DC  and Marvel are the two biggest comic book publishers in the world with iconic superhero characters we have come to love through comic books. Over the years, both companies have expanded their businesses the include movies, TV shows, Animations, games and mechandise in order to expand their universes. We are going to look at who has the lead in aparticular category
not who will win a fight, or which team is better.

  • COMICS;

Lets start from the traditional battleground comic book sales and we shall look at yearly sales for the past few years. Lets look at the market share of boyh companies over the last 5 years.

YEAR DC MARVEL
2010 34.00% 43.35%
2011 36.77% 40.93%
2012 36.75% 37.59%
2013 33.50% 36.97%
2014 32.47% 36.78%

As you can see above, Marvel has dominated the last 5 years when it comes to yearly unit sales. This has been aided by the constant #1 issues, events and exposure the new readers throught movies. This strategy has worked for Marvel which has led them to take chances with lesser known and new characters like Ms.Marvel, Silk, Spider-Gwen which have become critical success.

DC on the other hand has less new #1 issues and mostly depends on its heavy hitter comics for most sales, the lesser known characters don't sell as much as Marvel counterparts.All in all both companies have big sellers like Spiderman ,X-Men,Avengers,Batman,Superman but the is made due to the overral sales of the small characters.

WINNER: MARVEL

  • MOVIES;
When it come to movies it's kind of unfair to compare both companies becouse one has already established its universe while the other is just getting stated. MCU has achieved great success worldwide with characters like Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and becoming house hold names because their movies are light hearted, funny and enjoyable.

For DCCU, they have one movie in their slate right now (Man of Steel) which divided fans and critics alike with two other movies coming out next year it would be better to wait till then. I beleive DCCU underwent a silent reboot as they want us to forget about Superman Returns, Cat Woman,Green lantert like they never happened while saying hey the Dark Knight triology is badass.DC has all its characters so they can use them as they want but despite Warner Bros having more DC movies than Marvel Sudios, we still beleive that Marvel had agreat start yet they just got the winning fomula.

WINNER:MARVEL
  • TV;
DC had ahead start on Marvel with successful shows like Smallvile followed by Arrow, Flash, Gotham and constatine while Marvel decided to enter the TV game with Agents Of Shield, Agent Carter and Daredevil. Both companies have spinoffs of their shows in works with DC having three or four new show coming out this year, Marvel also has Jessica Jones coming filming now with two new show coming to ABC next season.
For me this is a tie  becouse Daredevil leveled the odds on the Marvel side.

DRAW
  • MARCHANDISE;
When it comes marchandise Marvel wins hands down due to the Disney marchandising machine which DC unfortunately doesn't have. Disney has a yearly plan for Marvel properties mostly aligned with the release of the movies. Last year alone both Spiderman and Avengers earned more than 1 billion dollars each in marchandise sales. DC doesn't have such huge numbers with the highest seller Batman generating about $400million with less than $1billion annual sales.

WINNER:MARVEL
  • GAMES;
DC better games compared to Marvel,games like Batman:Arkham city, Injustice:Gods Among Us are more enjoyable and are better known than what ever marvel is putting out.Their is really nothing to talk about here.

WINNER:DC
  • ANIMATION;
Here is another area DC does really well with Justice league:Throne of Atlantic and Batman and Robin released this year while Marvel has nothing in the pipeline.Marvel has animated movies but the quality is not comparable to their DC counterparts.

WINNER:DC

These are my scores for the two companies in the respective fields, as you see DC has two wins, Marvel three wins. What do you guys think about the scores.

When will you people realize that as fans, we should be rooting for both studios to be successful. You really thing the big-wigs are gonna compare if these movies do horribly. They will just say hey, COMIC BOOK MOVIES aren't worth the time and money. Same goes for the general audience. They don't care about DC vs Marvel, they're looking for good movies.
We as fans should be bummed when movies like Green Lantern, Elektra, X-men 3 etc comes out, because these movies could have stained the reputation of the GENRE, not the studio the releases them. Geez! This cannot be adults on this site talking about who is winning between DC & Marvel. NO WAY IN HELL
Personally, I want ALL comic book movies to do well, so i can enjoy the genre for years to come

@megabatfan am not saying that one company is better than the other, just trying the see who is doing better in a certain field.
@DrunkenNukem ya comic sales have gone down in the past years, not sure if people have given up buying comics or they are now buy soft copies.

fair enough I think marvel best selling comics each year are the ones with movies each year from various companies(Fox sony and disney). I predict that once the dc movie cinematic universe drops they will easily close the gap and overtake marvel in the other areas.

DC vs Marvel in terms of the Superheroes and not the company is something fans will always discuss & debate for as long as we live. Its part of being in the Internet Superhero Community! I have a feeling sometime in 2030's we are going to get a full blown DC vs Marvel live action movie. There's nothing like a great rivalry!

@InfinateMonkey thank you for being one of the adults on this site. The flame war threads are funny sometimes but I think some of you take for granted we're living in the golden age of comicbook movies. For us fans these are awesome times but the rest of hollywood and the main stream are having Superhero fatigue already and there are 20 something CBM's on the way the next few years. Please enjoy these times and instead of childish debating.............

I'll bite.

First off, [frick] comic sales. [frick] them. Sales doesn't equal quality. Also Marvel just about reboots every title every 2 years. Now that Star Wars is at Marvel, DC will never top them.

Second off what the [frick] is MARCHANDISE?

Marvel is winning where it counts... comic, movies, and merchandise. If they could pull their head from their a$$ex and get the games going, they might be able to buy out DC.

Did the world begin in 2010? Once I saw just the last 5 years being included I knew what I was in for. You neglected anything pre-2010....... How are we not including 1950-2010. Up until the 90's how many good TV shows and films did Marvel have. This article somehow forgets or doesn't include almost 50 YEARS if not more of DC dominance. Of course what would a flame war be without poorly written, one sided articles that forgets one company's history or assumes the comic book movie world began in 2010. I would like to see a more comprehensive article that takes each companies success in TV, movies, and merchandise over their whole history and one that does not conveniently begin at the dawn of the MCU. Flame War clickbait at it's finest.

I don't care for the competition. I love the whole genre. I do have my favorites. And some I don't care for. But there's not too much I don't care for. Only like two movies. Ya know what I did struggle with though? The Justice League cartoon from the nineties. And even Justice League Unlimited. Tried watching it again on Netflix, and I kept getting bored and skipping episodes. Love me some Batman, but the other characters just didn't do it for me. Or the villains. I guess I can only get into Batman as far as DC goes. Loved the Animated series. I quit buying the Animated movies by DC. Last one I watched was Public Enemies I think. I enjoyed the film Man of Steel. But didn't like it enough to buy it. If I love Bats vs Superman will definitely buy it. But still won't buy Man of Steel. Hopefully that movie will get me to enjoy Superman. I keep trying and failing. I watched most of Smallville, and enjoyed it for the most part, but got burnt out by the ninth season.

As far as Marvel goes, not too much I don't love. Comics in the eighties, to cartoons and action figures in the nineties, to go back to comics after that. And have loved almost every film. Except Ghost Rider SoV. Hated that one but really enjoyed the first one. Spider-Man 3, Blade 3, Wolverine Origins all had a little something that let me down, but I still enjoyed the movies. Recently their Ironman team up animated films have been horrible. But the couple anime series and films were awesome. Video game wise.....well there's not too much to say here is there. Loved the Ultimate Alliance games. Marvel Nemesis was great too.

So yeah I'm definitely more of a Marvel guy. But I don't hate on DC ever. I'm always willing to give them a chance at winning me over.

My feelings on the matter is that DC and Marvel are perfect reflections of one another.

One company dominates the film industry, but doesn't have the most well respected movie in the genre.

One company dominates the television industry, but doesn't have the most well respected show in the genre.

@DJThrawn the last five years was for only comic book sales and getting information on the performance of each company for their entire history is some hectic jod thats why i just compared the performance for the last few years only.

I'm a Marvel guy, but I couldn't care less about the competition. You did forget to mention that the comic sales are partially affected by the movies these days.

I want both to succeed.

And Marvel is kicking ass on TV. Not that they're beating DC, they're just kicking ass in general. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Daredevil(I've now seen the first 3 episodes, OH MY GOD) are all fantastic.

I consider Marvel losing at comics, dropping 7% in sales is way more telling. That means they aren't retaining their readership, ie arent putting out quality content

Yeah DC is down on comics, but they had a jump. Marvel has just been falling since 2010
