It's been a long time since we had any official updates on the Black Adam movie, but star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has now taken to social media to announce that the Shazam! spin-off will fly into theaters on 22 December, 2021!

The actor also shared a lengthy statement expressing his love for Superman, the hero he realized he "could never be," and the character he considers to be a darker interpretation of the Man of Steel.

"BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people - but he does it his way. Truth and justice - the BLACK ADAM way."

This obviously confirms that the first live-action incarnation of Black Adam will indeed be a hero (or an antihero, at a stretch), which will be quite the departure from the source material.

Check out some concept art from Jim Lee and Boss Logic below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

The Man in Black ⚡️ Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10yrs old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time - SUPERMAN. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart - I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid - my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM. BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people - but he does it his way. Truth and justice - the BLACK ADAM way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together. BLACK ADAM 12.22.21 ⚡️ Huge thank you to my friends, @jimlee and @bosslogic for this first time ever bad ass collaboration.

I really don't know about this... I guess we'll see how the Shazam audience expectations, the comic character, and the Rock's desires for how his characters are portrayed all come together.

@Chewtoy - Hopefully The Rock can pull it off. Black Adam isn't exactly a simple character and the Rock usually just plays The Rock

"He's a rebellious, one of a kind superhero..."

Superhero?

@BlackBeltJones
He used to be, still is in a way, see DClock for example.

@Doomsday8888 - ou're right.

He's a hero to his people and DClock certainly pushes more of him as such, but I never liked the term superhero attached to Adam. Just me personally. At best anti-hero. When you consider his beginnings, he's more villain. If you want to be nice, he's a man with a very fixed dark morality.

He can turn hero down the line but I think starting out not so much.

@BlackBeltJones
I can roll with that.
He's more of a superhero to HIS people but to everyone else...heh.
It's not easy to write Black Adam, hopefully we'll get something closer to this:

And not some generic villain that wants to...i dunno, rule the world or some shit.

@BlackBeltJones -

Yeah, Teth Adam was called "Mighty Adam" and was the hero of the people in ancient Egypt and Kandahq, and he was an advisor in the court of Prince Khufu, along with the wizard Shazam and Nabu.

His heroism comes in fits and starts. He was at his best when he had his own family around him.

I think the main reason Adam comes to blows with other metas is because he simply uses old world solutions to his problems. That's why he's retreated to his own country.

Damn i thought he was just bullshitting (he tends to do that) but...yeah, he actually described Black Adam pretty well, so i appreciate that.

As for the movie, if those rumors about certain characters making their way in his movie is true then count me the f*ck in!

Alright then, let's do it. Nice promo art. But I hope that he grows his hair so that it resembles Black Adam's one of a kind hairstyle.

@Krav - After the cinematic masterpiece of Holmes and Watson starring Will Ferrell and John C Reily I wouldn’t have thought so but there are so many more stories that need to be explored.

@GoldGuy - are they though? Sure Joker did well but there’s seemingly no real plan. Birds of Prey doesn’t loom great, WW reactions (if they are legit) aren’t great, Superman is nowhere to be found, Flash is in development hell, Cyborg is gone, and while Batman sounds interesting we haven’t seen enough to know how that’s going to turn out. I’d say they are in a worse spot than ever personally
