Is Chris Pine in the Running for Captain America?

CinemaSpy reports that Chris Pine is the front runner for the role, according to yet another unnamed source.

Another website has jumped on the Captain America rumored-casting bandwagon. Today, CinemaSpy disclosed that they received an email from a source claiming to be well-connected within the Paramount hierarchy. The email states:

Anyway, just thought you guys might like to know that Paramount and Marvel are pretty close to closing a deal on casting Steve Rogers/Captain America and fans might be excited to learn that the short list includes somebody a lot of fans speculated about, Chris Pine. From what I'm hearing, he's the frontrunner right now, though that could change. Can't tell you who the other couple of choices are, cause that'll work against me for reasons I don't want to get into.

Anyway, hope this is helpful, feel free to do what you want with it.

The guys (and gals) over at CinemaSpy are taking this intel with more than a few grains of salt. They've even said their first thoughts over getting this information were A) "Why are you telling anyone this?" & B) "Why are you telling us this?"

While they were hesitant to post this information, they have pointed out a few things that would make Pine fit the role. There's a big window in Pine's film schedule until 2012, he is of the right age and look (granted, someone weightlifting) and he has enough solid film experience to merit this kind of role.

CinemaSpy has asked their readers to sound off whether they believe this news or not. Since CBM.com has a world-renown Bullsh!t Meter that always seems to be pinging around these articles, why don't we lend them a hand:

Can I fist ya?

No, please no..not him. If he s picked, it will simply be because of the success of Star Trek, not because he is the best actor and personality for the part. It's a shame Mark Valley's not being seriously considered. He would be great (a bit old, yes, but great nonetheless) for the part!

Not a horrible choice but he's Captain Kirk. When people see him that's the first thing they'll think. That will work against the movie. Hire a actor that the audience will see Steve Rogers when they look at the screen and not some other character the actor is famous for.

usclerkguy - 2/12/2010, 7:13 AM
This is WAY WAY WAY more believable than that sad "unholy trinity" of crap actors (Jenny Ackles, somethin somethin Murray, and McPartlin) that were "rumored" to be the top 3 choices. If they go with a relative "unknown", TEDDY SEARS fits the bill! Oh well, we'll all know in a few weeks!

"Paramount and Marvel are pretty close to closing a deal on casting Steve Rogers/Captain America"

That's the line that looks suspicious to me. What does Paramount have to do with casting? I know Marvel have a distribution deal with them, but afaik they don't have any say about casting...

I might be wrong, but I would have thought that the casting of Cap would be solely down to Marvel.

I have suspected this all along. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if it turned out to be entirely true.

The jury's still out on whether or not that would be a good thing. I haven't decided.

@ ManhuntersBastardChild

Because he's old. Because he's old. Because he's old. Because he's old. Because he's old. Because he's old.
Because he's old. Because he's old. Because he's old.

The wrinkles in Mark Valley's face are deep like a knife cut. Captain America is:

Young. Young. Young. Young. Young. Young. Young. Young.

Who in their right mind would consider casting an actor pushing 50 to play the role of someone whose early to mid 20's?

I just watched that movie "Carriers" starring this guy. He's a pretty good actor as far as being the "intense borderline douche" type. "more" "quotes".

Good point. I wouldnt be pissed if he got the role. He's way better than most of the people that members here want to see in the role....

IsaiahBradley
IsaiahBradley - 2/12/2010, 7:41 AM
@ teabag

LOL... He has the look that hero's used to have. Big booty chins, large heads. You know, the Mr. Incredible look. You wouldnt cast Superman or Batman with someone with that look(unless you where making the movie back in 1960) so why would you do it to Capt. It's so throwback and outdated. Hero's look like us now. Not like Dudley Doright.

Please dead that Mark Valley for Captain talk.

Not too bad, I like him, if true, he is a way better fit than Tobey Maquire is for Spider-man.

I do not care he is already kirk. But no, thanks. He can't wear a beard in the movie to hide the scars of smallpox on the cheeks, neck and chin :-D

No to Armie Hammer

No to Jason Lewis

Chris Pine would be a great Captain America. He is popular right now so a lot of non-cap fans may come see the movie.

I also like Jensen Ackles, Josh Hartnett, and Damon.

StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 2/12/2010, 7:56 AM
lol Pitt has some pits.

@ Fixit I disagree with the statement that he would need a beard to hide it.

I wonder why he said "Can't tell you who the other couple of choices are, cause that'll work against me for reasons I don't want to get into." This leads me to think Chris Pine is in the running but will not get it.

I like Chris Pine and all but he already has Star Trek. I am still pulling for Jensen Ackles.

Plus Pine is a Dumb @$$ for cheating on Olivia Munn.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/12/2010, 7:57 AM
I wouldn't mind Pine too much although he seems a bit small..height and build. But seriously, isn't all of this moot since Johnson has already said that it wouldn't be someone we immediately know?..He could be lying I guess. Anyway, Que more pics of Ackles, Hammers, Damons, Valleys, Pitts and Lewis's..no Worthingtons yet? Your slipping boys!

I seriously doubt this scoop is legit: As someone pointed out, Paramount only has a distribution deal. I am pretty sure they'd have nothing to do with casting for the movie. It'd be up to Marvel studios unless it was another studio who owned the rights -- which it isn't.
