Like Michael Keaton, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck before him, Robert Pattinson will adopt a low, husky whisper (well, Bale's was more like a full-on growl) to bring The Batman to life in Matt Reeves' upcoming reboot, and the actor has now revealed that maintaining his "Bat-voice" was no easy task.
"It's really hard to get into an artificially lower register, and to do it a long time," explained Pattinson during an interview with GQ. "I mean there's a lot of scenes in this as well where you're kind of -- long dialogue scenes as Batman, which is quite unique out of a lot of the other movies in the series, and trying to kind of stay really, really low and have kind of nuance in the lines and stuff, I mean it's really hard."
There are only so many ways a character like Batman can be performed in a way that differentiates him from Bruce Wayne, and it's obviously important that he sounds as intimidating as possible. Fortunately, fans have responded well to the snippets of dialogue we've heard from Pattinson, with some even declaring (a little prematurely, to be fair) his Batman voice to be the best yet.
"I think Christian Bale did such a -- I mean it's so kind of iconic, just the voice that he was doing in it, but it's almost impossible to not do that," the Tenet star added.
Even the most hardcore fan of Christopher Nolan's trilogy would probably have to admit that Bale went a bit OTT by the time The Dark Knight Rises rolled around, but Pattinson seems to be going for more of a gravelly whisper akin to Keaton's take in Tom Burton's films.
