Clancy Brown Comments On Jesse Eisenberg Playing 'Lex Luthor' In MAN OF STEEL 2

For DC animation fans, Brown is probably more synonymous with Superman's arch nemesis than anyone else, having voiced the character so memorably on many different occasions. Now the Shawshank Redemption actor gives his thoughts on the man who'll play him next in live action, Jesse Eisenberg.

The casting of Jesse Eisenberg in Zack Snyder's Batman VS. Superman themed sequel to Man Of Steel is one of the most polarizing we've had in quite a while. Some feel he's perfect for a modern day take on Lex Luthor, while others feel he lacks a certain...presence to properly portray Supes' most dauntless foe. In an in-depth interview with CBR, the man who's voiced Luthor in various DC animations more than any other actor gives his take on the casting, and reading through his detailed observations you may just come away with a different point of view on this!

"Well, he's a pretty specific actor. He's not a chameleon like [Gene] Hackman or [Kevin] Spacey. He has a similar smugness the way that Spacey does -- that highly-intelligent, super-smug, almost effeminate kind of smugness about him -- but he's way more current. I just watched "Now You See Me," which I thought he was terrific in. He has a really specific persona engrained that is super-smart. You don't necessarily like him, but you don't dislike him. You don't necessarily think he's a good, fun guy -- you see him as a real quirky, weird dude. You don't completely trust him, although he's kind of adorable in his nerdy way.

I think Lex has that. Lex is attractive in all the things that shouldn't be attractive -- or aren't traditionally attractive in comic books -- his intelligence and his ambition and his ego and all the rest of that. Jesse carries that really well. Plus, I hear he's a really nice guy, which helps. It's why I think it shines through, why his attractiveness shines through, because deep down he's a good guy. But he also has this kind of intellectual persona that's unsettling. It's almost reptilian, which is something I think Lex carries with him."

This man is the definitive Lex Luthor for me. He's like Kevin Conroy.

I personally feel Jesse Eisenberg is goin to be the best Lex Luthor on film. I didn't care for Hackman or Spacey. I never believed them as Lex. Eisenberg may not be a physical specimen but his intelligence is what makes him perfect. His smugness shines through in a lot of his work. His portrayal of Zuckerberg clearly got him this job and Now You See Me definitely helped. He can be cold, calculating, quirky, and charming. Like the article says almost effeminate but in a very masculine way.

Dude will kill it.

I still don't like this casting one bit. It's a moot point though as I don't like where the DC movies are headed anyways. Still, if you are excited about the movie at least give it a shot. This kind of film doesn't happen all the time.

I don't know if this point has been addressed yet. I initially didn't care for Eisenberg's casting as Luthor, but I've been giving it some thought. Here you have Eisenberg: not exactly studly, short and skinny, pale and wimpy looking. The most powerful and important man in one of the world's premiere cities. An off-the charts genius. Wealthy and powerful beyond all reckoning. The geeks have inherited the Earth! Then along comes this muscular, ridiculously handsome BMOC football player-type, and THIS guy gets all the adoration? "Why, he looks just like the Neanderthals who gave me a wedgie and locked me in my locker when I was in school! Is it my fault that I was so smart that I skipped several grades and was 5 years younger than my (heh) peers? And now HE is the one everybody cheers and admires? Not if I can do something about it!" If played that way, it could totally make sense. At least, to me.
