So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken audiences to Earth, Asgard and all around the Galaxy. The next place on the list is the secluded African nation of Wakanda, rich with vibranium and home to cutting-edge technology.
When audiences are reintroduced to T'Challa, the king of Wakanda, they will be in the midst of viewing a very different type of Marvel movie, according to director Ryan Coogler. The movie will explore many conflicts within, and outside of Wakanda, including T'Challa's personal conflicts. In addition to that, the film will greatly emphasize political conflicts in the fog of war while also feeling very vibrant and energetic, constantly exploring the culture and dynamic of the people in the African nation.
Black Panther will be Ryan Coogler's largest production yet, but also his most personal. Following the comics tradition, Black Panther would be the first major blockbuster superhero movie to headline with people of color leading the cast. Coogler will make sure the film will be epic and exciting, while accurately portraying the fictional African country.
Ryan Coogler offers some insight on T'Challa's character (via Deadline):
“In our film, you find him at a time where he lost his father, the most important person in his life. He’s inheriting this incredible responsibility. He’s inheriting it at a time when Wakanda is struggling what its identity might be and the people have different ideas of what they should do. He’s incredibly conflicted but is aware of his responsibility of what to do."
Black Panther hits theatres February 16, 2018.
