BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson On Why She's Glad A Solo Movie Didn't Happen After IRON MAN 2

In a new interview, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson explains why she's glad a solo movie for Natasha Romanoff didn't happen after Iron Man 2, and how that version would have differed. Check it out...

Scarlett Johansson joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010's Iron Man 2, and that means Black Widow beat the likes of Thor and Captain America to the big screen. Introduced as "Natalie Rushman," her true identity was revealed during the final act when her association with S.H.I.E.L.D. came to light.

Since then, the hero has become a mainstay of The Avengers franchise, and also took on a leading role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

After being killed off in Avengers: Endgame, Natasha returns for a Black Widow solo outing set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. In the Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book (which is now on sale from Titan Books), Johansson opened up about why now is the right time to make a Black Widow movie rather than straight after her MCU debut.

"If we had made a Black Widow standalone back then, it would be such a different film to this one. Natasha's sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame gave me a totally different perspective on who she is," the actress explains. "Before, I don't think I would have been able to show people who Natasha really is, what drives her, and show her emotional core."

"I don't think we'd be able to cut that deep back then. It would have probably been much more of a straight-up spy thriller that maybe would have been a lot flashier in a different kind of way and just scratch the surface of what we do in this movie."

This definitely makes sense, though it would have been fun seeing how a Black Widow movie would have fit into those early Phase 2 or 3 plans. Fans have, after all, been demanding that this become a reality for years now, but we're going to have to wait until next May to watch it all play out.

Feel like this'll get another delay. Don't think the Vaccine will be in enough circulation by May, and it'd be suicide to put this on streaming

@tmp3 - Rumors I've heard floating around the internet is that Disney will announce Black Widow's debut on Disney+ during December 10's stockholder meeting. However a "definitive release day" has not been decided yet. That May release may be like WW84's where it is premiering on BOTH platforms same time.

I understand what she's saying. My worry is that since Iron Man 2 there have been a whole lot of "Not Black Widow" movies and this one may feel reductive. I hope not though.

@Kumkani - she played a good part in winter soldier.

I know that Marvel Studios tries to make things deeper than the average comic book movie, but, in my opinion, this wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing.

Iron Man 2 still had the best look for Widow, in my opinion. The most I would’ve done is made the suit black to change it in sequels

She was the hottest in iron man 2.

DON'T KNOW IF THIS MOVIE WILL DO WELL KNOWING THAT THE CHARACTER IS DEAD. Just sayin'....

@2BOOKOO4U - Knowing how the character will end up doesn't hurt most prequels

@dracula - Most prequels are usually needed to expand the original movies, though.

BW has always been a secondary character to the other guys and knowing her backstory isn’t gonna change anything about the old movies

Well nice to know she was okay with Perlmutter probably screwing her out of her own series and is fine with just setting it up for someone else to take the lead

Hawkeye and Black Widow, the two most shafted Avengers, could have at least thrown in Nick Fury and give the three of them a trilogy

I understand why marvel released the sequels they did in the phase 2 era. But black widow should have happened then.

Yes, I know she was in cap 2 but she didn’t have to be. That film could of had fury, falcon, Carter, and Hawkeye instead. That would have maybe given Carter more of a role with cap which would have worked better in cap 3 where cap should have broken up with her.

@HulkisHorny -

Or this exact film could have been released in phase 3 before she dies!

I don’t get her... like, the straight up spy thriller is exactly what we wanted. Not... just another MCU action movie

I think she's just trying to be a team player, by helping to justify a post-death solo movie. But having this movie come before Infinity War, would've been the more logical decision.

I don't know if BW will be the best BW movie we could've ever gotten (I imagine a second BW movie would be best once her world is established) but she's definitely right that the storytelling foundation of the current MCU and this current version of Marvel Studios is best positioned to deliver a more emotional BW movie

I don't care about Nat's emotional core. I want to see Black Widow do cool spy stuff. I want to see her crashing parties, manipulating powerful men (and women, too!), sneaking into fortresses and stealing top secret data. I want a spy movie, but it sure doesn't sound like that's what we're going to get.
