Rumors have been swirling about Henry Cavill potentially returning as Superman for quite a while, and we recently got confirmation that the Man of Steel will have a presence in the upcoming Black Adam movie.
While these sort of big reveals are usually kept under wraps for as long as possible, star Dwayne Johnson has wisely capitalized on the news leaking beforehand, and is now using it to hype the film on the press circuit.
Even so, if you'd rather not know the details of Cavill's involvement, beware of major Black Adam spoilers from this point on.
Supes shows up in the movie's post-credits scene, paying a visit to the Man in Black at the behest of Amanda Waller. The Big Blue Boy-scout tells Adam that it's been "a while since anyone's made the world so nervous," and that they "need to talk."
This is clearly setting up what promises to be an epic battle between these two mega-powerful characters, but it sounds like there are much bigger long-term plans in place.
"It's never been about a one off or just about a fight," producer Hiram Garcia explains to CinemaBlend. "No, it's about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully they're going to clash at some point, but it's not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe."
We recently learned that Warner Bros. Discovery is tentatively planning at least one more solo Superman movie starring Cavill, but it doesn't sound like anything is set in stone just yet. At any rate, setting-up Black Adam vs. Superman as one of the building blocks of the "new DCEU" is certainly not a bad place to start.
Reviews for Black Adam have been mixed, but the movie is still expected to have a pretty good opening weekend at the worldwide box office. Do you guys plan to catch it in theaters when it opens this Friday?
