Black Widow is set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but following Natasha Romanoff's death in Avengers: Endgame, most fans are expecting that "Black Widow" mantle to be passed to Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova.
That probably is going to happen (we already know that Pugh will reprise the role in Hawkeye), but during a recent interview with Total Film, Pugh opened up on whether it's a big part of this movie.
"Even though that's obviously where everybody wants to go and wants to think about - to think about what's next - this film never really felt like that was what it was trying to underline," the actress said, indicating that the primary focus of this story is going to be wrapping up Scarlett Johansson's MCU journey.
After all, whatever we see here is bound to influence the sacrifice Natasha made in Endgame.
Talking of Johansson, she heaped plenty of praise of Pugh in the magazine. "She has a really beautiful career ahead of her," the actress said. "She's a very special person." Interestingly, the longtime MCU star even revealed how fans have responded to Yelena in test screenings, saying: "Her character and her performance is so beloved."
It's certainly going to be interesting to see what Marvel Studios has planned for its new Black Widow (assuming that's the way things are heading), and Pugh looks set to have a bright future in the MCU.
Black Widow is set to be released in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, 2021.
