Supposedly, this is the full-plot synopsis of "The First Avenger: Captain America" as published in the latest issue of Production Weekly.

"Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment... Operation: Rebirth."

"After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the 'Super-Soldier Serum' and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers."

Still no word as to who might play the star-spangled patriot, but rumors have abounded, including Matthew McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio and even African American Will Smith. However, nothing has been confirmed. This Marvel movie will be penned by Zak Penn and is looking at a May 6, 2011 release.

Nothing new here. It's basically the origin story.

I know that everyone knows his Red, White, and Blue tights uniform...hopefully they won't use it in this movie.

I hope that since it's WWII that they give him a slightly altered Army Uniform and mask,

Then in the Avengers movie, give him the uniform we know...and hopefully not tights (see character concept in the AVENGERS forum)

I never got why in world war two theyd inject him with super soldier serum then just give him a shield and no guns. Shields were pretty outdated, give the dude a tank or something, just making it more difficult for him than it had to be.

Because the super soldier serum is THAT powerful. He's got superhuman reflexes now, so he can move fast enough to get the shield (made of alien technology according to the Ultimates, not sure about the classics though) where he can block the bullets, but he's still not fast enough to dodge them. (It makes it interesting, and not an imitation of the Matrix, lol)

And he doesn't need guns, a lot of his missions out of the battlefield (which he wasn't on much) were kind of recon missions. so he was to sneak intellegence, and if he did his job right, there'd be no need for violence.

as for making it more difficult, that's the point. It wouldn't be as interesting if he didn't have a challenge. Stan Lee once said something about spider-man that can be taken to EVERY comic out there. (This is not a DIRECT quote, but a paraphrasing) "If you make the hero a lot better than the bad guy it's no fun cuz there's no competition. You have to make the Bad guy better so that the hero has something really challenging, making the reader want to cheer him on in his underdog situation."

I think they need to give Cap a gun tho. He's a soldier in the most devastating war in history, to soften it up would be dumb. I'm pretty sure he did use guns initially and he definitely used them in Ultimates. As a matter of fact, Cappo is one blood-thirsty mamma jamma in Ultimates...he's offed a LOT of baddies. I borderline dislike this interpretation. He comes across like Frank Miller's take on Batman in The Dark Knight. I gotta say also that Matthew McConeghey is not an ideal choice to play Captain America cause he's nearing 40, and Cap has been suggested to be in his late 20's. The suit will need some work too, prolly like it was in Ultimates. The first Cap movie was pretty damn bad. Still worth checking out tho!

I think it's great that they're telling his origin from WWII instead of re-working it or telling it in flashback.

For the record, Cap was known to use guns during some of his adventures from the '40's and Marvel even shows him using guns when telling stories from the time period.

I think they'll probably go the "Ultimates" route and give him a modified military/Cap uniform.

I know that his sheild wasn't always supposed to have been alien technology, at one point in the comics it was made by Tony Stark (Iron Man). Also, as for Cap carrying a gun - the most recent comics have him carrying one. For anyone who doesn't know, Steve Rogers (Captain America), was killed during Marvel's Civil War. His earlier sidekick, Bucky (Winter Soldier), took up Cap's uniform (though slightly altered) and now carries a gun.

cap carrying a gun is stupid because the serum is what him superhuman yes it was the biggest war we have and yes they had guns but he didn't need one...if they make him with a gun then what sets him apart from the other guys?....it would be a boring comic i would think if he had a gun that's just me

Captain America's shield originally was an accidental combination of Vibranium and Adamantium. This was accomplished by some scientist by accident and cannot be replicated. The Vibranium in the shield is what absorbs the impacts directed against it. The reason Cap can throw it this way is due to balancing discs that equal out the weight (and his skill). The ones made by other means will all eventually break. Cap's shield did break during the original Secret War. Cap was able to repair it though.

Definitely makes sense not to use guns. He is essentially a mutant Super Soldier. His whole body is a weapon. I see him as a master of stealth as well as evasive and defensive hand to hand combat. If they use guns its OK too. Even Batman had a gun back in the earlier issues. Keep the costume, just mute the colors down a bit.
Definitely not Matthew McConeghey. Would prefer Aaron Eckhart, if they can't find a worthy unknown.

id rarther the story be told in a band of brothers/saving pvt ryan way rarther than over the top Indiana Jones method.
If they stick to the ultimates, and throw in classic cap story arcs, this has the potential to be a great film.

Cap was a soldier, he always has been. When he first started out, Cap carried a tommy gun and wore an army helmet. In modern times, he shouldn't carry a gun on the streets, but on the battlefield of WWII, he would be retarded not to. WWII Cap has a gun, it is plain and simple.

One thing that I think is key to the success of all of the Marvel films upcoming (except for Thor and you'll see why in a minute) is that Iron Man & the Incredible Hulk changed the game for superhero films. Along with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Robert Downey and Edward Norton represent a fundamental shift in approach to casting these films. These are AAA actors at the top of their game we are talking about here playing our cherished heroes, and now we are talking about Cap. With Thor or Spiderman you can have relative unknowns play their parts, since Thor is so mysterious and Spidey's an everyday all-American kid (Peter Parker could literally be anybody). But with Cap, you are talking about not just being able to stand with Iron Man or the Hulk, but also an actor worthy of standing with Robert Downey Jr. and Edward Norton. This is exactly why Will Smith's name has been brought up, not because of his race, but his standing as an actor worthy of screen time with Downey Jr. & Norton, not to mention his Box Office clout. The days of relative unknowns always portraying these icons is over, and for that itself Marvel has made an amazing achievement. That's why they are talking Dicaprio, Matt Damon, McConaughey, etc. I like Mark Valley and especially Aaron Eckhart, though I cede the age factor. Can you imagine Downey Jr., Sam Jackson, Eckhart, and Norton on the screen at the same time for the Avengers? It would be like the scenes in Dark Knight with Christian Bale, Eckhart, and the brilliant Gary Oldman all together at the same time. Prime time actors making history. So all of those factors make casting Cap in 2009 A LOT TRICKIER than anytime in the past...

P.S.: I like the idea of leaning more towards Ultimates Cap for the WWII First Avenger storyline. Gritty war melodrama, Cap with guns blazing (they were onto something in the beginning of the Incredible Hulk with Tim Roth's super soldier, until it all became about him topping the Hulk) and glaringly old-fashioned & politically incorrect ending up frozen at the end of the First Avenger only to be jarringly awakened into 2010 America in the Avengers. Can you imagine an opening scene of the Avengers where the first face a now unfrozen Cap sees in this strange new world is Downey Jr.'s, which freaks him out because he looks so much like Howard Stark, the man who designed his shield? Cannot wait....

You know...I just wish that Randy Couture was a good actor...He has the perfect physique and look of Captain America. I am also interested in who Thor will end up being, as that will be a very entertaining movie as well, if they stick to the basics, and bring it into the here and now.

What is everyone's opinion on Couture as CA?
