Even though director Christopher Nolan recently told Empire that he is not officially attached to direct the as-yet-untitled Batman 3, considering how successful the previous two movies were and the fact that his brother, Jonathan Nolan is working on the script, it seems a foregone conclusion that he will be directing the movie. Perhaps he's really got tunnel vision for his latest movie, Inception, or maybe he's holding out for the biggest possible paycheck he can get, but whatever the case may be, there's no doubt in the minds of comic book movie fans that he will be at the helm of the next (and possibly final) chapter in the current Batman movie franchise.

So, what evidence do we have so far?

Nolan said emphatically that Mr. Freeze will not be in Batman 3 and it would be in extremely poor taste to bring back the Joker without Heath Ledger. There's a seemingly throwaway line in The Dark Knight (TDK) that some have taken to indicate that Catwoman might very well be appearing in the next movie. Others have pointed out that "Mr. Reese," the man who discovered Bruce Wayne's identity in TDK, sounds a lot like "mysteries" and that this may be a clue that the character will be returning as the Riddler.

Whatever the case may be, CBM fans have spoken and they want the Riddler. The Batman 3 Villain Poll received over 5,000 votes and nearly 40% of those were for the Riddler. Surprisingly, Bane was the second most requested villain to appear in Batman 3, with Catwoman coming in third.

Here's the breakdown:

The Riddler
2,597 Votes (39.90%)
Bane
675 Votes (10.37%)
Catwoman
624 Votes (9.59%)

The Penguin
462 Votes (7.10%)
Black Mask
450 Votes (6.91%)
Harley Quinn
366 Votes (5.62%)
Clayface
313 Votes (4.81%)
Hush
296 Votes (4.55%)
Mr. Freeze
231 Votes (3.55%)
Man-Bat

181 Votes (2.78%)
Red Hood
144 Votes (2.21%)
Poison Ivy
124 Votes (1.91%)
Anarky
46 Votes (0.71%)

So, what do you think? Will it be the Riddler? Should it be the Riddler? And, if so, who should play the Riddler?

I voted for Bane. I know he's become a joke thanks to his ridiculous portrayal in Batman & Robin >Ek, almost vomited just writing that< but he was pretty cool when he first debuted in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1. He was conceived as a dark reflection of Doc Savage.

he's fine on what he does, very diverse, just wouldn't work as well, that's just my slight bias.

Keep your Riddler. I'll take Hugo Strange and Black Mask any day.

i think it'll be one of those four.

@Brent Sprecher - Exactly. Javier Bardem would be awesome as Bane. The Joker was an agent of chaos to Batman's agent of order and discipline. I see Bane as another agent of order and discipline, but with totally different goals from Batman. If you don't want the whole venom steroid aspect just drop it an have him trained to physical perfection. Also, Bane would finally give Batman a real physical challenge and some great fight scenes.

What angle are do people want to see with the riddler? Killer, thief? I thought TDK was pretty close to having a riddler plot, what with the Joker leaving clues and all. What's gonna make a Riddler movie so awesome?

THIS cbm fan doesn't want the Riddler as the next Bats villain. Especially if Johnny Depp is going to be the Riddler. I mean if he gets the part, we might as well hire Prince, Danny Elfman and Tim Burton + 3D + Helena Bonham Carter.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 6/4/2010, 2:07 PM
Mass@ i want the riddler but you're right. what do you do with him? i think he needs to be more of a secondary villain like scarecrow was too ras al ghul. ya know? i would vote for two face making a return (I KNOW I KNOW he "died" - but we never saw a body so he could've just as easily be brought back. even if they wanted him dead at the end they could change their minds because of what happened with ledger)

so if you were to ask me i would say have two face be the new head of the mob replacing falconi and maroni and have the riddler in the background figuring out who batman is and i would model him after john doe from seven like many people have said. don't show him until close to the end but have his presence felt throughout.

that'd be crazy hard to pull off but also great for marketing! "who is the riddler?"
Betty

If they do do the Riddler, lol, it would have to be a Complete reinvention of the character.

MassExecutions1 - 6/4/2010, 2:15 PM
@OdinsBeard - I like your mastermind idea.

You know what would KICK @$$? Have the Riddler's face hidden for most of the movie and have several actors in the movie that are all well suited to play the Riddler as suspects but don't reveal which one really is the Riddler until the end! That would make a Bazillion dollars!
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 6/4/2010, 2:17 PM
While I like a villain who can challenge Batman intellectually, I also want a villain who he can actually fight.I've seen him fight enough thugs.Bring on someone who will be a challenge.

ecksmanfan - 6/4/2010, 2:18 PM
Betty just nailed it. I don't want the Riddler, its' too soon after the Joker and they are too much alike. Unless they completely reinvent the character and at that point...what's the purpose?

I still say bring in Black Mask and Grundy! Bane would work also.

Leonardo Dicaprio as the Riddler
Eviltwin
Eviltwin - 6/4/2010, 2:19 PM
No Riddler for me either. It's been done already, we need something we haven't seen yet.

I say bring back Ra's Al Ghul and add Talia to that for a love interest for Bruce/Bats. Could play it up where she sees both sides of both men's ideals and struggles as to which side she will choose.

You could still do Joker. Have him in an Arkham cell and have Batman use him like Hannibal Lector, and keep him in the shadows. Somebody suggested on another article that Joseph Gordon Levitt would be good. Him or Chris Hemsworth. I saw an interview with him awhile ago and couldn't beleive how much he sounded and looked like Ledger!
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 6/4/2010, 2:22 PM
Mass@ wasn't there an arc where there was a villain committing murders and Batman was losing his mind and beginning to think the person committing the murders was himself? man! i can't think of where i saw that story before. i know it was the basis of the first "Dexter" novel but i feel like i've seen it in comics also.

that would add one more suspect to your idea of having it be more of a "whodunit" (for lack of a better word) - if batman was being driven to the edge by all of his crusading and his busy night life and protecting Gotham from Two-Face and his re-energized mob. then this guy pops up murdering people left and right and leaving behind clues and before long bruce begins to think he might be the one behind them? that would be cool imo. but you'd have to keep the casting of the riddler a secret and that would limit the amount of scenes he could be in which probably wouldn't do the character justice.

i dunno man! i just started typing! lol
StrangerX
StrangerX - 6/4/2010, 2:28 PM
I have to agree with Tazmaniak we need both. A villain that can challenge Bats mentally and can fight. So wit will def have to go back to the begins with a Ras al Ghul type character, and the Riddler aint it.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 6/4/2010, 2:28 PM

leee@ i could see some more corrupt police officers "employing" some of the characters you just named to assist in their bat-hunt. i think that would be a good way to go for the new movie. good call.
MassExecutions1
MassExecutions1 - 6/4/2010, 2:31 PM
Whoa. A "There is no Riddler" thing? Crazy. We could throw that in there. Also, the movie makers could cheat and shoot scenes with multiple actors to throw everybody off. You would shoot alternate reveal scene with all the actors it could be, of course, and just not make the final theatrical cut until the last minute.
MassExecutions1
MassExecutions1 - 6/4/2010, 2:33 PM

DaenerysTargaryen - 6/4/2010, 2:34 PM
Off topic: Isn't the Riddler's name Edward Nashton or is it Edward Nigma? Because if it's Nashton then if you notice on the Gotham Times (one of the Dark Knight's viral marketing things) the writer of the article called "Dent cannot be trusted" is a guy called Edward Nashton. Forshadowing maybe?
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 6/4/2010, 2:34 PM
Mass@ yeah! and knowing how secretive he kept his "Inception" script... Nolan is the guy to pull it off...

Lee@ gotta keep that thread from TDK... corrupt police all the way!

48and2
48and2 - 6/4/2010, 2:35 PM
He hasn't been done as Nolan will do him.

I knew these were about the numbers from keeping track of it myself - you guys should look around the rest of the net, it's probably higher.

I like Bane too, and Catwoman... and would prefer the Black Mask/Riddler/Deadshot trifecta - although there will be a fem fatale.

I still like Depp, but I bet Dicaprio will get it if anyone does.

@LEEE: Thanks, dude!
@conformist21: I agree. He's a great actor, but he's overexposed.
@Odinsbeard: JGL is a fine young actor and Nolan has a tendency of using the same actors so you never know.
@MassExecutions1: Exactly!
@Betty: Ha! Good point!
@tazmaniak: That's why Bane is perfect! He's smart and a good fighter!
@LEEE: I would take Deathstroke in a heartbeat!
@Anil: Skeet is definitely an underrated actor, but I don't know if he's Nolan-verse good.

@teabag LMAO awesome. I voted for bane too but Riddler would be awesome but only if he is psychotic and murderous as well as being equally ingenious. Hmmmm now who would play the Riddler I dont know. i know the fave is Depp but look at it this way. When heath was picked everyone was like oh hes gonna suck and guess what...he blew everyone away. So i think it should go to someone equally unexpected.

NO NO NO!

No catwoman..been done before and GREATLY I might add!

No Bane..Been done before and POORLY

No riddler..Been done before..and it was OK..
Deep would make a fine riddler but that is just
to predictable!

I want DEATHSTROKE!! Someone NEW! and someone WITHOUT
POWERS..just a master of mastrial arts like batman himself!..We need someone more down to earth to
finalize the arc. and SLADE would make the dark knight
his BIT*H!!

Also imagine the final battle between these two! WOW!

Man, I am falling in love with this Riddler who done it idea. Yeah, I know it was my idea but I feel like I'm cheating on my Bane idea, which I am also in love with. Cast Guy Pearce, Johnny Deep, and Leo Decaprio or whoever and have them all be suspects but don't reveal who's really the Riddler till the end. Pure awesome. You can have them hire Deathstroke or Deadshot in the course of the movie, too.

I think you could make theft the Riddler's M.O., rather than murder. Or he could have a specific vendetta against some one. You just have to play up what an egoist he is. He leaves clues because he's so smart it doesn't matter. I think that could work in Nolan world.
