Happy Hanukkah! The story of Jewish hero Judah Maccabee told in “Hammer of God” comic book

The evening of December 16th marks the beginning of the 8 day Jewish festival of Hanukkah. This event celebrates the Second Temple’s rededication during a Jewish revolt against the Seleucid Empire, led by the Maccabees. The following is a look at a comic book chronicling these events. (It may also shed some light on what Mel Gibson’s mothballed movie “The Maccabees” was about.)

The story of the Maccabees is a very important one in Jewish history.  From 167-160 BC, Judah Maccabee led a revolt against the Seleucid Empire, and ushered in a brief but long sought restoration of Jewish worship at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.  This event is commemorated by the festival of Hanukkah.  Here we have a comic book  Hammer of God, that tells us the story of Judah Maccabee.

Who can forget Mel Gibson’s verbal demolition of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas back in 2012?  It turned out it was because Eszterhas had been jerking Gibson around for 18 months over a script for a film based on the Maccabees.  Now, this video might not be quite as entertaining as hearing Mel scream “HOOORRAAYYYY!!!” at the top of his lungs, but it may just give you an idea of what Joe Eszterhas was allegedly working on for over a year, leading up to the now infamous confrontation with Mel in Costa Rica.

This comic book was written and illustrated by a Mr. Stephen Missick.  Mr. Missick is currently working as producer and screenwriter on an upcoming feature film titled “The Acts of the Apostle Thaddeus” starring none other than Lorenzo Lamas!
