Batman v Superman will be Polarizing

Look, I'm not making an article called Civil War vs. Batman v Superman - we already know we're going to watch both - but, I'm here to tell you why you shouldn't expect a high Rotten Tomatoes score for Batman v Superman.

The guy Jeremy who does the CinemaSins video does sins for the trailers on his own personal channel. Of the first trailer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice he seemed excited, now, though, he said that the movie will probably be like Terminator Genisys. This is because Doomsday was revealed and he is probably going to be a part of the third act. Now it's not that Doomsday was revealed, it's how he was revealed. Bombastic, grand entrance, and a big reveal kind of moment. It's not that it was in the third act, but how it was revealed.

People have been saying marketing should've been like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you know what, maybe it should have been. They aren't too far apart, though. In it's very first teaser the new Star Wars film revealed the third act shot, Kylo Ren igniting his lightsaber in the forest ready for battle. Never mind you that the description of what happens in that scene had already leaked. However, the way it was done was nuanced and almost subtle. We all knew it was in the third act, let's face it, but we could believe it might even be part of the first act. The first Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer is like the first Star Wars one. So is Captain America: Civil War, although that film also showed what happens in the third act in the trailer, albeit they did it like Star Wars.

The thing to note, though, was either you loved the trailer or hated it. Sure there are some of you who are like Doomsday's cool but [frick] Lex Luthor or Lex Luthor's cool but Doomsday looks like Abomination (which is kind of the point, given that Doomsday's just a grey version of the Hulk made by DC to kill Superman). Most of you loved it or hated it. General audience loved it. Look at those YouTube reactions, tweets. Most people loved it.

I love Man of Steel, sure dialogue is bad and there is a colouring problem (it made Superman have the skin tone of Paige), but a lot of that seems gone in this movie. There even seems to be a lot more humour (because Superman destroying an asshat's truck isn't funny right? - it is funny, people in my theatre laughed). However, still people are criticizing this. They agree on the most part that the visuals and general look of the movie will be gorgeous. However, they pander on and on about overstuffing and multiple plotlines and subplots (even though there is one plot, perhaps a few subplots and a character arc for every round character). This all leads to one conclusion: critical reception for this film will be divided.

As shown by WhatCulture, there are people who decided they will not like this movie when it was announced. As shown by almost everywhere else, there are people who decided they will like this movie when it  was announced. As I've shown, even though Man of Steel is in the "Rotten" section of Rotten Tomatoes, a majority of reviews are positive and 76% of the audience liked it. It is not a bad movie. It is like Fountain or Vanilla Sky or that Che Guevara movie - it is polarizing. I can tell you this, maybe Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have a slightly lower score than 56% or maybe it will have a slightly higher score. The score, though, will be around there though because do the math - this movie will polarize. I want it to be good, and I'll probably enjoy it, but I know that the reaction will be divided.

Do you agree with me? Leave your thoughts below.

because Superman destroying an asshat's truck isn't funny right?

It's not at all funny to me, especially not in the context of the movie.

It was really no different than Superman whooping that jackass' ass for his seat at the end of Superman II.

Which I didn't like either.

the movie will be attacked by many. also you put something out and over 91% of people give an approval but you get inseure disney fan boys attacking it and trying to put a negative spin on things, this whole situation really reflects badly on the disney trolls.

@Dandy when you say something is mixed in response it has to be based on something. all I see are a couple of internet fanboys saying them and their buddys dont like it and trying to act lije its the world. but the truth is everyone I know liked it but I cant base my views on that.

1. Rotten Tomatoes scores mean nothing, they are the opinions of uppity paid critics and that's it. I'm actually really shocked they loved a movie like Mad Max Fury Road usually films like that are given bad scores cause critics think those movies are meaningless.

2. Most movies in general are polarizing, for every person that liked The Dark Knight there are 5 more who hated or disliked it. For every person who liked Age Of Ultron there 5 more who hated or disliked it.

3. Trailers are misleading we know this by now. Ironman 3 trailer made the movie seem serious when in reality the movie was an action comedy and a bad one IMO. Same can be said for Age Of Ultron.

This movie being a failure is not an option for Warner Bros, that's why they've brought on so much talent for it. With that said, I was not a fan of Doomsday in the trailer. However, everyone is jumping the gun on this movie after that trailer (after all we all knew Doomsday would more than likely be in the movie).

Also - It seems like most people complaints for MOS was the writing. Well, based off of resume that's been fixed.

yeah so why was the whole truck thing not funny? Seems like some people have never seen a crude comedy before.

@thelovedoc it doesnt matter whether its funny or not just that its not made by marvel. The vocal minority who have tried to slur this film can [frick]ing get a life.

@dandy yeah also its not 91% its more like 93% stick to arts buddy.

@TheLoveDoc

yeah so why was the whole truck thing not funny?

To me it wasn't funny because it showed a frustrated, vindictive Clark. That's just not something I want to see him be, at least not in such a petty context.

@RandomDCdude

I could tell you about quite a few Marvel scenes that made me smile, but since we're not talking about Marvel but Man of Steel here how about I point you to a scene from that movie?!

@RandomDCdude

If saying "I found this specific scene to not be funny for these reasons" counts as "bashing" in your eyes I don't see too much sense in further discussion. Also I find the desire to somehow connect everything to Marvel a little confusing. My feeling on MoS are my feelings on MoS.

I don't begrudge you your love for MoS, not at all. Just try not to be a dick about the things you like and dislike.

Whether a movie is rotten or not is not some hard to fathom mathematical thing. Its just how many people voted it up against how many voted it down from their pool of critics.

Just pull up imdb. The critics (metacritic) put it at an average of 5.5 and the audience (500.000 people at least) put it at 7.2. The people usually vote higher when it comes to blockbuster action movies so you end up with a rather mediocre score overall.

Which is why the discussions are so heated, because the opinions ARE divided and ends up being just good enough on average. No matter how much you love it, the movie is just decent to most people, neither absolute trash, nor the best CBM ever made. Its just there.

There is no grand conspiracy, the guys who want to hate the movie from the start are never enough to check the opinions of 500.000 people. Man of Steel is simply not as enjoyable to most people as it is to you. That is all it is.

If BvS is good it'll get its accolades, if not, it won't.

I also think that this movie won't get a good critical rating, the reason being even more simplier than you explanation.

To me, the main problem with that last trailer is that it changed drastically the perception of where the movie stand in terms of DC perceived quality.

Is it more closer to Nolan's TDK trilogy like the two first trailers suggested or closer to Snyder's MOS ?

This is really what that trailer did, it shifted the PERCEPTION of that movie putting it more on par with MOS than BB/TDK/TDKR level of quality.

Again, without the movie released and based on trailers alone, you can only go by perception and in that case, the last trailer did a disservice by positionning the perception of the movie in MOS territory rather than a pure nolanized slick version.

It also handled poorly the comedic relief and quibs (maybe due to poor editing) since it opens the gate of a not so glorious DC era with the unwelcome Schumacher corniness comparisons (eg : Lex compared to the Riddler).

The worst thing that could now happen is if the critical consensus make it obvious that it repeats the same problems MOS had or even worse, that it makes MOS the better movie by comparison.

If the movie is/feels more like the 3rd trailer than the other two, then it will defintely be polarizing and may even end up in rotten territory.

I love Man of Steel, it's an awesome movie, especially if your a fan of the comics, especially the 90's Superman arcs too, and more recent incarnations, which I think are awesome.

The only good thing about a higher critic score would be that it could calm down the flame wars on here.... a little, there would still be flamewars but there could also be more of an argument and less talk of RT. Whenever there is less talk of RT, we are in for better conversations all around on here.

But, I really don't care about the critics, I still don't get the RT scores, but this movie had a job to do, and that was to bring Superman into modern times, and that's exactly what it did.... and it was successful and we are getting the DCEU

So, regardless of what people say negatively about Man of Steel's reception and success, their wrong, because we already won, Man of Steel was successful enough to bring us the DCEU.

GhostDog - 12/9/2015, 2:30 PM
Its sad because BvS cant afford to be polarizing and divisive like its predecessor MOS. If that happens, then every DCEU film will be met with apprehension and worry.
