THOR: RAGNAROK Star Tom Hiddleston Names BLACK PANTHER's Erik Killmonger As His Favorite MCU Villain

Actor Tom Hiddleston, who portrays recurring Marvel Cinematic Universe villain Loki, has been praising fellow MCU antagonist Erik Killmonger from this year's smash-hit Black Panther. Check it out...

Not only has Ryan Coogler's Black Panther been a staggering success with both audiences and the box office, taking in a worldwide gross of over $1.3 billion dollars and sitting currently at a 96% critic rating on RottenTomatoes, but it has also been a big hit with those inside the MCU family.

Tom Hiddleston, who will reprise his role as Loki for the fifth time in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, was asked by ScreenRant who his favorite villains in the franchise have been and, perhaps unsurprisingly, he had a lot of praise for Black Panther's Erik Killmonger:

SR: Loki’s almost like the torch bearer for the Marvel cinematic villain. What other villains do you like? Who are your top three, besides Loki, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Hiddleston:  I just saw Black Panther like everybody else, months ago. Michael B Jordan as Killmonger, absolutely extraordinary performance, really amazing. And for me specifically, because I felt as an audience member, I could understand his point of view, you know, even though the logic is misguided or that he’s kind of evacuating his anger on to people who don’t deserve it. You could still, you could understand why he was angry and there was a kind of flawed but comprehensible logic in it.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been somewhat criticized for its two-dimensional and lackluster villains, with Hiddleston's Loki being the only real exception to the rule until that is Black Panther gave us Michael B Jordan's Killmonger. Whether Josh Brolin's Thanos will join them as complex and compelling antagonists remains to be seen.

What do you think of Hiddleston's comments? Were you a fan of KIllmonger? Who are some of your favorite villains in the MCU? Leave your thoughts below.

@Skennedy - Great scene between him and Boseman. He was a brilliant strategist nonetheless. He accomplished something no other villain did in the MCU....turn all heroes against one another.

Well, Ultron kind of did that.

And Loki.

There are only two villains that scared me in the MCU. Killmonger and the Winter Solidier.

@Comicbookart - Dude, you know they could've crossed paths....imagine that fight.

@Comicbookart - Like a Winter Soldier flash back to the same hit-job that he shot Natasha through the stomach in, and imagine Killonger as part of her intrnational security detail, and sneaking up on Bucky's sniper vantage point, and the two getting to fighting.

@TheSoulEater - Don't know the exact timeline of the films but Killmonger seems more modern day so I don't know if he would cross paths with Winter Soldier. If there was a fight between them though, Killmonger is intimidating enough to make me believe even in his unpowered state he'd at least give Winter Soldier a few punches, before Winter Soldier stomps him.

As Black Panther/Golden Jaguar tho, Killmonger would stomp Winter Soldier.

Seeing more of him was pretty much the only reason I didnt walk out of the theater. Definitely my favorite MBJ performance, and a top-tier cbm villain.

It is because it is the truth. Killmonger was hand over fist better than any other villain in the MCU. I believe this because he truly was not wrong. Villains that have ideals that the audience can relate to are the best ones. He truly believed he was doing the right thing and was willing to do anything to accomplish his goals. That's one of the most terrifying things in a man when he is willing to kill anyone to accomplish what he believes is right.

@RancidBane -
"he truly was not wrong"

Kilmonger may believe he is in the right, but he was definitely in the wrong. His final goal is to cause a race war by fueling a specific race all over the globe with weapons to take down oppresors. Remembering that the movie clearly establishes his mindset of all leaders falling under the same basket.

He plans on giving Wakandans and Africans weapons to otherthrow the oppresors - which would have just caused more death and racial tensions if he succeeded. His motivation, self-confessed, being the same as his father but relying on a lack of actual experiences demonstrated to us in the movie.

The only good aspect of his plan was the idea of 'Wakanda should use its resources to help people' which is what T'Challa does at the ending of the movie.

Kilmonger represents someone heavily tied to the worse aspects of the past, those who never experienced the attrocities personally yet blame others regardless. He lets the actions of the past consume him. The Museum is an excellent example of this, the past is on display in order for the world to see and learn from it, yet he just is angered by it.

T'Challa meanwhile believes the past is in the past, he acknowledges the mistakes of the past. The movie in particular develops this by building on his relationship with his father and the secrets of the past, while T'challa wants to build a better future.

That is the core dynamic between the characters.
- One is consumed by anger and the past.
- The other has let go of his anger and is trying to improve things for the future.

Thinking back on it, his introduction was very well done.

That introductory shot, along with his wardrobe and demeanor, makes you think he's some kind of "hoodlum", out of place in this high class museum.

The scene intentionally toys with presumptions regarding Killmonger and the tour guide, not immediately revealing which of the pair is in danger, which is the intellectual superior. Part of this tension springs from biases that the museum guide will be inclined to make about a man who dresses like Killmonger.
