How can the potential villains in Batman 3 be done in the Nolanverse?

With all the rumored villains for the next Batman movie, here is my take on how they could be done

This is an article I've been sitting on for a while and with SDCC here I decided to polish it off and post it..

The speculation won’t stop on the Villain/Villains for the next Batman movie until there are actual pictures of the actors/actresses cast BUT here is how I think they could be done..

We all have our lists of who we would like to see in Christopher Nolan’s final chapter of HIS Batman series and without further ado, here are mine….

CATWOMAN. A smart sexy con artist who lives in the Narrows, Selina Kyle never shows her true identity to anyone (wigs, make-up etc) but she is greatly inspired by the Dark Knight. Her costume could consist of similar material to Batman. Finding and seducing a weapons manufacturer who also deals in Kevlar, Selina could easily sneak into his warehouse and steal guns and armor. Her mask could even cover her entire face so maybe even the audience would be guessing who she was until the very end of her story arc. Bruce doesn’t always need a new love interest in each new movie, like in TDK his “covers” work perfectly. Batman and Catwoman should interact, not Bruce and Selina, if they have to interact then Selina should just walk by Bruce at a charity function or something of that nature but that is all. Catwoman is strong and cunning but also mysterious and clever, she deserves to be done right and Christopher Nolan can do her justice.

PENGUIN. An overweight club owner (maybe the same club Batman went to in The Dark Knight) with a napoleon complex who used to deal in rare black market merchandise. I think this character would be really good as an informant to the police and Batman. I like what I’ve read before about the Penguin having small role ala Victor Zsasz, you don’t even have to call him Penguin, just Oswald would work.

RIDDLER. This one is tough. The Riddler has always been compared to a poor man’s Joker and I know that in Christopher Nolan’s hands he could be done right, I’m just not sure yet that he could carry an entire movie as the main bad guy. The only way I could see it being done right is if he was an apprentice to The Joker, someone behind the scenes that we never saw in TDK. Someone who was always a follower and needed to create his own crazy persona to impress those he admired. What better way to impress The Joker (in his mind) than by outsmarting Batman? Also Joseph Gordon-Levitt DOES look the “Heath Ledger Joker” part but how much cooler would it be to see that similarity put to use as The Riddler, scars and all?

HARLEY QUINN. Much like the Riddler, Harley Quinn could be an apprentice to the Joker. At some point towards the end of the movie, the audience is being show a woman (camera facing her back) walking down a corridor at Arkham Asylum. Carrying a clipboard, she is checking off inmates names when she reaches another door, she unlocks it and walks down another corridor. At the very end you can see security cameras pointing towards a locked room. The woman finally gets to the locked room and you hear her whisper, “Hi there pudding”.

MR. FREEZE. I know Christopher Nolan has said that Mr. Freeze won’t be in his Batman movies but I started thinking how he could be done. The name could be taken as a “Cold hearted enforcer” (not trying to get into AhNuld puns haha), or drug kingpin. Since meth is also known as “ice” then that could be an interesting twist on the name and with Victor Freeze (in modern continuity) being a scientist, makes even more sense. Just a thought but I like Mr. Freeze in the comics and there he should stay (or animated, BTAS: Heart of Ice….amazing storytelling written by Paul Dini and directed by Bruce Timm). If none of these then maybe just show his original name “Mr. Zero” on an inmate list at Arkham Asylum.

RAS AL GHUL. We didn’t see him NOT escape the train crash….you never know, he could pop up in a cameo PLUS he’s a frickin NINJA, come on….ninja, escape, surviving on a mountain top, ninja….you get my point. If Bruce finds another love interest, then maybe we don’t know who she really is until towards the end with Ras stepping out from the shadows and saying to Bruce, “I see you’ve met my lovely daughter”(IMO Talia Al Ghul could be played by Debora Nascimento at least in the looks department) A new bodyguard for Ras could even be called “Shiva” or just Sandra. Just a nod to the character.

TWO-FACE. Harvey Dent is dead….Two-Face on the other hand….

BLACK MASK. In the same vein as Mr. Freeze or the Penguin, Black Mask aka Roman Sionis could play a small role in the movie. Black Mask, with his entire face tattooed like a skull, is a ruthless gang leader taking a cue from The Joker to try and up the ante in Gotham City. A main baddie? I don’t think so but an important character? Yes. Black Mask could be a great example of what Gotham City’s criminals are turning into and why Batman is truly needed.

CLAYFACE. Catwomans mentor, Clayface, a name taken from an old movie character, is a master of disguise going by the aliases of Basil Karlo, Matt Hagen, Preston Payne and even Sondra Fuller just to name a few. A true con artist who has been living “off the grid” for even longer than he (or she?) can remember, “Clayface” has seen the chaos in Gotham City LONG before Batman arrived to try and stop it and decided to “disappear” and live life on his/her terms. Once again a minor character but it would be cool to see this interpretation on film since I myself am a fan of the “realistic approach” of Batman.

KILLER CROC. I read on this site recently how the Brian Azzarello written and Edward Risso drawn Batman arc “Broken City” portrayed Killer Croc in a believable light….I agree. Killer Croc IS one of the more unbelievable rogues in Batman’s rolodex. So instead….Wearing suits made of crocodile skin, Waylon Jones or “Killer Croc” as he’s known by his bosses is a ruthless money hungry drug addict ex wrestler who now works for the highest bidder to take care of pesky problems. Bane could be done in the same way and they could even be henchmen for Mr. Freeze or The Ventriloquist.

THE VENTRILOQUIST. Arnold Wesker, unbeknownst to anyone is the main bad guy “pulling the strings”. By day he is an average citizen who no one even takes time to notice but that’s just how he sets things up to be. He’s ordinary, a classic 9 to 5 type of guy. Going by the name The Ventriloquist, he pits the mob and the “crazies” against each other to gain more power and money for himself. Gotham City is just a game to him and Batman is just in his way. Upon reaching The Ventriloquists hideout, all police can find is a puppet sitting at a computer chair facing a massive screen of people The Ventriloquist has been keeping tabs on. (I just read The Questions awesome article and I could easily see this as a villain that works in the day and the night..great article by The Question, check it out)

Before you read this next part I want everyone to know who is reading this article that I like Batman “in the real world” but I’m a Comic Book fan so this IMHO would actually be really cool to see....

Maybe at the end of the movie we see all of the villains, past and present, getting ready to attack Batman and maybe that would be the time for him to get some help….”Man of Steel”….hmmm??

OR end the movie with Batman at the Bat Computer (YES BATCAVE PLEASE-“l thought this might be a good opportunity for improving the foundations in the southeast corner”). Batman looks up on the screen as you hear a news reporter say, “Sources say this is no hoax, the image you are about to see is real….then another news reporter says.. “Reports JUST in of an Unidentified Flying….Man?? Show the Bat Computer screen with a blurred dash of red and blue in the sky and then end the movie.

nothing would need to be changed about Black Mask, really. Which is why i think he would make the perfect villain. especially with the importance of the mob in these movies.

i'm of the opinion that if a character needs to be changed too much to fit in these movies, then maybe they need to use someone that doesn't need to be changed instead.

instead of saying he has a mask melted to his face, he could just be a guy thats obsessed with masks, and could wear many throughout the movie. also, he could be obsessed with getting Batman's mask.

personally, i think Black Mask is a no brainer for the next movie.

@CorndogBurglar..I agree that nothing big would have to change about Black Mask and I really like your idea about him being obsessed with masks..

The Joker is the greatest villain in comic books; and while Batman has a great rogues gallery, it will be impossible to follow not only the character, but Heath Ledgers amazing performance.I don't see any reason why Talia couldn't use Batman to unlock the Lazarus Pit, or in a more realistic approach, some high tech gadgetry to bring Ras back. The Penguin would be the easiest to duplicate, seeing how he's just a narcissist who inherited a bunch of money, but I hate the character.

i always thought you could do mr. freeze almost the same as he is in the comics. just throw out all the cheesy puns and have a guy who was in an accident trying to cure his wife. but instead of some big metal, power-enhancing suit he wears a simple hazmat suit designed to keep himself in a clean environmental with no air coming in or out. he must stay cold at all times. his gun would be like a tranquilizer gun but instead of a sedative inside of the darts the darts are filled with liquid nitrogen. so he shoots you in the leg, your leg tightens up, turns blue, and is basically frozen and a fragile as glass. i think that'd be a cool way to do him. except he wouldn't fit really in the "nolanverse" - but if i ever did a batman movie that's how i'd do freeze.

@jimoakley666..I agree with you 100% about Batman and Superman not being in the same universe, however, if Nolan walks away from Batman after this next movie then I see no harm in ending it that way
@metropolisman..thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the article, I really like your mr freeze idea
@OdinsBeard..your mr freeze ideas are really cool as well, liquid nitrogen, awesome!

Mr.Freeze. A serial killer, who's day job is a butcher, who freezes the severed body parts off the dead.

But that would destroy the whole character and he could be called something completely different :P

@nightbat he can still kill him but as comic book lore proves , death never stops anyone

The Riddler would be easy in the Nolanverse. He should be the primary villain, and heavily focused - just barely shown; much more mysterious than the other villians. I keep saying Nolan should draw influence from Fincher's depiction of the title charcter of 'Zodiac' - keep him in the shadows, focus on the aftermath of the crimes rather than the process of carrying them through. It'd give Bats a chance to showcase his detective skills on screen in a greater capacity as well. The Riddler needs to be a genius, just as crazy as the Joker - but 'tame' and more gentlemanly. He should cause terror in Gotham by torturing and killing people, but keeping a theme - and leaving clues - mailing letters to the press; forcing the GPD and the general public into a state of chaos.

The way Carrey portrayed the Riddler was so unfaithful to the comics it wasn't even funny (actually - it was kinda funny, really...) with his pink flattop and that... I think it gives people the wrong idea about the character. The Riddler really does deserve a second chance - and Nolan would be the perfect guy to do the character justice :) I'd love to see Levitt play him, but my first choice would be Ewan McGregor.

@Everyone who put a thumbs down to this article so far, I'm glad! This just shows how much passion people have for these characters and how many different ways they can be done!
@Joker08..I think your Riddler idea sounds awesome and I agree that he deserves a second chance, I was just trying to rationalize how the other rogues could work in the Nolanverse as well
Regardless of who the villain/villains are, this movie will be amazing!
ALSO, my Superman tie in at the end of the article was just the way I could see a tie in if WB not Nolan decided to blend the worlds together..

@NightBat: Thank you - the Riddler is a character that I believe deserves alot more credit, I never really saw him as the 'poor-man's Joker'... I think he really is a unique creation and has alot of potential on-screen :) And I do like your idea about him being a follower of the Joker - Nygma could be someone who was inspired by him even. Anyway, nice article :D

NightBat - 7/25/2010, 11:55 AM
@Awesome..Thanks, I got an "Awesome"!! I also REALLY like your idea about having Catwoman working for Fox and that's how she steals the material to make her costume
@Joker08..I don't believe the Riddler is a "poor man's Joker" either and it's sad that some people do. He is a very complex character that if portrayed right, is one of the only villains that gives Batman's smarts a run for it's money. Thank you, I just think the Joker will have inspired so many "crazies" that the Riddler just seems logical to have followed the Joker's teachings closely
@Denn1s..Thank you! The Joker graphic novel is amazing, it's very Nolanverse

Interesting translation of comic book characters into the real life. However, I don't see these characters functioning this way in Nolan's movies.

The new "whereisbrucewayne" campaign they are doing is a hint in itself. If Batman is on the run, "where is batman" is even more relevant to the public's interest, seeing as though they are concerned with their safety. The Riddler is obsessed with knowledge, obsessed with uncovering secrets, and being the only one with those answers. I can see him trying to expose the cover-up of Two-Face, causing Gotham to lose hope by taunting Batman to come out of the shadows and proving it himself. Of course The Riddler wouldn't allow the public to know as much as he knows about the plot, but he could find ways to hold the city ransom in order to bring Batman out of hiding. Not only would it be interesting, it would force him to use the detective skills and intelligence of Bruce Wayne that we've all been wanting to see.

This would cause Two Face to have to come back, and the way he is being portrayed now, he is a problem for both the good and the bad--he was truly an "Ace" in the hole for The Joker (the Joker was the same way).

If you want to throw a mob boss in to keep it grounded, put The Penguin in there as he tries to regroup the underworld as its leader, though I would only use him as a minor character (like Maroni in TDK). He could be an engine--there are others driving the wheel.

I like Tim Sale's take on Two-Face. He's not really crazy (at least not a first), but he can't be trusted on either side of the law. However he'll deal with both sides, bridge the gap, and somehow get involved with The Riddler's plans and plot to show Gotham "The Joker was right--we live by chance"...and Batman and Gordon have schemed to make things into something that they're not.

NightBat - 7/26/2010, 11:39 AM
@cadairjr05..While I don't agree with your ideas 100%, I really like your idea of the Riddler or another character trying to expose Two-Face, possibly Two-Face himself.
I'm a HUGE Tim Sale fan and IMO The Dark Knight portrayed that version very well.

Ra's al ghul returns, he ressurects many times in the comics, with his daughter, she can pretend to love bruce and ra's can attack his heart, Catwoman steals armor and weapons from wayne industries and fights crime as a batman wannabe and she has feelings for batman and shes like the "Copy "CAT". Bane a fired and humiliated wrestler blames batman for him being fired, and Breaks the Bat! the riddler working for GCPD to try to find batmans identity by luring him and stuff. Black mask, i dont know much about him but i just want to see catwoman shoot him in the face like in the comics. Victor freeze his wife dies and he snaps and goes on killing rampages. Two face can blame batman for getting in the way of his revenge on Gordon and hate batman even more and try to kill him.

Look, we need a really bad-ass villain for this one and the Joker would have been perfect. But seeing how Heath Ledger died,(R.I.P) we should get an actor closely resembling him and have the new villain and kill him(Joker) right in the opening.
