THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Seemingly Confirms That PENGUIN HBO Max Series Will Be R-Rated THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Seemingly Confirms That PENGUIN HBO Max Series Will Be R-Rated

During a new interview, The Batman star Colin Farrell spoke about the upcoming HBO Max series based on the exploits of The Penguin, seemingly confirming that the show will be R-rated.

Despite plenty of speculation and rumors to the contrary, it was always highly unlikely that The Batman would be hit with an R-rating, but HBO Max is not bound by the same constraints and considerations as Warner Bros.' theatrical releases, and it sounds like the planned Penguin spinoff series will take full advantage.

During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Colin Farrell spoke about his interpretation of the classic DC Comics villain. The Irish actor said he was looking forward to exploring Oz in more depth, and that he's "heard we're going to be allowed to kind of do an R-rated version" of the character.

It doesn't sound like things are set in stone here, but if the still untiled Penguin show is being developed with a R-rating in mind, there's a good chance the GCPD spinoff will follow suit.

Farrell has a relatively small part in the movie, but he delivers a show-stealing turn as Oz, so we're looking forward to seeing a lot more of him in the series and (hopefully) eventual sequel.

The review and social media embargo for The Batman lifts this Monday, so be sure to check back here to find out what we thought. You can also follow me on Twitter for an in-depth discussion, because I will have a lot to say about this one!

R-Rated you say?

Good. This way they can give a grittier examination of the Gotham underworld without being a basic Gotham retread, which had a pretty silly tone most of the time.

@ModHaterSLADE - It also had some moments of violence that were borderline R rated though. The maiming of Tabitha's hand by Butch and the quite deformed face that Jerome had in Season 3 come to my mind.

@NinnesMBC - I mean that's as edgy as it's gonna get on Fox, but yeah that was one if the nore violent moments.

@ModHaterSLADE - Hmm yeah I suppose it did fill in a bit on being edgy.

@ModHaterSLADE - Tbf Gotham was campy in places but it also mixed in very dark horror. That's why the show had an extremely unique Batman-esque tone. Remember when Penguin was straight up drowning a guy in a bathtub?

@Nightwing1015 - Yeah, which is why I said it was a camp tone most of the time. The show always had some moments that showcased just how deranged the villains were. Professor Pyg comes to mind.

F-bombs guaranteed for the spin-off if that is the case.

I got my tickets for this Wednesday so I'll see soon how good his performance is as Penguin that got everyone on board to give him his own personal TV show.

@OmegaDaGrodd - You say it as if it's a bad thing? I mean, streaming almost always gaurentees an R-rating. That and if Colin Farrell's Oswald is as interesting as some have said, then why not give him a crime show akin to the Sopranos.

Only if the story really warrants it, I think the rating is necessary. Daredevil used the MA rating well without it feeling pretentious, so I hope this show could do something similar.

Also, think Colin Farrell would make a good Bruce Wayne if it wasn't for the 'stache.

Well he'll at least get to have his cigar now. And props to him for being willing to go through all of that makeup for a whole series after this.

I'm curious for the moment to see whether the series will be able to maintain the production value and cinmeatography that Reeves is presenting his Gotham through.

Let it just be called “Oz” so it can also be a reboot of that series while we are at it.

I love the penguin one of my fav batgods Villians but is this necessary without any current rapport.

Only Loki (Villian) tv show/movie makes sense because of the rapport we have with the character. Anyone else right now makes no sense.

TV/Streaming shows don't get an MPAA rating. Saying it will be "R-Rated" is objectively false.

Ah yes, the short, sharp-nosed crime boss with a penchant for pin-stripe suits and trick umbrellas who fights a guy in a batsuit just SCREAMS for the ultra-violent and dropping f-bombs treatment. 🙄

It's an interesting topic, of whether a project can kill hype in another linked project. It's not an experiment we get to test very often. For instance, I can't think of much more boring than a penguin spinoff. Will that kill some of my hype towards The Batman series of films? What if the spinoff tanks, then is the GA less interested?

It reminds me of Inhumans. Was Feige worried that the poor quality and terrible reception might have some anti- hype effect on the MCU. The general audience might have perceived them to be in the same universe and been less interested as a result.

I need to write a thesis on anti-hype.

It doesn't apply really to the likes of the CW Flash for instance, because it is obvious that that is separate to the DC movies.
