THE BATMAN Star Robert Pattinson Says He Had A "Really Hard" Time Doing The Dark Knight's Signature Voice

Like the big-screen Batmen that came before, Robert Pattinson will adopt a husky whisper to bring the character to life in The Batman, and the actor has now revealed that the "Bat-voice" didn't come easy.

Like Michael Keaton, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck before him, Robert Pattinson will adopt a low, husky whisper (well, Bale's was more like a full-on growl) to bring The Batman to life in Matt Reeves' upcoming reboot, and the actor has now revealed that maintaining his "Bat-voice" was no easy task.

"It's really hard to get into an artificially lower register, and to do it a long time," explained Pattinson during an interview with GQ. "I mean there's a lot of scenes in this as well where you're kind of -- long dialogue scenes as Batman, which is quite unique out of a lot of the other movies in the series, and trying to kind of stay really, really low and have kind of nuance in the lines and stuff, I mean it's really hard."

There are only so many ways a character like Batman can be performed in a way that differentiates him from Bruce Wayne, and it's obviously important that he sounds as intimidating as possible. Fortunately, fans have responded well to the snippets of dialogue we've heard from Pattinson, with some even declaring (a little prematurely, to be fair) his Batman voice to be the best yet.

"I think Christian Bale did such a -- I mean it's so kind of iconic, just the voice that he was doing in it, but it's almost impossible to not do that," the Tenet star added.

Even the most hardcore fan of Christopher Nolan's trilogy would probably have to admit that Bale went a bit OTT by the time The Dark Knight Rises rolled around, but Pattinson seems to be going for more of a gravelly whisper akin to Keaton's take in Tom Burton's films.

Which actor has delivered your favorite take on the Bat-voice so far?

The little I've heard from his Batman voice... It's just ok. Pattison actually has a pretty high pitched voice, like his voice doesn't match what he looks like lol.

Bale did a great voice in Begins, but it got worse in TDK and laughable by TDKR.

No one will ever beat Conroy. Mainly because he just naturally sounds heroic and intimidating. Doesn't have to change his voice much

@KWilly - people sleep on Jeremy Sisto. Which I get since he’s only done it once.

@BlackBeltJones - He's good. Although, I really liked Troy Baker's Batman in Batman VS TMNT. Cuz he sounded almost exactly like Conroy lol

@KWilly - agreed on Baker. I think Keaton is the best love action voice too.

@KWilly - I mean, I think his voice is just fine. It's a younger Batman so if anything it would be a little odd for him to have this insanely bomming deep voice. Almost reminds me of Ben Mackenzie's voice from 'Batman: Year One' or even Keaton in that it's more of a stern whisper. That and I like that he's not using a cheap Discord voice modulator like Affleck's Batman was.

“Where were the other drugs going?!?!?!”

I spent half of college yelling that. Doesn’t seem too tough.

Rest in peace, Ivan Reitman. I grew up with his films.

Why not try affecting a voice for Bruce Wayne? Let Batman be the natural.

Or do what Adam West did and use the same exact voice all the time and nobody ever notices.

@TheManWithoutFear - I guess, technically speaking, he used the same voice, but gave both identities their own presences.

@FinnishDude - that's what I always loved about Wests performance. His Bruce was almost this regular guy, played straight and cool, then his Batman became this musing, almost melodicly spoken, intense presence with an almost Shatner level ability to chew dialog while sussing out clues. His Bruce was just a regular guy, and his Batman was this other tempo of speech all together, you could see him click over even as Bruce. When Bruce and Dick would be entertaining guest then leave the room, his entire identity changed in how he spoke and moved, even in Bruce clothes the audience knew when he switched over to Batman, and then they would run to the phone then polls.

West performance is slept on for how great it really was. All everyone remembers or talks about is the camp.

Always thought the entire voice thing was so ****ing stupid. The guy can build an airplane and uses infra-red, sonar, everything else. You know damn well he could create a built in voice box.

I'll give Snyder mountains of credit for making that idea real. And cool.

I always preferred the voice modulator for the live action stuff. You don’t even have to go too crazy with it it could be more subtle but there’s no reason a billionaire wouldn’t add that of all things to his suit to help hide his identity

The idea that Batman needs to disguise his voice just isn’t needed. It makes sense if it’s people who are close to both Bruce and Batman. But to any other person it wouldn’t matter. No one’s thinking Jeff Besos or Elon Musk are running around a city at night beating up people. Most millionaires or billionaires are even seen publicly very often.

Keaton's has always been my fave bat-voice. Low, gruff but always measured and controlled.

I know Affleck's voice gets some flack but it actually makes sense to me that Batman would use voice modulator tech to disguise his real voice. I mean, the guy is a billionaire who spent a lot of time and money building a batcave, a batmobile, a batplane and a batsuit that are loaded with tech to protect him and hide his identity and yet to disguise his voice all he does is a Clint Eastwood impersonation?

Michael Keaton is still my favorite Batman and I think his voice was the best. It wasn't overdone like Bale's.
