Tom Hardy On Becoming Famous While Acting Under A Mask In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

The actor speaks to Vulture about being a part of a movie that will be seen by so many people while his face is obscured by Bane's mask, and how he expects to be affected by the fame that will inevitably follow..

We will next see Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat's Lawless - alongside the likes of Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf and his TDKR co-star Gary Oldman - and the British actor is currently at Cannes promoting the movie, sporting a very impressive beard for his role in the next Mad Max film (Hardy can't give any definite updates on that one). Vulture caught up with Hardy in a candid interview in which he discusses everything from his drinking days, to his facial fuzz, to being compared to Marlon Brando, and of course his highly anticipated turn as Bane in Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman movie. When asked how he feels about being under a mask in what will be his biggest role to date, Hardy says he hasn't given much thought to it..

To me, it’s about the characters, it’s about the film, it’s about the process of making stunning visuals and a huge, epic movie. It doesn’t matter if my head was covered in a black plastic bag and I was bouncing around in a space hopper: That's the villain of Chris Nolan's Batman!

He goes on to say that no matter what the future holds he will continue to behave as always has "because I’m not famous in my head". And should the day come when he needs to star popping down the corner shop in a disguise, Vulture suggests he can always grow that beard back again - And I [frick]ing will as well!

Tea, I didn't hate it as much as I expected to, but I hate it a bit! Plus I'm sorry but I have a soft spot (or maybe that should be hard spot) for Miss Witherspoon.

Isn't Lawless the movie Hardy and Shia got into fisticuffs on set while filming?

Saw this means war the other day and have to say unfortunately I enjoyed it. Hardy came across as a bit of a wuss and played it well. Ever since The Take he's gone from strength to strength. @tea mate it's been that long for me I wouldn't kick it out of bed.

"I'm a huge fan of Hardy and all for Hardy as Bane, but man oh man, Shia is about the same height as him...thank god for camera tricks and angles!"

He looked like a little person next to Pine in This Means War.

Poor choice in villian this time around Nolan. Hardy could have played almost any other villian in Bats rogues gallery...and you went with Bane...brilliant.

"I don't understand why ppl keep saying that, he is a hell of a lot bigger than most people."

You would have to travel down a yellow brick road for this statement to be even remotely accurate...do you even see that picture up there?

Maybe Hardy would make a good Wolverine after Jackman?
GiantNerd
GiantNerd - 5/22/2012, 8:44 AM
@ryguy He can do the physicality part pretty well. Then they could've Darth Vadered him for the rest.
GiantNerd
GiantNerd - 5/22/2012, 8:46 AM
@ryguy I would agree about Wolverine but Hardy has air bag lips.

I mean really, I've seen nothing from Hardy that Mane couldn't achieve.

Hardy is gonna be mint in DK and if he isn't I'll set Pepe LeBeouf on him. Actually I wouldn't mind seein She LaBeouf having the grease kicked out of him again.

Giantnerd, then watch more of his performances..and if you have seen them all and still think that, with all due respect, you're wrong!
GiantNerd
GiantNerd - 5/22/2012, 9:01 AM
@rormachine I was only talking about his performance as Bane. Without a mask Tom Hardy would dump all over Mane's acting ability.
Ranger14

"I don't understand why ppl keep saying that, he is a hell of a lot bigger than most people."

He is of average height for males. He is in decent shape, but hardly bigger than most people. If he were taller and in the shape he is in, I would give you that...but he isn't.

GiantNerd
GiantNerd - 5/22/2012, 9:05 AM
They should've got freaking Chris Pine to play Bane. Jp.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/22/2012, 9:09 AM
'I mean really, I've seen nothing from Hardy that Mane couldn't achieve.'

Sorry but that's a ridiculous statement, please give me some sort of reference to this. Hardy is a legit actor in critically acclaimed films like Warrior and Bronson, Mane played Sabertooth in X-Men.
GiantNerd
GiantNerd - 5/22/2012, 9:11 AM
I mean really, I've seen nothing from Hardy as Bane that Mane couldn't achieve. * Better?
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/22/2012, 9:12 AM
Firg, is Scott Caan actually 5'5"? I bet if he got the part people on here would still complain that the real Wolverine is 5'2".
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/22/2012, 9:17 AM
Giantnerd, putting on a mask doesn't mean you no longer need to be able to act. You know that, right?

Firg, I don't think I am speculating when I say that Tyler Mane can't act.
