In yet another segment from Total Film's visit to the set of Marvel's much-anticipated Captain America: The First Avenger film, director Joe Johnston recalled finding a leading man, and eventually seeing 'Steve Rogers' in actor Chris Evans. The actor himself also reminisces coming on board, as well reiterates his self-doubt. And with Johnston also revealing Evans' reaction after seeing a final cut, read on below.

"We had some artwork and we took Chris and put him in the outfit without him knowing it, just to see how great he would look," remembers Johnston. He and the producers considered a multitude of other actors, but none had "that spark." I don't think we even screentested Chris once we found him and convinced him that this would be the movie to do."

"Nobody in my life said don't do it," Evans reveals. "Everybody was like,'Are you an idiot? Do this!' I started thinking,'Maybe I'm just saying no because I'm scared? Maybe the right thing to do it no matter what happens? If the movie's great, you handle the obstacles. If the movie's bad, you handle the obstacles. That'll give you more character than ever,'"

And most recently, a couple of months after TF's set visit, they caught up with Joe Johnston as he was applying finishing touches. And there he reveals Chris has seen the film, as well his initial reaction to it.

"He loved it!" Johnston smiles. "Texted me in the middle of the night saying, 'Thank you for making something I can be proud of.'"

And it seems Evans isn't the only one liking what he saw, with Variety's Jeff Sneider reporting, "Hearing that those who saw CAPTAIN AMERICA today were very impressed & feel it might even be better than the 1st IRON MAN. Fingers crossed! What do you think?

Captain America: The First Avenger focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, the film releases July 22, 2011.

That sounds truly genuine and like something Chris would say from the heart. Evans has made it clear that he's put up with a lot of crap, so that response sounds authentic.

Hey genesis609, did you agree with the critics on what was wrong with GL, or did you find something else you didn't like?

@Shocker- Just saw Green Lantern. It really isn't as bad as everyone says. I quite enjoyed it, actually. It wasn't AMAZING, but it was good- everyone just needs to back off it.

@Shocker i just saw GL as well and just like JJcap11 said it really isn't that bad. take it for what it is, escapism. it's way better than Johna Hex or Catwoman but nowhere near the level of Batman Begins. it's a good middle ground movie i thought, that's about on par with Superman Returns. only with more action.

I've come a long way in accepting the horrible casting that is Chris Evans as Captain America. Then I read this pretentious bullshit and it irks me all over again.

"We had some artwork and we took Chris and put him in the outfit without him knowing it, just to see how great he would look,"

Not how he would look but, how GREAT he would look. Either they can see the future, or they're full of shit. He looked "great" BEFORE seeing him in the suit? And how do you use artwork to put Evans in the suit without him knowing?

"the producers considered a multitude of other actors, but none had that spark."

A "multitude" of actors? Channing Tatum, some dudes from the WB network and an actor rejected for Cap but bumped to Bucky. Sloppy and lazy casting and [frick] you for LYING. Evans was cheap and was the lesser of two evils between him and Tatum, who unbelievably, I think would have made a better Cap. Channing, [frick]ing , Tatum! That's how wrong Evans is, or was. I have since accepted it and I'm rooting for the movie to succeed for the greater good; The Avengers. But hearing these douches fluff it is insulting. Evans was convenient, not a perfect choice.

Funny, Tatum actually looks more like Steve Rogers and his stiff, long stare acting fits Captain America and his nearly comedic patriotism.

One area I think Evans outshines other actors they tested and i agree with the spark comment is Evans could portray "skinny Steve" and take the character of Steve Rogers so much further than the one trick poney of Channing Tatum, Tatum is too dry and tough guyish to pull off Steve Rogers and that is what makes Cap so genuine and appealing is deep down inside of that great man with morals and integrity is a skinny kid from Brooklyn who got beat up and picked on. Evans will pull that off and not many other younger actors with the physical build and all American Cap look could have.

as much as i to have accepted chris even i think this intervieuw is full of it!

Lets all be real it was a money issue! tatum would have been a better cap all the way but for me Mark Valley all the way i know i know he looks old but make no mistake, he is steve rogers as we would like to see him now in the comics.

I don't give a shit what the issue with Evans is. Fact is he proved in Sunshine that he COULD act circles around ANY contender for the [frick]ing role. Channing Taters??? Put down the meth!!! He has yet to prove ONCE that he deserves being on the big screen, let alone be Captain America. Hell, i was rootin' and tootin' for Jensen Ackles to get it (good lord did i ever campaign my ass off) and i STILL think to this day that Marvel made a GREAT casting decision. Maybe not the one we would have all wanted in our dreams but GREAT none the less. The trailers are more than enough proof that he's pulling it off in spades.

Honestly, anyone who can suggest Tatum would be the better actor for most any role is someone I don't want casting a film.

@Neo, Channing Tatum would hve been a better Cap? Psh. That's almost as bad as saying John Cena would hae made a better Cap. I can understand the feeling that Evans isn't perfect for the role, but objectively, he looks the role and has the voice for it, which is petty much all we can judge so far. Until you've seen the movie why don't you just treat it like he's an uknown actor who might just do a great job?

@MTL - They didn't say they picked him because of his Johnny Storm, but they knew him "personally" because of that role.

@EVERYONE BAGGING ON BAGGINS -

Go easy on NEO, he's only seen Chris Evans in Not Another Teen Movie and the FF4 movies. So naturally he thinks thats the only character he can act as. BELIEVE ME, I've been many arguments with him. He can NOT be reasoned with on this.

But he also did say he wanted that WOODEN LOG of an ACTOR to play the most IMPORTANT part of the Avengers. Sooooo I'm not sure he deserves anyone's liniency.

Truth is: Chris Evans IS Cap. now, there's no turnining back, so all those comments that say, who
could've-should've-would've
can go suck oranges, the fact is Cap. America is almost here with Chris Evans in the title role, whether you like it or not.
I can't wait for the second trailer and I'm almost confident that the movie will be GOOD !!!!

Hell yeah! Evans will be amazing. Haters can wet dream themselves into oblivion about what could have/should have been. In the meantime, Evans will kick a$$ and dominate in the box office.

Marvel studios has been doing incredible casting with their movies so far.

Robert Downey Jr owns Ironman
Cris Hemsworth owned Thor

Loki, Iron Monger, Whiplash, and Hawkeye are all on point. People might not like using Ultimate Nick Fury but he was made with Samuel L Jackson as a template. ScarJo is a lousy choice for Black Widow (ill give you that one).
What makes you think Evans will not own Captian America? He works hard and looks deeply into charactor and mythology before he takes roles. Any interview he takes you can tell he cares about being the best Steve Rogers he can be. Dont get confused with him saying this is a stepping stone to directing with not caring about acting. Ive enjoyed all of his roles to date because he understands what the movie hes making should be and feel like.

WAIT FOR THE MOVIE SO ALL THE NON BELIEVERS CAN SUCK IT!!!

I have high hopes for this. It's looks and feels like a perfect peiord adventure movie. The ox office probably will be similar to Thor, but at least it didn't cost $300 million like some CBM's!
