EDITORIAL: Theory On How The Foundation for Captain America 3 Has Already Been Laid Out

It has been made official that Marvel is doing a third Captain America movie. It is my theory, however, that the plot for this movie already has a foundation based on the Batman and Iron Man trilogy.

The other night I was watching Batman Begins for the umpteenth time when I had an epiphany. The Batman and Iron Man trilogy has one very important plot point in common, and based on Captain America: The First Avenger the other two Captain America movies may have a similar pattern.

The plot point I speak of is that in Batman Begins, Iron Man, and Captain America: The First Avenger, the titular characters all are born to fight an evil organization led by their worst enemies. For Batman there's Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows, who first trained Bruce Wayne, but then became his worst enemy once he realized that they wanted to destroy Gotham. Then there's Tony Stark who was captured by the terrorist organization known as the Ten Rings led at the time by Raza, who may have just been a figurehead working for the Mandarin. Finally, there's the Red Skull and HYDRA, who is the primary reason that Steve signed up for the Super-Soldier program and became Captain America.

Now in those three movies Batman, Iron Man, and Captain America seemed to have destroyed those three organizations after defeating the villains who led them. Therefore, in Iron Man 2 and The Dark Knight those organizations were nowhere to be seen as Batman and Iron Man took on Joker and Whiplash respectively, who had no ties to the Ten Rings or the League of Shadows, but were their own brand of monster. I have a feeling that even though it is speculated that Alexander Pierce is the Red Skull or Baron Zemo in disguise this will not be revealed until the post-credits scene. This would then make the Winter Soldier his own monster, and those working with him seem like rogue SHIELD agents.

Finally, there's The Dark Knight Rises and Iron Man 3. In these two movies the Ten Rings and the League of Shadows came back to battle Batman and Iron Man in an even bigger way. Also this time there were fresh faces to lead those two organizations in the forms of Bane and Trevor Slattery/the Mandarin. I believe that in Captain America 3 the plot will be similar with HYDRA coming out of the ashes of the seemingly destroyed SHIELD as a bigger threat to Captain America than they were in the 1940s. Also if TDKR and Iron Man 3 are any indication there will be a new leader of HYDRA either in the form of Baron Zemo, or possibly Baron Strucker will return after his appearance in Avenger: Age of Ultron. However, if Alexander Pierce is not already Baron Zemo then I believe that his leadership will be temporary because he will have only been a figurehead for the returned Red Skull. Now it is my hope that the Red Skull, Baron Strucker, and Baron Zemo each lead their own army of HYDRA soldiers as they invade different areas around the globe in order to try and start World War III. This would lead to an epic final battle, and a epic grand finale for the Captain America trilogy if this is where Marvel decides to end this series. A battle like this could possibly be so huge that other Avengers members like Hulk or Iron Man or Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch could get involved as well.

I know this theory may sound crazy to some and sane to others. Feel free to either tell me off or agree with me in the comments section below.

Great points and a very interesting read. My one suggestion would be to add a picture or two.

Seems plausible, I don't think it will be exactly like you say but trilogies usually return to the first film in part three.

hmm... other than the fact that you mentioned TDKT and the Iron Man movies together as if the two are of the same caliber, which I don't think so and I would find you and kill you because of that, great theory.

Nah just kidding, I would not kill you on this.

I still say Red Skull won't return in the Cap trilogy. It'll just be Hydra with Zemo and maybe Madame Hydra as the villains. The twist in Cap 2 guaranteed is that Alexander Pierce is actually been working under cover for Hydra for years. Making him turn out to be Red Skull would be dumb and ridiculous.

Not a bad theory but, I don't believe Red Skull will return.

I hope that this trilogy formula is done away with soon, comic book movies are not really constructed to be trilogies but rather ongoing sagas. Each sequel should push the narrative forward rather than backpedal to try and make everything connected and close some sort character loop,

@EdgyOutsider: One can dream though. He is after all my favorite villain in both the movie and the comics. I agree with you that he probably won't return as a villain since he was not as well-liked as Loki in the MCU.
@Baron Zemo: Me and you both. However, if he does I don't think he will look like he does in the comics. I don't think that pink suit will be well received by formulas.
@SuperiorMrGod: Any suggestions on pictures you would like to see?

@dethpillow: I am greatly interested in what you have to say about the Red Skull.

@vandinejd: It's not that he's not as well liked (which he isn't as well liked) but, there is no point to bring him back and as I said, Redford revealed to be Skull is dumb. The twist is that he's been secretly working for Hydra undercover, guarantee it. Cut off one head, two more shall take its place. Hail Hydra! Hydra lives beyond Red Skull. The villains should be Baron Zemo and Madame Hydra, maybe Crossbones. Fingers crossed he comes back for Cap 3. My picks for them are Sharlto Copely and Emily Blunt. It should be all out war. It still makes it personal for the villains and Cap, brings it to full closure in a satisfying way. He "retires" until Avengers 3 where Thanos coming to earth with the Infnity Gauntlet looking for the last infinity stone, this causes him to suit up and take leadership one last time. That's just what I would like. Crossbones is my favorite Cap villain by the way for some useless information. Just like how I would like Thor 3 to be a personal war with Loki and war among the realms with Surtur. Thor comes back in Avengers 3 because Thanos closed ties with Loki by killing him in Thor 3 for failing him during The Avengers. No Beta Ray Bill, Enchantress and Executioner.

What if Steve dies and Bucky takes his place as Captain America? They could use Steve in back stories to keep Chris Evans contract alive. Just a thought

@hawknight: If Steve is to die in any movie I hope it is in Avengers 3 so that if Marvel decides to continue the MCU after then Bucky's Cap will have his own Cap and Avengers trilogy.
