COMICS: George Pérez No Longer On Writing Or Art Duties As Of Superman #7!

Well, this is something of a shock move by DC! After the poor reception to Superman #1, it has been revealed that George Pérez will no longer be on the title as of #7! Why, and who's replacing him? Find out here...

Newsarama reveal that George Pérez will no longer write or provide breakdown art for Superman, from #7 onward. The site has learned that the new creative team will be writer Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens on layouts and/or pencils. It is believed that Pérez may remain on the title as finisher/inker.

Superman #1 opened up to very mixed reviews, with many criticizing the title as they did with Green Arrow #1 earlier this month. And what happened to that? Giffen took over from J.T. Krul as writer. Having read the issue myself, I definitely think this is for the best. The dialogue was very cheesy, the story itself was fairly unimpressive and after seeing how well Superman has been handled by every other writer during the relaunch, it was a shame to see his main title being such a massive let down! What did you guys make of it? And how do you you feel about Pérez no longer being on writing duties?

Haven't read Superman #1 yet, may not check it out after the mediocre reception I've heard.
If it's as bad as I've heard, then this is good news.

It was UNDERWHELMING, Just stick to Action Comics, which by the way should have been the first book of the relaunch not Batman/GL team up.

Jurgens is a veteran Superman artist so this is cool.

the books for the fringe characters have been the best swamp thing, demon knights, animal and several other characters have been really good. Oh and finally DC decided to show people that Aquaman could be bad ass(should have tweaked his costume a little though.

I don't want to be a Superman-apologist or DC-apologist, so as Superman would say (in this issue) "Enough is enough, it's time to get snuffed!"

Being a big Superman fan, this title was disappointing. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars:

Bye-bye George.

@Jordanstine - UGH! That dialogue is pretty bad. George Perez is one of my all time favorite artists, but he is no writer.

I think this is just one step closer to the relaunch wheels coming off. Simone !@#$% up Barbara Gordon, Perez $%^& up Superman. C'mon, people!!! If it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT!!!

the third person narration in the book was just redundant, the art pretty much explained everything. It had some cool ideas. Did anyone else notice race change, and Perry White looks like he could kick the shit out of Superman.

The art was actually fine, better than most recent Perez work (that damn ink marker!) and the story was ok...no worse than the rest of the new, improved, same old crap of the DCnU. Jurgens is an ass, though and Giffen isn't right for this kind of book (imo)..

Still need to read it, the art looked great.
It seems when there's a writing space at DC that needs filling, Keith Giffen's the go to guy. First Green Arrow, now Superman.

@ Jordanstine- That dialogue is about as corny as the dialogue was in the 60's and 70's.

With today's comic book readers they demand a sense of realism in the writing and George just couldn't pull it off. I applaud them for keeping him on in some capacity because he has talent to share. He's just not a wordsmith.

The title was a major crap - from the writing to the drawings. Lee and Johns did a strongly wrong choice here. And I think that Giffen and Jurgens will be exactly the same mistake.

Put Morrison on writing and Jim Lee on the art, guys, c'mon!

Dan Jurgens is the man! Death of Supermman will always be the best comic of all time!

Just picked this one up last night and read it. (Also grabbed Aquaman #1, Hawkman #1 and Utimate Xmen #1 and Ultimate Spidey #2) and this is weird seeing this article since as I was reading Supes last night was thinking like WTF is even going on here...the battle he has was so weak...made no sense and the whole story was all over the place. Supes was whiney and Lois's storyline made no sense to me. Glad they got some replacements comin cuz I wasn't sure where this thing was going at all.

I pulled some of my old books (early 90's) and the dialogue was kinda the same just old

cheesy stuff which I can see it from good ol GP Since he's probably writing for a young

innocent readers where as kids today are nothing like kids of the 80/90's,it's blood n guts or nothing.

As much as I love Perez's pencils, he's just not a good writer. Better to leave that to someeone else.

What is wrong with green arrow#1? I thought green arrow was a great comic. What was wrong with Superman#1 I'm going to Newbury comics tonight to buy the new Superman and find out why people hate it.

@Misterfan...Agreed...that's exactly what I said when I read it...a Fire Alien? Really?? And he dispatched that thing in a couple of pages and it never even explained what it was, why it was there, what it wanted, it kinda touched on a possible Origin and then it was gone...not even sure if it'll come back...you assume it does but it was almost like a Smallville eposide where Supes just takes care of a big foe in a single episode in the last 15 minutes...
