Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were both deemed successful at the box office, but the former underperformed and both were slammed by critics upon release. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, has really struck a chord with moviegoers and seemingly points to a shift in tone for the DC Films Universe. That's something both Geoff Johns and Jon Berg acknowledged in a recent interview with Variety when they were asked about the lessons they've learned from those.
"There are lessons from every movie," Berg said. "You would be silly not to analyze how a movie was received — what went right and what went wrong on the making of a movie. On Suicide Squad, the movie did incredibly well commercially. It didn’t work narratively. You had some great casting and some great characterizations, but where the story fell down was on narrative, on plot. We could do better. Batman v. Superman was tonally dark. People didn’t respond to that." You can't argue with that and it's good that Warner Bros. clearly knows they've dropped the ball with Suicide Squad!
As for how these DC Comics adaptations will move forward from here, Johns added: "Wonder Woman celebrated exactly who the character is, but looking at it, it’s not like we should change everything to be about hope and optimism. There’s nothing to change. That’s what these characters are."
It's clear that the plan is now to change how these movies are handled, hence why they seem to have a new mandate to deliver movies which are closer in tone to Wonder Woman than Batman v Superman!
