Is BLACK PANTHER Still On Michael Jai White's Radar?

In the past Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) has never been shy about his interest in Black Panther, even going so far as to say that his version would make you forget about Batman. That was a year ago, has his interest waned?

Michael Jai White is no newbie to comic book movies as he starred in Spawn and had a small but scene-stealing role in The Dark Knight as mob boss, Gambol. Over the past few years the actor has lobbied hard for a chance to play T'Challa in a live-action Black Panther film, but now it sounds as though he is losing interest.
CraveOnline: Marvel seems to be calling every African-American actor there is to talk about Black Panther. Are you one of them and do you have any thoughts on approaching that?

Michael Jai White: I have no thoughts whatsoever. Sometimes with Hollywood movies, I’m surprised when they get things right. They come at things from a whole different perspective. I don’t even pretend to know how they think. Who knows what they’re thinking but that’s not on my radar. I would have a discussion but it’s nothing I think about.

If he is losing interest I wouldn't blame him. Going into Comic-Con most fans were hoping to hear that the project was in fact moving forward, but Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito told MTV that there was a hiccup because Wakanda may be too dificult to pull off.
"It's always easier basing it here. For instance, 'Iron Man 3' is rooted right here in Los Angeles and New York. When you bring in other worlds, you're always faced with those difficulties."

Which is an incredibly odd statement by itself, but becomes even more bizarre when you factor that in the very same interview D'Esposito praises Guardians of the Galaxy. A film that will take place in outer space no less and feature an extraterrestrial plant monster (Groot) that eats wood and a talking Raccoon (Rocket). So all of that won't be difficult in the eyes of Marvel, but showcasing a technologically advanced African nation that still holds onto its tribal roots is too far fetched? Smells fishy, I'm going to go chew on some wood.

Kevin Tancharoen directed the wonderful Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series, that starred Michael Jai White as Jax. It was so popular that it helped Kevin land his dream role of directing a Mortal Kombat featured film. We know that Jax is in the film because Kevin tweeted a sample of the script that included the character's name. Although he still hasn't announced if any of the actors from the web series will appear in the movie. But for fans of the web series Michael Jai White has some good news, something to look forward to.
CraveOnline: Is there any more "Mortal Kombat?"

Michael Jai White: Yeah, that’s definitely in the plans for the future.

CraveOnline: Would you be involved in writing the new series?

Michael Jai White: No, that’s Kevin Tancharoen for "Mortal Kombat." He’s a perfectionist and what he’s crafting as far as the script, he’s taking his time to do it right but we’re waiting on another draft. He’s done a couple drafts and he’s just perfecting it.

yea idk was up wit that whole "wakanda is hard to pull off statement" either. Im not gonna lie, I think his statement has something to do with it primarily being a majority African American film and maybe he thinks it might be hard to market or somethin.

I still say he's either gotta play Black Panther or give him a shot to be the new Blade... his incredible martial arts skills used to kill vampires, make it happen Marvel

I think the difficult part is how much budget is this movie going to get? For 150 plus mllion you can get Wakanda and have it look great. But if you wanna go at about 60 million for a character who is a virtual unknown to the public at large. His statement makes sense.

Phase 3 is going to shift back to earth, 2016, black panther. I guarantee it, Wakanda is a really cool setting and combining traditional african stuff with technology would present a pretty cool set.

Too old, and before someone says that RDJ is old too, Downey is a repeat-Oscar nominee. Michael Jai White's movies usually premiere on DVD.

I wouldn't say Marvel is racist but that comment he made about Wakanda would be difficult is odd if not stupid. I want to hear what Feige has to say. After all Feige said they hired someone to write a script for BP.

As far as Michael Jai White playing T'Challa....no thanks. He should focus on a Spawn reboot or something. :)

No, you guys are stupid to make that statement racist. He's saying that making a nation that technologically advanced in the middle of the jungle would a) be difficult and b) expensive.

[frick]. he couldn't have been more clear.

Michael Jai White still looks the same as when did Spawn. The man doesn't seem to age. There's still a couple of actors I'd place in front of MJW to play T'challa (like Chiwetel Ejiofor - who's only 35 I might add. How old was RDJ when he took on Iron Man?). But I think MJW has a certain presence about him that could go toe to toe with RDJ's Tony Stark (not to mention his martial arts knowledge and such). Just my opinion though. And yeah, I think folks are ready for a Black Panther movie.

I'm just not a believer that he could pull off an authentic T'challa.

I'd much rather see Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbage at T'challa, or at least someone with more acting chops than Michael Jai White.

@nailbiter b/c the same company that actually gave us a strong female lead would turn around and be racist, but not sexist? I don't buy it.

you're stating an opinion in an article. if you think his comment is racist put it in editorials and expand on why because it sure as hell isn't news.

they probably don't have a script done. plus, they have to find a jungle location with tax breaks, etc. and you don't even know if perhaps that comment is to stall because BP's part of Phase 3.

it's juvenile to jump straight to the "ZOMFG racism".

As far as Michael Jai White, no just no. Djimoun Hinsou (I think) is the only one for the role. Watch him in Never Back Down and Blood Diamond. Marvel could very easily create a more established hero with him. Instead of introducing only new heroes.

I hate pulling the race card but this does definitely sounds like Marvel is racist!

Afraid of creating new worlds?!? Ummm... WTF was Thor?!? Oh, I'm sorry, I thought Asgard WASN'T on Earth!!!

Anyway, this is stupid. A terrible comment to make; makes no sense. I'd much rather watch a Black Panther movie than a Guardians of the Galaxy film, which I may not even see.

I also don't want Michael Jai White to play T'Chala anyway. We need a young, AFRICAN actor who can actually act. And if he's American he better be able to pull off an African accent. But the movie isn't getting made anyway so this whole paragraph is moot. smh.

Marvel loses points, BIG TIME.
SoFresh
SoFresh - 8/24/2012, 7:35 PM
No, stop picking old [frick]s and rappers for this role, second it won´t happen, Marvel doesn´t believe in a black lead and a majorly black cast, the whole:

"a nation that technologically advanced in the middle of the jungle would a) be difficult and b) expensive."

Is BS, Thor, Avengers...All used incredible locations that were on set, and there are lots of movies in which the majority(if not all) of the action that occurs does so in the jungle and have smaller budgets then the marvel movies.

@lapress
coming from someone whose worked in the film industry, it's called reading between the lines. they can't tell the public everything. there is nothing racist about the comment. he's not saying no BP. hell you could even say he was arguing to set it in New York, much like Black Panther: Man Without Fear was. my point is that there are a lot of ways to take that comment, and racism, imo, was the furthest away.

ATrueHero1987 - 8/24/2012, 7:38 PM
I truly think some of y'all just throw out names for people to play Black Panther. Michael Jai White or Djimoun Hinsou should NOT play T'Challa. Think y'all....

mawilli4 - 8/24/2012, 7:41 PM
if you seriously think he's being racist you're [frick]ing stupid. yes the MAJOR characters are right, because they were ESTABLISHED during a RACIST TIME. GotG is from left field, but sci-fi's big right now, and it seems to be a pet project of Feige.

it's all about relatability for most movie-going audiences. for America, the majority is white. so yes the film industry is racist (due to money).
