BATMAN v SUPERMAN Director Zack Snyder Reveals The Thought Process Behind The Now Infamous "Martha" Scene

"Why did you say that name?" That's a question which has finally been answered by Zack Snyder, as the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director delves deep into the scene and how it was conceived...

Towards the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Dark Knight is just moments away from delivering a killing blow to the Man of Steel but when the battered hero pleads with him to "save Martha," Bruce Wayne stops in his tracks and demands to know why he would say the name of his own late mother.

In the context of the movie, the scene arguably worked, but that didn't stop fans from ridiculing it and it's now become one of the most highly discussed moments in the DCEU as a result.

Now, director Zack Snyder has revealed how the scene was conceived. "It’s funny, because we, [screenwriter] Chris Terrio and I, we did reach that point in the movie, in our discussions... we knew how to get them to fight, right? But how do you get them to stop fighting?"

"That’s a tough one. And we sort of were just throwing down on their humanity and Batman realizes Superman has humanity, he’s not just a creature, he’s a man — he’s an alien, but he is as human as, in a lot of ways, he’s more human than him, right? He’s sort of embraced all the good parts of the human race, and so Batman’s able to sort of see, in a lot of ways, a thing that he is not. And I think that that was how we started to talk about it."

Snyder went on to reveal that Terrio is the one who actually pointed out that Batman and Superman's mothers share the same name and that is where the idea for the entire thing stemmed from. "That’s kind of how it started, and then we started to talk about how it could work, and if it was Lois (Amy Adams) that said it, maybe it’s better, it’s that kind of thing."

"Look, it’s a mythological construct, I have no problem with that part of it."
The filmmaker then (possibly) joked that they mulled over the idea that "maybe Martha [Wayne] didn’t die, and that she got put into Witness Protection in Kansas. I’m just saying, not like it was possible," he added with a laugh. "Anyway, we can only push it so hard in movies."

Well, Batman and Superman being "brothers" certainly would have been...something. What do you guys think about these remarks? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

@Spagett - ikr, batman can find the good in humanity within a super powered meta human yet he murders all the human villains in the warehouse?

Zack Snyder must be high or wasted all the time. he's as crazy and ADD as brett ratner & michael bay are

what snyder should have done to end the fight was watch daredevil s2:

just let both of them have a chat and establish their moral justice, so the audience can realize how these heroes compare/contrast. many interpreted superman as tired of saving humanity because he's always brooding or looks pissed when saving people. i know civilians are idiots but wtf, superman & batman are suppose to try and find the best in humanity even if they don't like saving them every [frick]ing time.

I think the reason the stopped fighting was actually an interesting idea, the execution was just poorly done. The reason they started fighting, now that was a dumb way

@MalseMarcel - Now the whole movie was just dumb.

@MalseMarcel - Then what if instead of Superman it was a villain who said Martha or displayed subtle signs of humanity? He would have tricked the hell out of Batman, one of the world's smartest heroes (not in this universe tho)

@MalseMarcel - Zach Snyder’s DCEU is all about big ideas that he executed with a thud.
