HELLO!! My name is Alex and this is my first post.
I have always been a devout dc fan. Marvel comics are good in their own right but DC comics are the older and more iconic comic book company. Dc comics created the superhero with superman in 1938 and started the golden age of comics. The marvel we know and talk about began in the silver age with the exception of captain America. Marvel really established itself in the 1960's and benefits from not being killed by the whole seduction of the innocent issue. Jump ahead a few decades to the 1990's and when comics almost died, marvel went bankrupt but Dc held its own.

What’s the point of all this back-story? The point is that despite all of marvels past financial woes and the fact that most of its characters came after DC's top characters- marvel dominates the field. The first major Hollywood superhero movie was 1978's superman which still sets the standard for comic movies. In the 32 years since, DC comics have put Batman, Cat woman, Steel, swamp thing, Jonah hex, Green Lantern and Super girl on the screen. (Watchmen does not count). Marvel on the other hand started with blade in 1998. In the 13 years since, X-men, Spiderman, Daredevil, Hulk, the Punisher, Elektra, Fantastic four, Ghost Rider, Iron man, Thor and Captain America had movies made. That’s DC with 8 individual character movies not including sequels or reboots in 33 years. Marvel has 12 individual character movies not including sequels or reboots. Including sequels and reboots marvel murders DC with 24 for marvel and 18 for DC.

In both counts it seems that when you look at the minor numerical advantage Marvel has over DC that its not so bad but, A- DC had 33 years over Marvels 13 and B- Marvel has only 5 tragic movie missteps to DC's 8. Marvels were Punisher, Elektra, Fantastic four-2, Hulk and Spiderman 3. DC has 8 with, Super girl, Superman 4, Swamp thing 2, Batman and robin, Steel, Cat woman, Jonah hex and most tragically Green lantern.

Another point to note is that DC's modern movie age began in 2005 with Batman Begins. Since then only 4 other movies they produced were Superman Returns, The Dark Knight, Jonah Hex, and green lantern. That’s 5. Since marvel started the modern movie age with 2000’s X-men,- Spiderman, Daredevil, Hulk, the Punisher, Elektra, Fantastic four, Ghost Rider, Iron man, Thor and Captain America. That’s 11. Detective Comics needs to stop allowing Marvel to set the pace and remind the general public that DC can compete. Almost all of DC’s current offerings are a reaction to something marvel started first. Like DC’s current animated movie franchise. These movies are great but they only started AFTER Marvel did their Avengers movie in 2006. DC must start acting more instead of reacting like they’ve been.

WAKE UP DC! REMIND YOUR FANS OF WHY THEY ARE YOUR FANS- AND LET EVERYONE ELSE KNOW THAT YOU CONTINUE TO EXIST.
Remember people, I’m a comic fan and I give Marvel credit for their current accomplishments. Please keep all comments factual and respectful- Thanks!

@GDSuperguy- Dude hell no. I would still put Green Lantern over Superman Returns. At least GL actually fought somebody in his film and at least there was a REAL villain in the film, rather than Kevin Spacey and Kumar.

Green Lantern was Batman Begins good when compared to SR.

Plus at least they got the character of Hal more or less right. What about Superman in SR? Oh...he was a stalker/bastard father yeah that's always a great thing.

This is one of those rare instances where I have to disagree with you GDSuperguy. Superman Returns belongs on THE shit-list.

But where I DO agree with you, is that this does sound suspiciously like Intruder to me too.

to TheGODDAMNSUPERGUYs points- fantastic four was good enough to make a sequel so i gave it a pass and daredevil was OK. It just had problems. your right about every other marvel movie but im one of those few people that actually liked X3- Xaviers death is in my oppinion the best superhero movie moment in cbm history.
For dc, Superman 3 and Batman Forever were good enough for sequels. Finally the 1997 worlds finest superman/batman movie was simply a 3 part superman the animated series episode that was treated as a movie. Thank you for your thoughtful and respectful comment, I wish you well. Dane's comment however is undefined and therfore irrelivant.

you said DC started in the golden age of comics which is why they had multiple superman and batman movies in the 40's through 60's. And you didn't talk anything about comics or TV shows or animated movies which if you added those your article would be called Marvel COMICS SUCK!!- Sincerely, a Marvel comics fan.

You over simplified things to the point that I don't want to even reply. Reconsider everything you wrote in this editorial, and try not to oversimplify things.

Marvel may do more, but DC always does better. Think of how the recent Batman movies were, and DC's animated movies. Marvel can't compete with them.
Marvel's only excuse is that 20th Century Fox messed up the movies. Since Marvel has taken control of their own production they have been good movies though. Now that Marvel and DC both have some major backings, it will be good to see how they compete. I would like to see better Marvel animated movies though

@Intruder- I see, so you basically are agreeing with yourself? Since obviously Intruder=Alex.

;D

Plus you're mistaken I'm afraid. DC doesn't suck, Warner Bros are the ones who suck. If we're talking about the actual FILMS. That's WB's fault not DC. DC is a great company, better than your weak Marvel. DC is older...heck their flagship character- SUPERMAN alone...as a character even predates the entire Marvel comics company.

DC's animation paved the way for marvel; marvel's only decent shows have come after DC made history with the Batman Animated Series, and marvel's only current animated show thats worth watching (The Avengers) came after DC made the JLA series, and you must be kidding, DC starting animation after 2006?? have you ever heard of Mask of the Phantasm? that was released in 1993 and is arguably better than any film Marvel's ever made

Marvel comics r better because their characters are better. With the exception of Batman, the core, old-school line-up of DC characters were not created with the inherent pathos and humanity that Stan Lee instilled in his characters. That human vulnerability is what connects us to characters.
