While
Black Widow will shed some light on what Natasha Romanoff was up to during the events of
Captain America: Civil War and
Avengers: Infinity War (not to mention her origin story), some fans have questioned if there's really any point to the movie. Well, according to Kevin Feige, we can expect it to show both the latter film and
Avengers: Endgame in a "new light."
"It was about four years ago as we were working on Infinity War and Endgame at the same time, we knew that we wanted to bring her story to a conclusion in the most heroic way possible in Endgame, but also that we wanted to explore a part of her life that we hadn't seen before," he explained.
"It occurred to us that we had seen her adventures in the Avengers movies, but a lot of stuff happened in between those movies that we never saw, we didn't hear about, we didn't learn about. And [with] that, we wanted to do a movie with Scarlett Johansson because she is Natasha Romanoff and not do a story with a younger Black Widow for the whole film."
Reading between the lines, it sounds like we'll follow a younger Black Widow for at least some of the film, which makes sense based on what the trailers have shown. However, it also sounds like the movie will have an impact on the MCU as a whole (
we recently noted that Natasha appeared to be wearing Yelena Belova's vest in
Avengers: Infinity War).
"[We] had this thought of exploring a little bit of her past that we hadn't seen before and how that impacts the adventure she had between Civil War and Infinity War," Feige added. "And in fact, there are things that she does in Infinity War and Endgame that you'll see in a new light once you see the Black Widow."
Black Widow could end up being a far more important movie than it's previously been given credit for based on these remarks, and it will obviously be interesting to see how things play out for Natasha.
