BATMAN V SUPERMAN Director Zack Snyder On Why Batman Used A Spear Against Superman During Their Battle

Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder recently took to Vero to clarify why Batman used a spear to fight against Superman during the titular battle rather than opt for a more useful form of weaponry...

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder recently posted, on Vero, a response to a critique frequently leveled against his infamously divisive film: the notion that Batman creating a Kryptonite spear, rather than weaponizing it in a more high-tech and modern way, was an arbitrary and ridiculous use of his resources.

In the post (seen below), Snyder shared a painting of Jesus on the cross, his side being pierced by the spear of Longinus, a Roman soldier. The image is captioned with, "Why with all of the technology at his disposal would Batman build a spear? Here's why."

Check it out below:

Snyder's iteration of Superman often comes along with Messianic imagery. Its clear, and was before clarification by Snyder, that the use of a spear in Batman v Superman was no different.

While he raises a valid point about the imagery he was going for, it is unlikely to win over critics who will likely just respond that the decision still doesn't "make sense" in a grounded world, even if it fits the movie's themes. Snyder's clarification simply plays into their arguments that the director values style over sense or substance.

What do you think about Snyder's post? What are you thoughts on the religious imagery used throughout Snyder's DC Extended Universe endeavours?

@aflynn - is this site going to post why the movie man on fire had a green tint and why the director chose that color? Good hell, these posts are getting old.

@Cayde6 - You act as if the dude bursted into your home and preached down your throat.

He's not writing these articles. Blame this website for constantly reporting every word he has to say about his comic book films on a personal Vero account that is simply used to discuss with fans. He's not hurting anyone.

@bangarangrufio - You got more to say than my opinionated comment and I'm not out with pitch forks or hurt anyone.

But someone who did dislike a movie I paid for to watch and I can't comment on that subject matter expert because he thinks some fans did not get the point?
I think were aloud to have an opinion too don't you think?

This is something that everyone already knew.

Problem is that Zack Snyder wanted to make a spear for religious symbolism, not Batman. Batman would have made a 100 more effective tools out of that kryptonite, so in context of the story itself it makes no sense. But this is like one of the tiniest of the many problems this move has.

So please, Zack, move on.

Before you go mad.

@danield222 - Also, a decent Batman would have built a grenade launcher that holds more than one grenade. Or a faster way to reload it.

TomSolo - 4/3/2018, 7:12 PM
@danield222 - Then again, a decent Superman wouldn't have walked right into the second grenade.

@TomSolo - And a decent Batman wouldn't have wanted to kill Superman in the first place, because he'd have done his research in the 2(!) years he had and would have realized that Sups (MOS version) is a kinda good guy with some questionable methods (like him).

This movie's a mess.

@TomSolo - lol a decent batman would have made kryptonite bullets and loaded it into the machine guns superman walked into

It's still an exceptionally stupid idea. It could have been a bullet, or aerosolized, or broken down and attached to nanotechnology, all more sensible than a spear. This further shows that the DCEU Batman isn't a tactical genius, and even with Batman's wonderful power of "prep time", couldn't come up with something that was unquestionably a great idea.

Snyder loves dramatic imagery, though.

Also more entertaining to watch.

@MrMediocre - bullets/projectiles have the potential to miss superman.
Putting aside all this Christian symbolism, I think it make perfect sense for Batman to create and Melee weapons
(sword, axe, spear etc) front he Kryptonite.
It would function not only as a weapon against superman but also protection for Batman; he wouldn't be to get close to Bruce without being weakened.

Plus, I do think Batman wanted to kill him face to face. He wanted Clark to know it was a man that killed him.

DSAC294
DSAC294 - 4/3/2018, 7:23 PM
@StormXmen123 - or Superman could just fry him from a distance with his heat vision. The only single advantage Batman ever has against Superman is preplanning in combination with the element of surprise. Melee weapons don’t exactly fit that bill.
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 4/3/2018, 7:35 PM
@DSAC294 - not if batman makes him wear kryptonite sunglasses.

Peronsally I think the whole idea of supermans vs batman is always going to be flawed (unless sueorman is immedatley trapped by a Kryptonite trap = no fight); its an all powerful "god" against a man.

And I feel it always going to be a issue with any fight like such. In the Dark Phoenix comic Jean is shown consuming a sun, yet beast can sneak up on her and place a power dampener on her head.

@Cayde6 - Imagine heating up a kryptonite bat-brand and marking Superman's face as a message to the world.
GreypilgrimXXX
GreypilgrimXXX - 4/3/2018, 10:49 PM
@StormXmen123 - Supes got shot with over a thousand bullets in the initial part of their confrontation. A sensible Batman would have had all of those bullets laced with Kryptonite. The story was stupid and could not avoid being a flawed disaster on screen.
Matador
Matador - 4/4/2018, 4:32 AM
@JamesPunn - Well at least it will be a Bat brand instead of this

You can never be cool if that's branded on your forehead.
MrMediocre
MrMediocre - 4/4/2018, 1:22 PM
@StormXmen123 - Fired from enough of a distance, Superman would think it was just another bullet and take the hit, expecting it to bounce off of him like every other bullet has in his life. He'd have no reason to think he should dodge it.
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 4/4/2018, 5:31 PM
@MrMediocre - again we come to the problem of then there is no fight.

It always going to be the problem when you have an all powerful combatant.

It the reason why Vision just floats about during the airport battle.

And I'm almost certain we will run into the same issue with Thanos and Dark Phoenix. Thanos is in possession of the power stone (yet alone the other stones) whihc has shown to wipe out a planet, and Jean was previously shown to easily destroy the most powerful mutant ever with the Phoenix Force.

Loved BVS even with its flaws.
After watching JL again, it just didn't feel like a direct sequel. Would've loved to have seen Zacks JL take.
