I personally cant wait for the new 52. If you guys did not know the comic book industry is suffering, both Marvel and DC. Paper comics are not sailing like they use to. So I hope that DC's New 52 can get DC back to the top.

I don't think they're going ALL IN the way they need to be. If this truly is a relaunch, why hold onto the recent Batman/Green Lantern story lines?

IMO they should be truly starting from scratch, treating each book like it's a movie, giving the DEFINITIVE take/origin story for each character, and then build it up from there. I don't mind putting up with the origin story for every character one more time as long as it's the DEFINITIVE take on the character. We'd have to put up with origin stories for every CBM anyway.

Really looking forward to this. I have, I believe, twelve or thirteen of the new DC Relaunch titles in my subscription list.

Can't wait for September.

I just don't think Didio or lEe have the talent to do this. Yes the market is down but DC has tanked while he was EiC and like all good bureaucracies, he was promoted for his efforts. I can see he feels passionate about DC but he is not the man for the job. As for Lee, well he is a talented artist, not nearly as talented a designer but has absolutely no credentials as a man capable of guiding the business editorially.

I've always been more of a DC fan than Marvel because DC embraces the more fun side of comics and Marvel tries to be realistic and dark and usually it just fails. But I have to agree their live action movies are just a piece of shit every since Superman 3 it's been down hill. Green Lantern was such a disappointment but the animated movies are just pure awesome.

As for the Reboot in the comics personally I think it's a good idea.... well some of it anyway. I hope it works out for them.

It's time for new characters already for a new generation. Instead of a reboot they should have just pushed the younger characters forward and let the older characters hang back a bit. Marvel and DC won't be around much longer if they keep pulling these cheap trick in order to get new readers.

That is why Anime/Manga is so much better, you always find new characters, new series and new ideas left and right and that is why they have such big followings.

Anime/Manga is so successful in the entire world because unlike American Comic books and cartoons they don't aim at one particular audience, they branch out. If you like cooking their is a anime/manga for cooking, if you like sports their are anime/manga series based around sports. People are always asking why I like Anime/Manga over America Comic books and Cartoons well those are the reasons why. Marvel and DC should learn from Anime/Manga.

As for Marvel they aren't doing any better. Who gives a crap about Fear Itself besides Fanboys? Big Events don't bring in new readers at all and plus they over charge for their books, $3.99 and for what? A couple of pages of artwork and story with lame advertisements and tons of wiki padding in the back of the books? Yeah not helping at all. The big two don't care about fans at all, at the end of the day it's about making money and that's it.

I am gonna wait and see what they look like a year from now before I let DC have any of my greenbacks. The last decade or so the only DC characters that I still love are Swamp Thing, Batman, Green Lantern and the Creeper. Swamp Thing and Creeper haven't really been given much love from DC in recent years, so...

Reboots and updates are need every decade or so. It' just that we've had a few from DC in the last 5-10 years. But not a company wide one like this. So yeah I'm excited to see where they go with this, as it's not completely scrapping things. Batman nc will return, the GL titles are still pretty much in line with their status quo. So we'll see. I trrust in Didio and Lee.

@Intruder
Trying to resemble Marvel? Im sure theyre going to have to go about this at a completely different angle because if Marvel was so 'cool' 'edgy' and 'accessible' the industry wouldn't be in trouble right now. Personally I think the idea of something completely different, something new, would be exciting to most readers new or old. Maybe they disagree with some of the creative choices but its not like no publisher has ever done anything fans have been dead against before. I mean I swore I'd never read Spider-man after Quesada destroyed so many good things in O.M.I.T but I still found myself picking up Amazing Spiderman #666 the other week for Spider-Island. Its going to be stories that maintain readers. Nothing else.
darkknightlegend
darkknightlegend - 8/11/2011, 7:31 AM
@Trudy The whole point of this is to get more new readers. That would be good for Marvel and DC. Being 'accessible' is what's going to bring new readers in. No new reader is going to jump on during a 654th issue because they'll think they have to know what the hell happens in the other 653 issues.
Plus There's not a huge difference in sales and the dollar share can be put down to Marvel comics being more expensive etc. Add to that that fact that sales are down all round neither publisher is laughing.

Lol I had another comment but for some reason the sites gobbled it :P I agree with alot of what youre saying. I remember Todd Macfarlane saying something like that and I wish thats the way they did it because I know I wont be able to afford it. But then again If i was thinking of picking up anything near 52 issues anyway I wouldnt be able to afford it. It is a huge money making ploy but at the end of the day its an industry and it has to be. For me theres 3 or 4 titles that look worth picking up. Im supporting it for the 'greater good' Hell DiDio's brainwashed me already...

This whole thing is indeed pretty damn shady. I mean, just come out with it. Every single time i see those two talking about this reboot together, they look like tweedle dee and tweedle dum, trying to cover their asses after fumbling something they shouldn't've. Why can't you just fess up and let it roll? Nothing is going to "spoil it" for anybody, the more we'll hear of it, the more we'll have a reason to be interested in it. Don't just stand there and look at each other giggling like school girls cause you know something we don't. Give us the lowdown already. Personally, it really irks me that all this reboot is attached to Flashpoint. That just seems like a lame emergency exit/escape route they can take to retcon the whole show if it doesn't go their way. You know what people appreciate??? BALLS! That's why the Ultimate Line is still selling books even after the Ultimatum fiasco and it's also why Ironman did so well in theaters. It didn't give a flying shit! It kicked ass like there was no other outcome possible. That's what DC should aim for with their reboot. But that's definitely not what they're doing. All that i've read of the teasers for the books so far have ONE thing in common. It all reaks of "SAFE". Well, the safe nerd that doesn't come out of his mother's basement will never be the kid that gets the nookie behind the church with the school's head chearleader. SHOW ME YOUR BALLS DC!!!
Shaman
Shaman - 8/11/2011, 8:18 AM
Hell, the whole reason why DC's Indigo line ever got so popular and marketable is BECAUSE they showed they had balls to the walls! Quit sucking on your Superman blanky! Grow some pubes.
Really
Really - 8/11/2011, 8:30 AM
I'm reserving any judgement on this until I read a few of the books. I understand that this kind of thing happens and needs to happen every generation or so, but for whatever reason, it doesn't seem as organized as it might have been in the past! But I'm hopeful that it'll be a success, and the industry will pick up some new readers! I'm looking forward to picking up that Justice League #1 in a few weeks.

I certainly see more creativity in giving a bunch of writers new books varying in genre and characters at a fresh start then "The New Dark Avengers" or the return of Human Torch only a few months after his death and Civil War: X-Men edition. That is not saying there is no creative things happening at Marvel because that would not be true. But I cannot see how this whole move is without any creative merit and just a cheap cash in.

I agree with intruder. This "new Coke" stunt will fall flat in less than 6 months. All the readers that have enjoyed "Classic Coke" all their lives will be turned off by this extreme makeover of beloved ICONIC characters.... and all this in an effort to garner more young readers. The number of new readers will be vastly outweighed by the number of longtime readers that drop their DC titles......like me.

I have been buying both company's books for 40 years now, and Crisis was NOT even CLOSE to the reboot they are doing now. It did not change the appearance of these Iconic heroes nor their make-up as much as what is taking place now. Superman in blue jeans, t-shirt and a big red cape? Superman in armor???? No thanks. Thats like Marvel giving the Hulk a gun.

Intruder is right. DC is in need of new sales and this desparate attempt will drive them to bankruptcy with the loss of such a large old school fanbase.
niknik
niknik - 8/11/2011, 9:24 AM
Oh, and since when has it EVER been necessary to only jump into a new title at the beginning of a reboot? I have "jumped in" to nearly every title I ever collected at a point DURING its run. Did ANY of you have the good fortune of "jumping in" to ANY of the Marvel titles back in 61, 62, and 63??? I didn't. You see all you really need to have a decent jumping in point is at the beginning of a new creative teams run on the character.

They have these things called "Back Issues". Don't know if you've ever heard of them before, but they are a great source for catching up with a characters recent history.

This crap about needing a jumping in point for new readers is the most rediculous bull$hit I have ever read on this site.

the way i see it at least they recognize that they need to change something about their product. marvel is too dumb to realize that what they are doing is largely crap. now there are a few titles of marvels i love deapool, hulk and avengers academy are all books i look forward to each month. however the majority of it is crap. particularly the last two " big events" have been the most bland, boring, "let's do exactly the same thing" crap. fear it's self has thus far been five issues of the most obvious people imaginable ( hulk, thing and juggernaut. who didn't see that coming) picking up f***ing hammers! dc isn't perfect and who knows how this 52 will go, but at least they are showing that they have the brains and the balls to move forward and try to deliver something that will make me actually want to read again and not just pick up books because they are in my hold at my local shop.

GOD how Dan Didio and Jim Lee make me sick just looking at them! As crudely a he may have put it and I hate to agree with Intruder but he's right...
Changing our beloved characters like this isn't going to stop the digital age from running book stores out of business! Sure, Jim Lee can draw, in some peoples opinion, but he's a crap designer....
