WB CEO On Difference Between DC And Marvel Movies; "They’re Steeped In Realism...And Edgier"

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara talks here about whether or not he's worried about superhero fatigue as the studio readies itself to unleash a whole slate of DC Comics movies, and weighs in on how the world of Batman and Superman differs to that of Captain America and Iron Man...

Marvel are obviously dominating cinemas right now with the movies, and the next few years will see Fox get in on the action with X-Men: Apocalypse, another Wolverine movie, and spinoffs starring Deadpool and Gambit. Warner Bros. are also hoping to establish their own Cinematic Universe starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad in 2016. Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara isn't worried about moviegoers getting bored with superheroes though, and he had this to say at Wednesday's Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. "The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks very different …you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters." How will they differentiate themselves from Marvel then? "The worlds of DC are very different," he added. "They’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies." Do you agree with that assessment? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

I don't go into reading comics expecting a realistic take.

The same applies to comic book movies

I'm just saying

Watchmen was the only edgy DC movie. And realism doesn't work for CBMs, unless it's Batman.

Fire this ass bag. Comic book movies need to be less realistic fun and have wonder not being edgy and gritty.

I hope that when they do Justice League, they aren't doing a similar plot to Marvel with the superhero team going up against some army. I hope that we get a single big baddie that forces them to work together to defeat him.

If people are invested in the characters they don't care how real it's coming off. DC needs to focus on their characters more and their tone less.

Too funny!!! Nothing about comic book movies are realistic. Thats one of the reasons I love them so much.

The "realistic" actually means grounded. Because MoS is nowhere near realistic at all but i see his point. This genre cant be tired bc charcters and stories are so diverse and they need to show that

What he said:

"They’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies."

How people will read:

"There are no super-powers in the DC Universe because that's not real. Batman actually died in his first mission, by the way. Clark is schizofrenic and all you saw in Man of Steel was his hallucination. That's our realistic take. And the tone is edgier, like, Shazam will commit suicide at some point. That's what I'm saying you know. Jokes? No jokes anywhere, we're firing any screenwriter that writes a little joke in a 200 pages script".
