Scarlett Johansson Teases BLACK WIDOW's Dark Past In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

"I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life."

Marvel's Avengers: Age  of Ultron opens in US theaters in just a little over two months and if the trailers and other footage released for Joss Whedon's Avengers follow-up is any indication; you can expect to see a lot more of Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Rominoff aka the Black Widow.  Speaking to W Magazine, Johansson discussed why she was attracted to the role of Black Widow and teased what fans can expect to see in Age of Ultron. "People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past. I think of her that way. Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her."

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in US theaters on May 1.

Wondering how dark they'll go. That silver pair of tongs looking thing in the trailer is supposedly used by doctors when a woman is giving birth. Hmmm...

I bet Agent Carter female Assassin Academy is where Black Widow was trained and brain washed into working for Hydra. I wouldn't doubt that she goes double agent.. and Ill keep the rest of my theories to myself.
Cant wait to se this movie!!!

seems like the red room academy becomes darker as times passed...their methods become more extreme. I'm thinking AOU will show Natasha being semi tortured to flow orders during her training. Display how when she was a child, the rigorous and dark methods used to make her a weapon. Maybe the tongs are for so.e kind of mysterious medial procedure

Red hair doesn't suit her. She looks better as a blonde. And her Black Widow is disappointing, wooden, stumpy, and sucks hard. Most don't care because her as.s distracts them.

I love her as Widow. I think she actually does a pretty good job. But the hiney does help.

Truth be told, do y'all feel like Black Widow is being being set up to be some kinda cosmic savior of some sort. She's connected to every MCU brand in some capacity....?

@KurtCrawler To go from Emily Blunt nearly being cast as Widow to a short, wooden, unathletic one who runs funny is a major disappointment.

@TheGambitFreak There was a tray of various surgical tools, but a needle looking instrument was the one that was picked up.

Something that like that would be used to perform a lobotomy. I'm guessing Natasha was breaking free of the Red Room brainwashing her, so they had to erase her memory.

It's really twisted stuff. Her dark story has a happy ending, because she eventually breaks away from Red Room, which is how Hawkeye ended up saving her. Leading to her redemption by working with Nick Fury at S.H.I.E.L.D. to help make the world a safer place.

@slickrickdesigns If Black Widow was brainwashed by HYDRA, she would've been "activated" during CA:TWS, which didn't happen.

She is clean.

She does redeem herself. It's the Marvel Way. Do you feel that that's what makes Marvel more accessible? For them it's the people and what they have to go through and not being the hero.

@GrilledPopcorn +1, one of the worst characters in MCU, was only believable in TWS.

Biggest cringe is when they start to force that unconvincing russian backstory on us, really doesn't work at all.

Should have already replaced BW with Janet and Carol and others, but no..

Still no Black Widow solo movie aye Marvel but Marvel is not too hesitant to just quickly announce a Spider-Man movie which pushes back all the other planned movies such as Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

I love ya Marvel but sometimes you just confuse me.

I want to see a solo movie for Black Widow. Even Whedon has said so. We just have to wait and see what happens.

The archetype of heroes with dark pasts has certain rules.

Her past could come back to haunt her in a big way in CA:Civil War. Lines will be drawn, so Black Widow will have to pick a side.

If she is going to be killed off in Civil War(I'm hoping she is not, because she is one of my favorite characters), I see Black Widow going out a hero, not a villain.

@PymParticle and TWS was scarjo's THIRD try as black widow. i agree, i rather the attention go to Wasp and Captain Marvel in an Avengers movie, both with actual super powers.

and yes to a black widow movie if black widow was going to be emily blunt.

@MightyZeus yeah, it was well played by sony at the cost of other marvel movies like black panther being delayed, what the heck were marvel thinking?!!!!

@pymparticle

Might want to refrain from saying "force on us" because I don't feel anything forced on me. I think you have some pre-conceived notion for black widow that's too strong for your suspension of disbelief. Either that, or you've seen too many scarjo movies and you're type casting her. Her personality in IM2 was 'mundane' but her costume and action scenes were spot on. In Avengers 1 she did a better job as 'fighter' that you could believe didn't want to be apart of any grandiose war. TWS she was perfect, she had the right balance of hero, mystery, fear, conflict and action in her character.

I like Emily Blunt and would imagine she would do a stellar job (perhaps better) but don't disregard that her character did not fill in the volume and depth of the franchise. You needed her character to make the enigmatic SHIELD a contender in a whole of super powers.

ScarJo is actually pretty good. I dug her turn on CA:TWS. The best part for me was how nebulous her past was and how she kept it private. Granted that was her backstory and has no real bearing on her acting ability, but she carries it well.
