Long-time CBM User Launches Graphic Novel Project On Kickstarter

Our very own Capwriter is going for a life-long aspiration to make his own comic book, CruZader - Agent of the Vatican , and now he's looking for a little help from his friends. The amazing artwork is completed and now he's turning to Kickstarter to raise funds for printing and distribution.

Greetings, my fellow CBM users and readers.

I am humbled that you would click through to read about my original graphic novel project: CruZader - Agent of the Vatican. It is now on Kicksarter as a means of helping me with the cost of printing and distribution. Up to this point, I have spent the last 5 years footing the bill for all production work with my freelancers. Here is the link to the site:

Capwriter's Kickstarter graphic novel site

Here are some of the highlights from the Kickstarter submission and some sample pages:

Logline: A reluctant priest is re-trained as a holy warrior for the Pope; he must embrace his destiny in order to defend the Vatican from an invading army of Muslim terrorists … who are much more than what they appear.

Synopsis: Antonio is the latest in an unbroken chain of De La Cruz family men to don the mantle of The CruZader, invisible hand of the Pope. Wielding an arsenal of precious relics, including the Spear of Christ, the Holy Grail, and the Rights of Exorcism, Antonio struggles with his archaic and often violent vocation. What he really craves is the freedom to choose his own path – a choice taken away by his very namesake.

Each CruZader is orphaned at birth, trained as a priest, then defrocked and forced to procreate until he sires a baby boy. Antonio knows he will never be allowed to raise and love this boy – a ward of the Vatican, the boy is quietly groomed to take his place.

Self-publishing is a really hard thing to pull off when you are going up against juggernauts like Disney and Warner Brothers, but I am going for it full bore. Dark Horse Comics started in a garage, and they really led the way for the many indie titles that are in the marketplace today. The CruZader is nearly complete and I am now planning ahead to my marketing launch.

The idea for The CruZader comic book came to me in 2007, and by 2008, I had evolved that idea into a printed 22-page issue #1 that I sold at WonderCon in San Francisco. I didn't want to stop there. I won a contest hosted by The CW TV Network (see videos below), and also placed in the Top 25 in an international contest hosted by Platinum Studios. Those contests gave me an indication that I was on to something and it fueled my ambition to expand The CruZader into a full-blown graphic novel.

Thanks for your consideration and backing as I chase the dream, true believers!

I hired legitimate artists: one guy for pencils/inks, another guy for colors, another guy for letters, and yet another guy for logos and title graphics. I'll probably have to hire someone else to put it all together and paginate it and get ready in printer spread format. It is a ton of work and take a lot of time.

For the most part, I think these guys are all using Photoshop in some way, shape or form.

Hope that helps.

Seems pretty interesting, at least more interesting than all the other half-ass written crap today.

But seriously, I commend you for dedicating such an amount of time for one goal. Your hard work will pay off in the future, my friend. You'll do good in the comic biz.

Werd up, Marauder. Even if it remains just a side hobby, I'll be happy to have made a contribution to the world of comics and fandom.

Looks cool, glad to see another CBM success story. I write too, but none of the artists I've asked are even vaguely interested in so much as doing samples.

Still, I got a friend making a Deadpool webseries, in which I'll be portraying Weasel (and Deadpool's psychopathic side). And a friend who wants me to do voicework for his animated webseries.

The future's still bright.

Once again, congrats. I hope you get to the top man. Thumbs up!

Agreed the KKK are pretty evil, but I'm pretty worried about your portrayal of Islam. How do you intend to avoid the stereotypes that all Muslims are America-hating, freedom-hating, evil people? Islamophobia is a real problem in this day and age, and I worry if this project is successful you might be contributing to it.

@JusticePourTous, hahah! When the vast majority of practicing Muslims on a daily basis denounce the terroristic and inhumane deeds of the extremist sects of their religion, then you can say there is an Islamophobia (not sure that is even a word) issue.

All that aside, the comic looks pretty cool. Good luck!

Man you'r living my dream, all the luck to you CapWriter. You ever thought of using www.Createspace.com, it's a self publishing site. Or check out Comixology submit program, I down load a few indie comics on my iPad from that app.

As for the concerns about the Muslim terrorist angle, all I can say without giving too much away is that the particular group of terrorists isn't really in control of their actions - they are being manipulated by an external evil that uses the convenient cover of stereotypical terrorists to attach the church.

If I ever get to do a sequel, my plan is for other puppet groups to also be infiltrated and manipulated ... perhaps Scientology, or a Polygamy cult. Not every body gets to fight clear cut bad guys like good ol' Cap vs. Nazis!

Good Luck with your project. I'm an indie author, my co-author and I are on our way to publishing our third novel with a fourth in the works and a screenplay we're actually working on right now. I know you're doing the Kickstarter thing, but we've found that Amazon publishing has a lot of good opportunities for indies. I think they may even have an option for graphic novels. If you think you may want to someday go the movie route, they even have Amazon Studios, where they have a deal going on with Warner Brothers. No I'm not one of those annoying trolls who posts ads in message board. I'm an artist myself and like to spread the word to other artists.

OK Brass tax time. All these "It's great" is fine and dandy, but you're here to solicit funds for a project.

Your work (not sure on what you are doing exactly for it though - Writer, artist, inks??) looks and reads well, but as a possible kickstartee do I get anything in return? 9.9 CGC graded issue of #1?

As someone who has had to take multiple loans to accomplish things, I appreciate the sacrifice of doing something that you're passionate about, but with more knowledge of the funding allocation and the benefit to the donor, I think that you'd find greater support.

@CapWriter

Phew! You had me worried there. I was afraid about what kind of message this comic would portray and as always religion is a tricky subject to tackle. But I'm glad to hear it's not as controversial as it sounds.
