Margot Robbie In Talks To Star In The BARBIE Movie; WONDER WOMAN Helmer Patty Jenkins May Direct

Well, this came out of nowhere. It seems Mattel have made a deal with Warner Bros. to develop the Barbie movie, and Birds of Prey actress Margot Robbie is in talks to play the character. Check it out...

Despite being in development for years at Sony Pictures, Barbie has found a new home at Warner Bros., and none other than Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, I, Tonya) is in early talks to star.

At one point, Amy Schumer was on board to play the character in what was said to "a contemporary spin with an emphasis on feminism and identity," but the I Feel Pretty actress was forced to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. Last we heard, TDKR's Anne Hathaway was set to replace her, but obviously that's not happening now.

According to THR, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is "circling" the project, but no substantive talks have taken place just yet.

Whether the premise of the movie will stay the same remains to be seen, but since Robbie more closely resembles the classic interpretation of Barbie, there's a good chance the original pitch has been reworked.

Calling it now. The plot of this movie is about a Barbie doll that becomes real in the form of Margot Robbie (not a bad thing at all) and is so confused and bewildered in the real world....

Anyone else have a guess?

@Kyos - Uh, nothing really against Margot, but let's just keep her out of the Marvelverse in case that Dc curse is real. Sony didn't listen and look what happened with Venom. Plenty of hot blonde actresses that can pull off Sue.

They should also get Sebastian Stan as Ken!

The only way this could possibly work is as a satirical comedy or a deconstruction of Barbie as a brand. Like, maybe it can provide commentary on how Barbie has historically been a dumb bimbo with no ambitions and how that clashes with modern women.

@MrMartyMarvel - I mean not really though. Barbie is super ambitious there is a type of Barbie for like every career that exists.

There is a show my niece watched that was actually pretty clever with the history of Barbie and how they live in a plastic world. I was actually taken back by some of the jokes because it's obvious a kid wouldn't have understood the references.

@FearTheLiving - Yeah, but the vast majority of those started in the mid-80's. I believe there was a "College Barbie" or something where one of the phrases the doll says is "Math is hard" or something of the like. Just all in all, I don't think most people think of intelligence when they think of Barbie.

@MrMartyMarvel - Barbie has changed a lot over the years. Even as a kid 20+ years ago I idolized Barbie, not because she was pretty and had nice things but because she made me believe I could be anything. Also, I own almost all the movies and in every single one of them she's a good person, loyal and friendly and helpful to her friends and srangers. I'd say as a mom of a little girl I'd be proud of my girl wants to be Barbie, so no, I don't want them to go that route at all. Barbie isn't the same Barbie from when she started out. the Toys that made us actually has a good episodes about her.

@Supafairy - I see, I can understand that. In the end, all I'm saying is that I don't think this movie will be good or, at the very least, memorable without a creative spin of some sort.

I'm sure it will be one doll of a movie.
