DC's New 52 Beat Marvel's Sales Figures In 2011

Marvel may have been on top for December's Market Share, but the figures are in for comics sold to stores in 2011 and DC's New 52 gamble has definitely paid off..

Since DC's relaunch went wide in September the "New 52" have outsold Marvel comic books, reversing a four year industry trend of downward sales. The figures represent the number of comics sold to stores and outlets, and not those bought by customers, but there is no doubt that DC's relaunch has been a success, at least financially.

Here are the figures from DC's best sellers in 2011 courtesy of THR..

Justice League no. 1, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, which has shipped 361,138 copies since its August launch and has gone to press five times;

Batman no. 1, written by Scott Snyder and penciled by Greg Capulo, which has sold 262,379 copies in two printings;

Action Comics no. 1, which sold 250,898 copies, going back to the press three times.

Those numbers, accurate as of Dec 13, easily rank those books as some of the decade's best. By contrast, Marvel’s best-selling 2011 comic was Ultimate Spider-Man no. 160, which featured the death of the hero and shipped 159,355 copies in June.

Apparently Marvel can still lay claim to having the best selling book of the decade with Amazing Spider-Man #583, the one with Barack Obama on the cover, shipping 530,500 issues. As THR note, such a successful relaunch for DC could well boost in-development projects at Warners like Justice League and influence the future of Batman, Superman and Flash..

Nice job. But going back to press is meaningless for collectors anymore. Unless it's advertised as a second printing and clearly stated on the cover, second printings have become a redundant term. Happy for the sales though.

Okay...I don't actually care about sales, as long as both still produce good comics - or at least people can enjoy, why bother?

But, let's just wait and see what will happen in this section later.

MARVEL IS STILL THE BEST FOR ME..THING IS, DC NEEDED TO MAKE GOOD CHANGE, MARVEL NEEDS TO JUST NOT MAKE ANY DRASTIC CHANGES BECAUSE OF IT..

Of course the sales are never a sign of quality, simply demand..and we all know people demand a lot of crap sometimes. But imo the New 52 has been hit and miss, with more hits than misses. Can't ask for much more, the issues are getting stronger too.

I'm not really a dc fan so them rebooting their entire line is neither here nor there to me but if I had a huge collection of DC and they throw that continuity in the bin I would be really angry. I would say DC makes up around 30% of my graphic novel collection and most of those are stand alone stories like red son.

Those are the best-selling books of the year? For a relaunch with all-new #1's involving major titles featuring some of the top characters in all of comics?
Back in the day, the top titles sold that many books every month- first printings, and did it without any gimmicks- just great stories with interesting characters.

Kes: Exactly right. I wouldn't trumpet this "New DC" as being truly successful unless they can hold their sales up through 2012. #1 issues sell to the curious and to the speculators. Holding on to those readers is the trick. Let's see where things stand at this point next year.

@Jolt the reason why you should care is because these are businesses. If they don't do well they close. Then we have no comics to read. This is great news for all of us DC fans, but it may not be accurate. Marvel owns several other subsidiary publishing names. I wonder if total sales include those titles or not?

The New 52 actually paid off. I have been reading Justice League, Action comics, Batman and (I don't believe this myself) Aquaman.

Aquaman has been terribly enjoyable in my opinion. Never thought I would be waiting with anticipation for a next issue for this character.

Superman on the other hand.... meh. Action comics is far superior imho.

Looking forward to X-Men Avengers on the Marvel side of things. avengers. X-Sanction was a promising start, let's see what comes out of it. If it's well tackled it can be epic.

Competition brings the best in everyone, so it looks like it will be a good year for comics!

DCnu was a good move and it paid off. Everyone would probably have their own approach, but updating and streamlining stories was what DC needed. Combined with DC nation on Cartoon Network and their animated films, they will have a strong base of fans.

Movie-wise, they need to tone down the risk-taking and focus on good drama, likable characters, and intense action.

Does it really matter whos selling more? As long as they both make great comics everything will be ok.

Scott Snyder's Batman is the BEST DC comic out now.

Im sure Marvel will have big sales with Avengers Sanction and X-Men VS Avengers.

Also today is Wednesday, time to go to the comic book store, lol.

OMG DC did something right and put out some good books!!! Quick CBM lets all bash it to show how much better Marvel is!!! None of us read the books because we only like Marvel, but I'm sure they sucked cause Superman has a new suit. We don't like when continuity gets changed at all, except when each year someone dies at the end of a huge story arch and comes back two months later, thats ok. DC is for old people, thats why all those Batman movies bombed at the box office, and thats why that little Batman game they put out bombed and no one played it. DC is such a joke!!!

Seriously People????? Read the books, you just might like something new and that would be ok. Marvel won't die if you read books from both companies. Trust me I've been doing it all my life.

superman78: I know, but companies like DC and Marvel? Going down so low that they will be closing? Nah.

And another reason why I can't care so much about it is because doesn't matter the news, people will just make this another war. (Not well said...but you get it.) Saying that, I confirm Hela's comment. :)
