In yet another segment from
Total Film's visit to the set of Marvel's much-anticipated
Captain America: The First Avenger film, director Joe Johnston recalled finding a leading man, and eventually seeing 'Steve Rogers' in actor Chris Evans. The actor himself also reminisces coming on board, as well reiterates his self-doubt. And with Johnston also revealing Evans' reaction after seeing a final cut, read on below.

"We had some artwork and we took Chris and put him in the outfit without him knowing it, just to see how great he would look," remembers Johnston. He and the producers considered a multitude of other actors, but none had "that spark." I don't think we even screentested Chris once we found him and convinced him that this would be the movie to do."
"Nobody in my life said don't do it," Evans reveals. "Everybody was like,'Are you an idiot? Do this!' I started thinking,'Maybe I'm just saying no because I'm scared? Maybe the right thing to do it no matter what happens? If the movie's great, you handle the obstacles. If the movie's bad, you handle the obstacles. That'll give you more character than ever,'"
And most recently, a couple of months after
TF's set visit, they caught up with Joe Johnston as he was applying finishing touches. And there he reveals Chris has seen the film, as well his initial reaction to it.
"He loved it!" Johnston smiles. "Texted me in the middle of the night saying, 'Thank you for making something I can be proud of.'"
And it seems Evans isn't the only one liking what he saw, with Variety's Jeff Sneider
reporting,
"Hearing that those who saw CAPTAIN AMERICA today were very impressed & feel it might even be better than the 1st IRON MAN. Fingers crossed! What do you think?
