DC Comics recently released The Riddler: Year One, a comic book written by The Batman star Paul Dano that details the villain's descent into insanity.

In that, a woman is shown holding a train ticket that will take her to Metropolis. This isn't the first time we've had confirmation the city exists in Matt Reeves' Bat-Verse, as a child's book, Batman: An Original Movie Novel, revealed that a character called Dex also hailed from Superman's home and was a member of the LexCorp Race Team.

No additional details about the city are revealed in this comic book, but as Reeves had input into this story, it's fair to say Metropolis definitely exists in this specific DC Universe. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean Superman is out there, and we anticipate this franchise remaining standalone.

After all, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios is in the midst of creating a brand new DCU that will bring together the Justice League, and the former has already confirmed Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight won't be part of those plans.

Rather than having Batman cross paths with his fellow heroes, Reeves instead seems far more interested in adding new villains to his Gotham City. A Penguin TV series is already in the works for HBO Max, while we've heard rumblings about plans for The Joker, Clayface, and more on the streaming platform (though whether those will happen given the changes being made is unclear).

Ultimately, this is little more than an Easter Egg and probably not something to get too excited about. Reeves only really started delving into Gotham City in The Batman, and we'd bet on the sequel remaining there rather than heading to any other familiar locations from the wider DC Comics Universe.

Take a closer look at that panel from The Riddler: Year One below.

If fictional Gotham City is a thing why wouldn't its neighboring fictional city also exist?

These are just Easter eggs. Reeves and Gunn dont seem interested in having Superman show up in The Batman's world.

Ah cool. Makes this universe feel like the Arkham games a little bit considering those games made several references to Metropolis, Keystone, Queen Industries, ect.

As it stands, I’m 1000% more interested and invested in Reeves DC Universe than Gunn, Safran and WB’s latest attempt to replicate Marvel’s success and build another DC cinematic universe. It still all feels very corporate.

@PlusUltra - Same here, as I feel Gunn's attempt to copy Marvel will end up like every other attempt that's been made over the years, in failure.

@PlusUltra - yeah, one exists because reeves has a distinct vision for this universe and the other exists because david zaslav wants his own mcu-style cash cow. i also feel like gunn's a pretty bad fit for superman.

@PlusUltra - You were able to label it pretty well. I am sure the intentions of Gunn and Safran are good and even genuine but this all comes off as an executive order because Zaslav can't think of any other way to pay that 3$ billion debt and he can't tax write-off everything to do it.

Wow. An Easter Egg. Truly this is an age of wonder and astonishment.

His Superman would be the ideal boy scout to counter Reeves' broody Batman. At least this Batman isn't a mass murderer 🤷‍♂️ also Paul Dano was great in The Fabelmans. Solid movie, now I'm watching all the John Ford movies I haven't seen lol

@bobevanz - no but how many people died when he pursued penguin in his BatMobile. It's pretty brutal.

@bobevanz - thought dano was the mvp in fabelmans, a movie filled with excellent performances. really understated work that paid off so well. total 180 from riddler too lol

@Juggernaut2021 - and yet how many people did you think died in the first avengers movie with the attack on New York or do you think everybody not villain or hero just stood to the side in shop front windows and watched. For that matter what about sokovia or the Loki series with whole timelines ripped from existence or at the end of end game. Or again do you think at the end of end game everybody was informed both good and bad just fight in this paddock and allow non combatants to watch from the sideline.

@Juggernaut2021 - The same amount of people who died in Nolan's car chase in Batman Begins. IE in real life, many; in the movie-verse, "It’s a miracle no one was killed!" No one dies in movies unless we're shown their corpse.

I will say at least in Begins, he was trying to save Rachel in time. He goes after The Penguin for information he may or may not have, lol.

@bobevanz - literally every Batman in film has killed people. Some were heavily implied, some were off screen, some were straight up shown lol

Oh and if you don’t think anyone died in that Penguin chase that was over a WRONG HUNCH then you really are lying to yourself to hate on Batfleck lmao

TheLobster - 1/2/2023, 11:09 AM
@Vampyre75 - [frick]ing seriously. I’ll never get the logic of some fanboys who freaked out over Batfleck killing goons who were trying to kill him but then cheer on other comic book films where there’s innocent bystanders killed. Make it make sense.

@Vampyre75 - the comment was based on Batman being a mass murderer. Stay on task

@DalekCraigWasson - his choice to pursue the penguin so aggressively killed people and no one was in danger
Different scenario

Juggernaut2021 - 1/3/2023, 10:13 PM
@Juggernaut2021 - I have zero issue with Batman killing villains. When his no kill rule seems to go out the window for innocent bystanders I do take notice

I still think you can build the DCU from The Batman. It’s not that grounded. It’s architecture and characters alone feel less realistic than Nolan’s universe (minus Bane).

I think it could work AFTER the Batman trilogy ends, have Superman show up and show it was connected all along.

I would hate to see Reeves’ version of Supes on the big screen. His Batman was bad enough. Bullet proof Batman realism.

The real question: Do real legendary characters like Bigfoot, Frank Zappa's ghost, & Gusto exist in Matt Reeves' fictional Batman universe?

We were a group of 4 girls, 3 guys. We all dressed the part. Pure Saturday night Fever. We ruled the best disco in Texas.

The girls could dance it like pros. Us guys all sucked & just danced when the girls made us. We did it because...well... 4 hot chicks....lotsa pot...lotsa booze.
