CAPTAIN MARVEL - Everything The First Official Images Tell Us About Marvel's Next Movie
Yesterday, the first images from Captain Marvel were released and we're now taking a closer look at them to figure out what exactly they tell us about the next entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe...
Yesterday, Marvel Studios finally pulled back the curtain on Captain Marvel and with that came an awesome gallery of official images. More details are expected to be revealed about the movie in the coming days but for now, we're taking a closer look at those to see what exactly these stills reveal.
There's a surprising amount here, including characters you may have missed the first time and minor details which actually shed an awful lot of light on what to expect from the anticipated 2019 release.
From the members of Starforce to hints about heroes and villains who will be introduced somewhere down the line, be sure to click on the "View List" button below to take a look at the full list of reveals.
Captain Atlas And Ultimus
Up until now, these two members of the Green Lantern Corps Starforce have not been identified but looking at the comic book roster of the team, common sense says they're Captain Atlas and Ultimus.
Both have blue skin and if I had to hazard a guess, the guy on Carol's left is Captain Atlas and the big dude at the back is probably Ultimus (this time with a beard rather than long hair). This makes the most sense looking at the source material but don't be surprised if they're not given much to do.
Ronan The Accuser...In Green!
Just like his comic book counterpart, Ronan the Accuser is shown here decked out in a green suit which will no doubt make fans of the source material very happy indeed. He's clearly in charge of Starforce alongside Jude Law's unnamed character and probably reports directly to the Supreme Intelligence.
What ultimately leads to him becoming a villain remains to be seen but it wouldn't be at all surprising if we at least get some hints about the conflict which is to come between the Kree and Xandarians.
Comic Book Accurate Skrulls
Well, you can't fault Marvel Studios when it comes to bringing the Skrulls to life on the big screen in a comic accurate fashion. Their costumes look a little too busy but still alien-like and not only are they sporting the familiar chin and ears but Marvel has even found a way to incorporate the purple on their heads. They don't look overly formidable so here's hoping that changes when they're in action.
Starforce
Starforce was introduced in the comics as a group that clashed with The Avengers when they attempted to stop the Kree going to war with the Shi'ar Empire. A couple of iterations of the team has existed since then but it appears as if they'll be portrayed as a Green Lantern Corps style strike team in Captain Marvel that steps up to protect the Kree Empire (and possibly the larger Marvel universe).
We'll get to their leader a little later but it's been said that Jude Law's character is in charge of the team which means that Ronan is either a member or the person who the Starforce leader reports to.
Infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.
Ben Mendelsohn plays Talos in Captain Marvel, a villain who played a key role in the Kree/Skrull War in the comic books. He was something of an outcast among his people for not being able to shapeshift but he still rose up the ranks to become a feared leader. This version clearly can change his appearance, though, because it's been confirmed that this shot of the actor is Talos in his disguised human form.
Apparently, he'll have infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. but which charater he's posing as isn't instantly apparent. Personally, I would be willing to bet that he's going to be disguised as Nick Fury's boss in the movie!
Minn-Erva
One of the coolest reveals in this batch of stills is our first look at Gemma Chan's Minn-Erva. Clearly an ally to Carol Danvers (to begin with, at least), she's romantically linked to Captain Atlas in the comic books and has clashed with both Mar-Vell and Captain Marvel over the years. Ultimately made as powerful as Carol, don't be surprised if the mid-credits teases her return somewhere down the line!
Starforce's Leader (And His Glowing Eyes)
Interestingly, the name of Jude Law's Starforce leader hasn't been revealed as of yet but common sense says that he'll be taking on the role of Mar-Vell. His eyes look very alien so that could be an indication he's more powerful than he looks or that he's part-human, part-Kree (which, based on comments from Brie Larson, could be the case seeing as her origin story is seemingly being altered).
Common sense says that Mar-Vell will probably end up making some sort of heroic sacrifice by the time all is said and done...unless he's revealed as a Skrull, of course! Still, I can't help but feel like it would be cool for him to survive and return to Earth with Carol to help defeat the Mad Titan.
Korath As A Hero
It was revealed fairly early on that Korath will return in Captain Marvel alongside Ronan and we'll presumably get to see what led to him abandoning the Kree Empire alongside his future boss to attempt to track down the Power Stone. Both his and Ronan's fall from grace promises to be very interesting and if you look closely, you'll notice that he doesn't have any cybernetic enhancements.
Those were torn out by Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy when he killed the villain so don't be surprised if we end up learning what leads to those being implanted at some course during this adventure.
Carol Danvers In S.H.I.E.L.D.
Captain Marvel isn't going to be your standard superhero origin story as Carol Danvers will already have her powers when the movie begins. Her past will presumably be explored via flashbacks and it's said that she returns to Earth at some point to learn the truth about that. In this shot, we see her wearing a S.H.I.E.L.D. cap and presumably hanging out with Nick Fury (how they meet is hard to say).
The Hero Takes Flight
Talking of Carol's past, it looks like we'll definitely get to see her time as a pilot with the Air Force based on this shot and it should be fun seeing how Marvel explores that part of her life and just how much time we'll spend in the cockpit with the hero. Will an accident lead to her gaining her powers?
That remains to be seen but it definitely feels like there will be some Green Lantern similarities here!
A Badass Suit
Well, I'm really not sure there's anything bad to say about this! Looking like it's been torn straight out of the pages of the comic books, an argument could be made that her suit is a little too busy but so is Captain America's and that looks great in action. What's going to be really interesting is seeing whether or not she dons a helmet because it definitely feels like that would complete this amazing costume.
Nick Fury, Desk Jockey
We know Nick Fury as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. but when we meet this younger version of the character, he's going to be a "desk jockey" working at the spy organisation. We're obviously going to learn how he lost his eye and it's ironic that he has a cut above it here as he has a chat with Carol.
If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that a Skrull is responsible for that and the fact that they're able to change their appearance so could be what ultimately leads to him not being able to trust people.
Maria Rambeau
Here, we see Carol's best friend Maria and she just happens to be a single mother. Her callsign is "Photon" and that's a reference to the handle used by her daughter in the comic books when she suited up as a superhero. That's one of many names Monica had and it would make perfect sense for Carol (who doesn't age) to reconnect with her when she arrives on Earth in the present day.
Monica Rambeau
Currently known as Spectrum, Monica is a hero in her own right and someone who has frequently worked alongside Captain Marvel. While Marvel Studios will more than likely hold off on giving her powers until a second or third instalment of Carol's solo franchise, there's a lot of potential here to bring a woman of colour to the big screen with superpowers. Will we also see an older Maria too?
A First Look At Hala
In all of these images, we get quite a few shots of Hala, the homeworld of the Kree. Unfortunately, there's not enough here to really give us an idea how it will look but it's definitely pretty alien, something which is evident from the architecture and clothes being worn by Carol Danvers here.
Kevin Feige has been quoted as saying that much of Captain Marvel takes place in outer space, so we'll no doubt get to see quite a bit of both Hala and the homeworld of the shape-shifting alien Skrulls.
