighting vigilante, could rightly and truly be called a hero. Because we didn’t quite get that with the past versions, not even Nolan’s version. And even if Reeve’s version doesn’t connect to any wider universe, it’d still be nice to see a Batman who could conceivably be a founding member of the *Justice* League and someone who could credibly stand next to Superman in his commitments to justice.

@Nightwing1015 - Any parent who puts themselves in a situation where they resort to crime knowing what kind of influence it could put on their families is fully aware of the consequences that would come from crossing paths with Batman.

This sort of analogy reminds me of the Construction of the Death Star Debate from Clerks.

I'm liking everything I here from Robert. Bruce should be all kinds of messed up and they haven't really delved into that side of him fully in other films.

Batman is smart. If they show that I'll be happy. Killing is really a simplistic end. Show Batman being so smart he wins without killing. That's much harder to do from Batman's perspective.

I don't really care if he can punch really well, I'd prefer to see him setting up the fights so they only end one way. Make it more about controlling the situation. "You ever been in a war? Did you have an abundance feeling of control?" Or whatever the quote is. Show Batman in control.

@Itwasme - I hope they do. I feel like the world's greatest detective aspect has been lacking in all of the films, even in the Nolan trilogy. I never really got the feeling of him being the smartest person in the room and hopefully they capture that.

My hope is that with the Riddler being the antagonist that they'll be able to lean into it.

Overall I am thrilled with Robat Batinbat's perspective on the character and have been impressed with his recent works, even Tenent which I felt lacked character development.
