BARBIE Regains Lead Over BLUE BEETLE At North American Box Office But It's GRAN TURISMO That Races To #1

Blue Beetle has already slipped from the #1 spot at the North American box office, but even with Barbie back in front, Gran Turismo looks set to cross the finish line to end up at the top of the podium.

Gran Turismo was originally supposed to hit the big screen last weekend; instead, Sony Pictures held preview screenings earlier this week, resulting in the racing movie taking the $5.3 million from those and adding it to its opening weekend haul for a $16.5 million debut.

It probably sounds confusing but this is also what studios do when they open a movie on a Wednesday ahead of a big holiday weekend, for example. Warner Bros. isn't happy, though, as it means the PlayStation adaptation has beaten Barbie to the #1 spot.

If those previews weren't counted, then Barbie would be back at the top of the box office with an impressive $15.7 million haul during its sixth weekend in theaters.

When it comes to Blue Beetle, that's slipped to #3 after a $2.6 million Friday which means it's set for a disappointing $10 million weekend (a -60% drop). The hope was that the DC Comics adaptation would have legs, and while its current domestic haul of $43.5 million isn't terrible, it's also far from good.

This is unfortunate for the penultimate DCEU movie because its Rotten Tomatoes score has bounced back in recent days - it sits at 78% after very nearly losing "Certified Fresh" status - and a lot of fans have done their best to rally around the title.

We're still waiting on updated international numbers but, as far as we're currently aware, Blue Beetle has yet to top $100 million.

However, there's a chance all the numbers you see here will look vastly different by Monday morning. Tomorrow is National Cinema Day in the U.S., meaning tickets will cost only $4 each. Will Gran Turismo, Barbie, Blue Beetle, or even Oppenheimer benefit the most? That remains to be seen.

Let us know what you're planning to watch in theaters this weekend down in the comments section!

@Equivocal - I loved Xolo.

And the actor who plays Jenny Kord was really good. Felt her longing for family with just a few subtle looks.

Although I don't think James Gunn's DC slate will make it past the second Batman movie, the ending made me low-key excited for the Booster Gold series.
(Also by the time travel rules laid out in The Flash, Ted Kord sending a message back in time changes the timeline again, so it's like a sneaky second flashpoint)

I saw Gran Turismo: Based on True Story was great. Actually, was a true story the end you will see all the actual people. 5 Stars / 5 Stars.

What a great movie. The racing was top notch. The story is inspiring and enjoyable. Great characters. The racing is so much fun. Definitely worth seeing in theaters.

@AllsGood - It's already a pretty unique approach to a video game movie, but I think it being based on a true story makes it even better.

"...while its current domestic haul of $43.5 million isn't terrible, it's also far from good."

Are you kidding??? $43 million after it's second weekend is abominable! Ten years ago, I could have never dreamed that a DC film could tank this bad. What makes it worse is that James Gunn put his weight behind it, they probably bribed Zack Snyder to make his social media post supporting it. It does not even seem to matter that the audience score appears to be pretty good. The mismanagement of the DC brand has to be the most epic fail in the studios history.

Blue Beetle was pretty good. The superhero stuff is just kinda whatever, but the other stuff works so well that it's easy to look past (also, this might sound like a backhanded compliment, but it's not; it feels SO nice to see one of these movies take place 90% in real locations and sets and only 10% in green-screen bullshit-land, and not the other way around.

I'm really dissapointed at this years showing at the box-office.
Sure Barbie rocked but Renfield and Demeter totally flopped, I need my boy Vlad to have a win

Blue Beetle is the best reviewed DC movie since The Dark Knight!

Oh hold up... no, not anymore. Dropped to 72% a day later.

Blue Beetle has knocked Barbie off the number one spot!

Oh wait, no, Barbie's beaten it a week later and the movie is tracking to be another flop.

*sigh*
Don't worry DC fans. Some day soon we'll get a winner. You'll see! Some day...

@Kadara - Have fun at the wedding and do yourself a favor and watch Turtles (8/10) or Gran Turismo (7/10) instead, they are leagues better than BB (3/10).
