Chris Evans Says CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Is His "Personal Favorite Marvel Movie"

More from Chris Evans' appearance at Emerald City Comic-Con here, and the former Sentinel of Liberty has revealed that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is his favorite Marvel Studios movie...

Earlier today, we brought you some quotes from Chris Evans' recent appearance at Emerald City Comic-Con, and we now have a more detailed breakdown of his take on the current state of comic book movies (via Variety).

“Comic book movies in general, for whatever reason, don’t always get the credit I think they deserve,” the former Captain America actor told the audience. “They are these big, giant movies. There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones. I’m not throwing shade! I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough. More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier. I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalogue but some of them are phenomenal. Like independently, objectively great movies, and I think they deserve a little more credit.”

Evans didn't name any specific comic book movies he felt missed the mark, but he did mention that 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier was his "personal favorite" Marvel Studios film that he appeared in.

“It’s my personal favorite Marvel movie that I was a part of. It’s not just for the movie itself but the experience,” he said. “The first film, I was so nervous. You know what you’re stepping into and as a result you’re playing defense and you’re playing not to lose. When ‘Winter Solider’ came around, we were playing to win. And it’s the first movie with the Russo Brothers. We were taking more risks, and the character felt more fleshed out. It was one of the more satisfying experiences I’ve had in my Marvel run.”

This won't exactly be seen as a hot take, as The Winter Soldier would likely be among many fans' picks for one of the best MCU movies (if not superhero movies full stop).

Rumors persists that Evans is set to reprise the role of Steve Rogers in Avengers: Secret Wars, but despite a trade report claiming to have confirmed his return last year, the actor's responses in interviews tell a different story.

“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply,” Evans said when asked about potentially returning as Cap during last year's C2E2. “He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories to tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it … it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way. I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and, in a way, it really landed so well.”

Of course, there's a new Sentinel of Liberty in the MCU now, with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking up the mantle in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ series. This doesn't mean Evans couldn't pop up for a cameo, but we can't see him returning to the role in a regular capacity. That said, there are other superhero aliases Rogers could go by!

Winter Soldier is still in the top 10 of MCU movies.

Of course, I can't put it in context off the top of my head, but my immediate thought is top 5.

@Order66 - top 10 CBM’s too.

My list: (bonus 5)

15. Shang-Chi
14. Black Panther
13. Captain America Civil War
12. Batman’89
11. GOTG
10. Deadpool
9. The Batman
8. Iron Man
7. Spider-Man 2
6. Logan
5. Superman’78
4. Cap Winter Soldier
3. Avengers Infinity War
2. Avengers Endgame
1. TDK

I only rate Endgame higher than IW because just the pay off of it all coming together in the Portals scene. And TDK being no. 1 is purely because it changed the genre.

In my opinion, the winter soldier is still the best Marvel movie to this day. Perhaps the best superhero movie in general 🤔
PartyKiller

@Izaizaiza - The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Spider-Man 2, Days of Future Past and Spider-Man are all better than The Winter Soldier. But The Winter Soldier is probably the best MCU movie.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/4/2024, 1:54 PM
@PartyKiller - All great films, but I would argue that the winter soldier is better than all of them. In my opinion, of the films you listed Spider-Man 2 and the dark Knight are the two best. Spider-Man 2 and the winner soldier are both wildly entertaining films that never stop being a character accurate comic book romp. I would put the winter soldier above Spider-Man 2 because the political commentary it makes is so smart without stepping out of the comic book sandbox.

The dark Knight also makes smart political commentary, and is also wildly entertaining with some of the best action sequences of any comic book film. Ledger's performances of course amazing. The thing that edges out the winter soldier for me over the dark night is that Evan's character felt like Captain America. Bale never (and I realize this is a hot take) Bale never felt like Batman to me. I felt like he looked ridiculous in the cowl, and I never believed him as being tough. Further, he wasn't written to be exceptionally smart.

It's all opinion, of course. But those are my thoughts

Which of those are the most entertaining with repeated viewing. That's my yardstick. I have watched the Batman films over and over with Begins being my personal favorite. SM2not as much but Winter Soldier is just entertaining throughout and has such an emotional impact along with everything else that it wins out for me. Of course Endgame is a masterpiece but that is in it's own league.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 3/4/2024, 3:35 PM
@Goldboink - For me a great genre movie has to be like Escape From NY. You know how it plays out but every time you watch it is still has drama, as if this time it might end differently.

James Cameron does that sort of suspense building in his movies. We had it in The Empire Strikes Back, Jaws, and Nolan did it maybe better than all other movies in TDK. TWS had suspense but it seemed to break well before the end when Cap found out who Winter Soldier is. Then it shifted to 'Can Steve redeem Bucky?' which seemed more likely than unlikely so it didn't build much tension.

Infinity War and Endgame for me were not big deals because of the snap and screwing with time. Those things always cheapen everything. People still expect Stark to return because of it and he no doubt will. So the death was weakened then and will be destroyed later. Even if it's another Stark. When I watched Marvel movies the first time, it never felt like the villains might win and they don't feel that way on rewatches.

They are different animals, TWS and TDK. It's a matter of taste. I'm not thrilled with the mucking about with time and multiverses personally but I'm not making those decisions and they do happen in the comics so what are you going to do.

Years ago I read Tai Pan, which is a masterpiece. I was getting to the end of the book, last few pages, and the main drama was yet to be resolved. He did it on the very last sentence. It's so hard to build that tension and then resolve it satisfactorily at the very end and few movies or stories manage to pull it off.

KennKathleen - 3/4/2024, 7:11 PM
@Izaizaiza - Great debate! While Captain America in TWS embodied the Superhero, Ledgers Joker is the greatest comic to film character. He redefined, elevated, and still kept the spirit of one of the greatest fictional characters created...
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/4/2024, 8:44 PM
@KennKathleen - That's an interesting angle! My initial instinct is to agree. I can't think of anybody who both captured an elevated character like ledger did. I'd have to think on that for a bit
Vigor
Vigor - 3/4/2024, 1:45 PM
I think most can agree winter soldier stands confidently as the best content disney marvel have put out. It stands on its own as a good movie, and it's one of the best comic book movies of all time.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 3/4/2024, 1:46 PM
If they had just really killed Nick Fury. It would have made it a greater movie. Instead they opted for a death-fakeout. Death-fakeouts happen in movies to trick you into thinking something big happened when it didn't. They usually happen at the end though.
JonC
JonC - 3/4/2024, 2:04 PM
@PartyKiller - its crazy in the genre of a superhero movie we can't allow a death fakeout when we can have inter-dimensional travel and turn scrawny weaklings into monsters...
HulkisHoly
HulkisHoly - 3/4/2024, 6:14 PM
@PartyKiller -

I agree. They should have killed Fury because his character was quickly ruined after that film. That was peak Fury. He only got worse with each appearance and then that abominable backstory of his getting scratch by a cat in Captain Marbrl was unforgivable.

@ATrueHero1987 - Marvel has a long history of hiring talent with great potential, but not experienced. It worked well for a while, but more recently it hasn't. I don't think it has to do with the talent as much as the support structure strained by the increase in volume and dealing with massive disruptions in the process from the pandemic.

It should have been the standard for marvel films going forward but no, they decided to lean more towards the bad Comedy and started letting the wrong type of people into the writer's room.

Same, one of the few cbm movies that could pass as a tip notch espionage thriller if they had different names. There's maybe 5 cbm's that are really really good, the rest is content or safe sequels

@bobevanz - my mom saw a clip of the nick fury highway chase scene and posted on Facebook "what is this movie? Looks great!"

I of course responded that it's a comic book film called captain america 2. And she could not believe it. But of course that still didn't get her into cbms haha

The Russo Brothers blindsided us with this. They were easily some of the best writers and directors on that show.

Hard to argue with that Cap 2 is fvkin awesome. Although Civil War wasn't exactly terrible either!
