Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder recently posted, on
Vero, a response to a critique frequently leveled against his infamously divisive film: the notion that Batman creating a Kryptonite spear, rather than weaponizing it in a more high-tech and modern way, was an arbitrary and ridiculous use of his resources.
In the post (seen below), Snyder shared a painting of Jesus on the cross, his side being pierced by the spear of Longinus, a Roman soldier. The image is captioned with, "Why with all of the technology at his disposal would Batman build a spear? Here's why."

Snyder's iteration of Superman often comes along with Messianic imagery. Its clear, and was before clarification by Snyder, that the use of a spear in
Batman v Superman was no different.
While he raises a valid point about the imagery he was going for, it is unlikely to win over critics who will likely just respond that the decision still doesn't "make sense" in a grounded world, even if it fits the movie's themes. Snyder's clarification simply plays into their arguments that the director values style over sense or substance.
